MCA-KC & SMACNA JOINT SAFETY MEETING MINUTES

Mr. Greg Sweeney (P1 Group) opened the meeting at 8:00 a.m. with the following attendees present: Don Campbell (P1 Group), Ken Grist (SMACNA), Jim Pickel (Cates Sheet Metal), Chuck Paulson (MMC Contractors), Randall Walton (Rand Construction), and Steve Janasz (MCA-KC).
The Minutes from the June 30, 2011 Contractor Safety Meeting were reviewed and approved.
Mr. Janasz opened the discussion regarding the logistics of offering the two half-day safety education training sessions that were proposed by the group: 1) Supervisor Accountability Safety Training, and 2) Contractor Safety Seminar. Discussion included the following for each:

Journeymen, Foremen, and Superintendents of MCA-KC, SMACNA-KC, and NECA-KC

Mark Banden, OSHA Compliance Officer – “Supervisor Accountability”

Mr. Janasz indicated that he had confirmed Mark Banden’s availability for September 22.

The group agreed that for this audience there needs to be a tangible take-away (i.e., CEU credits) and recommended adding a one-hour Fall Protection session to the morning’s program delivered by Mark Damon.

The group also suggested seeing if the Greater KC Building Trades would be interested in participating in this session.

Mr. Sweeney has confirmed MVP’s participation as a presenter for the Workers Compensation portion of the program.

The group suggested inviting Richard Jones from Turner Construction to deliver the presentation on “What Every General Contractor Expects from a Subcontractor”.

The group also suggested seeing if the Greater KC Building Trades would be interested in participating in this session as well.
The action items from the meeting are as follows:

Mr. Janasz will document the meeting minutes and distribute them to the Committee and other attendees present at the meeting.

Mr. Janasz will contact Mark Damon to check his availability on September 22 to deliver his session on “Fall Protection”.

Mr. Janasz will contact both NECA and KCBT to solicit their interest in participating in these sessions.

Mr. Sweeney will contact Richard Jones at Turner Construction to check his availability for participating at the contractor training session on November 2.

Mr. Grist will speak with Mark Banden regarding reducing his “Accountability” session to allow time for the one-hour “Fall Protection” session to be delivered by Mark Damon.

Mr. Janasz will distribute a reminder for the Committee’s next meeting, which is scheduled for Friday, September 2 at 8:00 a.m. at the MCA-KC office.
There being no further business, Mr. Sweeney adjourned the meeting at 9:00 a.m.
