LANDGUARD BIRD OBSERVATORY DECEMBER 2001.




It should be noted that all records of county rarities and BBRC,s await consideration by the relevant record committees.




RED-THROATED DIVER Gavia stellata


December

Movements recorded on five dates from the 12th with accumulated totals being seven north and four south. Max count was of five north on the 12th with two north on the 15th and two south on the 30th being the next highest counts.


GREAT CRESTED GREBE Podiceps cristatus

December

One south on the 30th was the only record.


GREAT CORMORANT Phalacrocorax carbo

December

Movements noted were, five south on the 15th and seven north and one south on the 30th. Recorded offshore on four dates from the 4th to 23rd with five bird days. Max two on the 12th.


EUROPEAN SHAG Phalacrocorax aristotelis

December

Singles present offshore on the 2nd and 24th.


(DARK-BELLIED) BRENT GOOSE Branta bernicla bernicla

December

Movements noted on five dates with accumulated totals being 10 north and 11 south. Max was of seven north and seven south ( !?) on the 12th.


COMMON SHELDUCK Tadorna tadorna

December

Movements noted on three dates from the 15th with accumulated totals being one north and five south. Max was three south on the 30th. In addition one was found dead on the 18th.


COMMON TEAL Anas crecca

December

One south on the 23rd.


VELVET SCOTER Melanitta fusca

December

Two north on the 15th.


EURASIAN SPARROWHAWK Accipiter nisus

December

Singles were recorded as present on the 15th, 16th and 30th.


COMMON KESTREL Falco tinnunculus

December

Singles present on the 4th, 15th, 16th and 23rd..


RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE Alectoris rufa

December

Present throughout. Max count of six on the 23rd.


EURASIAN OYSTERCATCHER Haematopus ostralegus

December

One south on the 24th was the only record.


RINGED PLOVER Charadrius hiaticula

December

High tide roost counts were c20 on the 2nd, c160 on the 12th and four on the 28th.


EUROPEAN GOLDEN PLOVER Pluvialis apricatia

December

One south on the 23rd.


NORTHERN LAPWING Vanellus vanellus

December

One south on the 9th.


RED KNOT Calidris canutus

December

18 south on the 30th.


SANDERLING Calidris alba

December

One present on the 12th.


DUNLIN Calidris alpina

December

Four south on the 30th.


COMMON SNIPE Gallinago gallinago

December

One south on the 29th.


EURASIAN WOODCOCK Scolopax rusticola

December

One present on the 24th.


RUDDY TURNSTONE Arenaria interpres

Recorded as present on 10 dates with 38 bird days. Max was eight on the 1st and 11th with five on the 23rd being the next highest count.


MEDITERRANEAN GULL Larus melanocephalus

December

Recorded as present on 10 dates with 23 bird days. Six individuals were identified during the month with four adults and single second and first winters present. Max was five on the 15 when four adults and a second winter were present with the next highest counts being three on the 8th (two adults and a first winter) and 12th (three adults).


BLACK-HEADED GULL Larus ridibundus

December

Present throughout. Max count of c160 on the 23rd.


MEW (COMMON) GULL Larus canus

December

Present throughout. Max of c560 on the 23rd with c500 on both the 16th and 28th.


LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL Larus fuscus

December

Recorded from the 16th on four dates with 13 bird days. Max six on the 23rd with five (all adults) on the 24th.


HERRING GULL Larus argentatus

December

Present throughout. Max count was of c130 on the 23rd.


GREAT BLACK=BACKED GULL Larus marinus

December

Present throughout. Max count was of 46 on the 23rd.


BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE Rissa tridactyla

Present throughout. Max of c125 on the 30th with the next highest count being c50 on the 16th and 28th with c40 on the 2nd, 23rd and 24th.


COMMON GUILLEMOT Uria aalge

December

Singles present offshore on the 12th, 14th, 18th (oiled) and 24th. In addition on was found dead on the 16th.


STOCK (DOVE) PIGEON Columba oenas

December

One present on the 23rd was the only record.


COMMON WOOD PIGEON Columba palumbus

December

Present throughout. Max was c30 on both the 1st and 4th with c25 present on the 8th, 11th and 12th. Numbers by the end of the year had decreased to 12 by the 23rd.


EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE Streptopelia decaocta

December

Present throughout. Mac of 14 on both the 11th and 12th with numbers decreasing to four by the 23rd.


LITTLE OWL Athene noctua

December

Present throughout.


SHORT-EARED OWL Asio flammeus

December

One found long dead on the 29th.


SKYLARK Alauda arvensis

December

Movements noted were of singles south on both the 2nd and 6th. Singles were present on the 8th and 23rd.


MEADOW PIPIT Anthus pratensis

December

Recorded as present on six dates with 11 bird days. Max of four on the 8th with three on the 6th, The last bird of the year was a single on the 20th.


PIED WAGTAIL Motacilla alba

December

Singles present on four dates up to the 12th.


WINTER WREN Troglodytes troglodytes

December

Present throughout. Max of 10 on the 20th with eight on the 14th being the next highest count.


HEDGE ACCENTOR (DUNNOCK) Prunella modularis

December

Present throughout. Max of c30 on the 6th with c25 on the 20th. The last count for the year was of four on the 23rd though this is probably not a true reflection on the population.


EUROPEAN ROBIN Erithacus rubecula

December

The population was estimated to have being c10 birds for most of the month, The last count on the 23rd however revealed just four birds.


COMMON BLACKBIRD Turdus merula

December

Present throughout. Max of c25 on both the 1st and 8th with c15 on the 24th being the last count of the year.


FIELDFARE Turdus pilaris

December

One present on the 24th.



SONG THRUSH Turdus philomelos

December

Present throughout. Max of two on the 6th, 11th, 14th and 24th. The last record for the year was of a single on the 29th,


MISTLE THRUSH Turdus viscivorus

December

Singles were present on the 3rd and 23rd.


COMMON CHIFFCHAFF Phylloscopus collybita

December

One on the 20th was deemed to be a P.c.tristis type with this bird also present on the 23rd along with a nominate type.


GOLDCREST Regulus regulus

December

Recorded on 12 dates with 19 bird days with the max count being three on the 1st with two on a further five dates up to the 20th. The last bird for the year was seen on the 30th.


FIRECREST Regulus ignicapillus

December

One present on the 1st was the last for the year.


BLUE TIT Parus caeruleus

December

Two present throughout.


GREAT TIT Parus major

December

Two present throughout.


MAGPIE Pica pica

December

Recorded on eight dates up to the 29th with 16 bird days. Max count of three on both the 6th and 8th.


CARRION CROW Corvus corone

December

Present throughout. Max of eight on the 12th with seven on the 8th and 11th.


COMMON STARLING Sturnus vulgaris

December

Present throughout. Max of 40 on the 12th with c30 on the 1st, 6th, 8th and 30th.


HOUSE SPARROW Passer domestics

December

Present throughout. The only count was of 22+ on the 23rd.


CHAFFINCH Fringilla coelebs

December

Present throughout. Max of two on the 2nd with all other records referring to a single.


EUROPEAN GREENFINCH Carduelis chloris

December

Present throughout. Max of 10 on the 28th with eight on both the 11th and 15th being the next highest count.


EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH Carduelis carduelis

December

Recorded as present from the 4th to the 20th on seven dates with 10 bird days. Max were three on the 9th with two on the 6th being the only other multiple counts.


COMMON LINNET Carduelis cannabina

December

One present on the 6th with six on the 23rd were the only records.


SNOW BUNTING Plectrophenax nivalis

December

Birds present were six on the 8th and 25 on the 24th.
