MYTHS AND LEGENDS
There are a number of common misconceptions which clubs, players and officials often hold regarding rules, procedures and what is and isn’t the remit of the Davis Wood hockey league.
In this document a few of those myths and legends are cleared up!

  1. A 15 minute rule or is it 10? There is no such rule.

Some clubs think that if the opposition is not ready to play within 10 or 15 minutes of the start time then they have to concede. Rule 9.6(a) says play the game, or as much of it as you can, and report the facts to the area secretary afterwards.

  1. There is no doubling up rule.

Such a rule was removed from the league rules over three years ago. If teams are experiencing a shortage of players they can not, with or without the opposition or umpire agreement, double up a player…even a goalkeeper. Such dispensation can only be given by the area secretary in advance of the fixture

  1. The league does not appoint, administer or in any way monitor umpire performance.

These are duties solely undertaken by South Wales Umpires Association, County Umpire Associations and the West Umpires Association. Any query, complaint, compliment should therefore be directed to your relevant body not the Davies Wood Hockey League.

  1. If an umpire association can not appoint to a fixture the fixture must still go ahead. No person, organisation or committee other than the relevant league area secretary can authorise postponement of a fixture.

Where an umpire association cannot appoint to a fixture league rule 8 should be followed.

  1. With the advent of the new league website it is not satisfactory merely to put start times, locations of fixtures etc on the website. Positive direct contact must still be made with opposition and umpires.

Please see rule 5 for more information.

  1. The umpire said we could claim the game.

Just as the League does not become involved in disputes over the rules of hockey, umpires cannot make decisions relating to League rules or threaten penalties. This is down to the area secretary and the RSC. All the umpire can do is to make the area secretary aware of a problem.

  1. We can't play/carry on; we've only 7 players

There is nothing in the rules of hockey or League rules that stipulates the minimum number of players on the pitch.
