BACKGROUND
The large majority of the current fleet of nuclear power plants are water-cooled reactors. Their efficient and safe operation is a key factor in assuring that nuclear power will meet both the current and the future energy needs. Refurbishment and life extension, as well as power up-rating of existing plants will be a major activity. Also, for the next decades for many industrialized as well as developing countries, new water-cooled reactors will be the major route to new nuclear power capacity to meet growing demands and to replace old electricity generating stations.
