HELP! Every St. Patrick’s Day, Loudoun County Elementary Schools are overrun with naughty, trick-playing leprechauns. This year we need the brilliant minds of the third grade students to create leprechaun traps. We will need the completed traps to be brought to school by Friday, March 14th, 2014 (just in time for St. Patrick’s!). We realize the children are busy, which is why we are giving them almost one month to complete this fun project.
In order to have the most successful catch, the trap will need to be constructed with these requirements in mind:
-
Must be a compound machine (2 or more simple machines--screw, lever, wedge, inclined plane, wheel & axle, pulley--as part of the trap construction).
-
Construction materials should be items found around the house, such as shoe boxes, toilet paper tubes, string, scrap wood, cardboard, etc.
-
Trap must be created and crafted by a third grader (minimal adult help is allowed)
-
Included in the trap must be a way to lure the leprechaun to it, for example, signs or shiny objects.
-
Trap must be completed at home—we will not be working on them at school.
-
The student must be prepared to orally present the parts of their trap to the class (see the attached oral presentation rubric).
-
Have Fun and Be Creative!
Students will also need to write 1 paragraph on how the trap works. The paragraph should start with a topic sentence and should contain supporting details.

We have read and understand the above directions and know that the leprechaun trap is due on March 14th, 2014.
