INTERNATIONAL YOUNG ARCHITECTS’ IDEAS

AWARDS and EXHIBITION

Individual Freedom Spaces in Public”

Article 1: The Aim and Extent

The modern towns have been witnessing a process of fast change and transformation in the face of global policies. There is the intense pressure from the mechanism of commodification in parallel with neo-liberal policies in harmony with the intermingled integrity not only in the areas of architecture or planning but also in all areas of life. We have been witnessing the transformation of architecture, design, space and even towns into marketing commodities. The processes that are shaped and imposed according to the demands of the capital are quite ominous and challenging in terms of life quality and communal relations in future. Are the towns open for development in the light of scientific mind and research with participative and democratic methods that are required by 21st century? Or, are we desperate in the face of transformation of the urban spaces, public spaces, art and culture as well as the heritage of towns as the projection of excessively liberalized policies on global scale into marketing tools? What is imposed is not only the projects or spatial arrangements, but also the consumption-oriented lifestyles, mechanism and a state of losing continously.

The verb "imposing" refers to a power as the subject, to an idea/subject/project that is an object of this act and to a second subject-object that is the passive side of such act. In other words, "imposed" refers to a couple of subject and a couple of object at the same time with the three poles located inside the asymmetrical power relations.

The objective of the theme of “ideas awards and exhibiton" is to research the criticisms to be brought against the "imposed" processes as well as the creative approaches and ideas to be developed against the states of "imposing / being imposed". The connotation of this concept will open the gates of defending the values and qualities that are destroyed by multi-dimensional policies which are imposed together with the defense of self and authenticity while revealing the mechanisms of imposing and discovery and invention of possible methods of resistance. Considering the relationship between social existence and space, the discussions on spatial expansion of the states of "imposing / being imposed" will offer clues on the possibilities of new thinking, conception and representation in architecture, urban design and planning.
