Messier Object Reporting Form

To earn the Memphis Astronomical Society’s Messier Observing Award you must observe at least 80 of the Messier objects. Your observations, equipment, and the observing conditions must be described as indicated on the following pages. The purpose of observing these objects is more than just to see them. It is to learn to find celestial objects easily and quickly. For this reason, star-hopping is the best method. The use of setting circles is less preferred, but is acceptable because their use requires accurate polar alignment of the telescope and knowledge of the celestial coordinate system. Use of a “Go-to” or other computerized aiming device is not acceptable, because you will learn nothing from its use. When you have observed and documented your observations of at least 80 Messier objects, turn in this booklet to any member of the MAS Board of Directors, who will give it to the Awards Committee for inspection and verification. Upon the Committee’s acceptance, you will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement. Your notes will be returned to you.
