C. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) is a famous Italian educationalist whose method of teaching has influenced people all over the world. Born in the province of Ancona, Italy in 1870, Montessori became the first female doctor in her country after she graduated from medical school in 1896. Children learn from handling everyday materials and they develop at their own pace. The Montessori philosophy is simple. Children are unique individuals who must be free to learn without being criticized or restricted. Introduction

  • Montessori (Maria Montessori’s Education Method – Intermediate Level ESL Reading Skills Class)

  • 80 minutes

  • Standards of Learning according to Common European Framework – CEF

  • I can read articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints.

  • I can write an essay or report, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.

Cognitive Objectives

  • Students will be able to decide which words and sentences of the given intermediate level reading text are missing & answer comprehension questions.

  • Students will be able to arrange the paragraphs in order in groups of 3 then compare and check with the other groups.

  • Students will be able to organize their thoughts by writing a reflective paragraph on previously focused education method.

Materials/Technology and Advanced Preparation

Teaching and Learning Sequence

  • Introduction/Anticipatory Set – Students watch a video on Montessori and ask the 3 questions in their given mini surveys to 2 friends of them. The questions are related to both to the video and their own thoughts.



  • Students work in groups of 3 each with a different part of the whole text.

  • Students find the missing word and sentence in their texts. Group discuss the possibilities. There is 1 extra in the options. Then they check as a whole class guided by teacher.

  • Students name 3 key elements of the method according to the text in their hands.

  • Students put the text in correct order as a group, check as whole class.

  • Students fill in the graphic designer they are given. (on Prezi, they have a blank version to keep them engaged with the class.) (It is a preparation for future writing exercise, could be thought as their plan and 1st draft.)

  • Closure – Students read and comment each other’s reflective paragraphs in their groups. The final work is published on the noticeboard.
