LARNAKA RECEIVES A MAKE OVER

7 nights at the 4*Palm Beach Hotel & Bungalows from £525 in June, including flights

THE Larnaka region in Cyprus is well-known for its 10,000 years of history, pretty traditional villages, excellent Blue Flag beaches and its vibrant, cosmopolitan town.

The area is now currently undergoing a five year make over that started with the new international airport and the creation of three town squares, and continues with developments such as a new golf course, development of the marina and port and excavations of the ancient port of Kition.

The developments are taking place up until 2015, with the following projects of interest to holidaymakers and giving another reason to holiday in this beautiful part of Cyprus:

  • In the Footsteps of Zenon – Larnaka Cultural Walk (completed 2011)

  • Olympic Standard Shooting Range (2011)

  • Excavations of the ancient port of Kition (2013)

  • 5.5km walkway joining the villages of Pyla and Voroklini (2013)

  • Environment centre at the Salt Lake (2013)

  • Larnaka Golf Resort & Country Club (2014)

  • Redevelopment of the marina (2015 Phase A)

Larnaka Cultural Walk

Three new signed walks have been developed that will take in the town’s various attractions, named after the great philosopher Zenon who lived in Kition (ancient Larnaka). The first walk covers the seafront and town centre, the second walk is dedicated to the town’s archaeology and museums and the third walk combines cultural aspects with sites of natural beauty.

Olympic Standard Shooting Range

Holidaymakers that enjoy shooting will be able to have a go at the new Olympic standard shooting range being created in the village of Klavdia. It will boast four combined Olympic trap-sheet-double traps, one separate skeet, one spate trapdouble trap layout and 10-12 layouts for sporting and kompak shooting. It will host events plus be used as a major European training centre for shotgun shooting.

Excavations of the ancient port of Kition

This port is one of the world’s major surviving ancient ports, but a major part of the archaeological site is currently obstructed by the Larnaka Tennis Association’s tennis courts. These will be relocated and the site will become an archaeological park along with an Archaeological Museum, showing off the many ancient artefacts that have been unearthed.

Walkway linking Pyla and Voroklini

These pretty villages will be linked with a 5.5 km seafront walkway for walkers to enjoy a scenic stroll along the coast. The first part will be finished by 2012 expanding the current walkway of Voroklini, which is right at the front of the Palm Bach Hotel & Bungalows and the rest completed by 2013.

Environmental centre at Salt Lake

This area is very popular with nature lovers, particularly because of its migrating flamingos that make the lake their home between November and March. The new information centre will provide information on the different types of flora and fauna that live in the salt marshes and wetlands.

Larnaka Golf Resort & Country Club

A new international, 18-hole par 71 golf course will be built by 2014 in the village of Tersefanou, designed by leading golf course architects ‘European Golf Design’, giving golfers even more choice of world-class golf courses to play on in Cyprus.

Re-development of the Larnaka Port & Marina

This port will become the main passenger terminal in Cyprus and the marina expanded to accommodate 900 berths.
