Welcome to the new season. As usual the summer months have flown by far too quickly and Christmas can't be too far away! Hopefully your batteries have been re-charged for all the badminton ahead and you are excited by the thought of all the matches and tournaments coming up in the next few months.
As usual, the main part of this edition gives County results since the March edition, a précis of the AGM held at the end of June (a disappointing number of Clubs attending), where final league and tournament positions for Junior, Senior and Veterans can all be found. Going forward, the "Veterans" events are now to be known as "Masters" events falling in line with worldwide badminton and perhaps this will encourage more players turning 40 to sign up for these events, after all, Masters does sound more professional and less ageist for those of you that are of a more sensitive nature.
On Page 28 there is a photo of our relatively new Hampshire & IOW Regional Officer and you will see his very comprehensive report amongst the AGM items, showing what is happening in the area he covers (with IOW bits taken out). He certainly has been very busy since taking on this post and I hope you will all give him your support as appropriate. Following this we have a report of the Singles Tournament 27th August and what's to come in the 2011/12 season.
There have been many success stories with our 60's, 65's & 70's teams all winning their respective Inter County Champions matches and becoming National champions and the 65's & 70's teams winning their Inter County Leagues with the 65's going on to win the National finals.
Congratulations to Topflight Badminton Club for winning senior team of the year at the Sports Hampshire & IOW Awards and Roberts Mays School for coming 2nd in the National finals KS3 Girls category of the Centre Parcs National Schools Challenge, having won the South East Regional tournament.
Sarah Burgess, see picture with Kelly on front cover, achieved her 100th Cap for Hampshire during the 1st team week-end in April, so many congratulations to her for her commitment to Hampshire badminton. I hope she has no plans to retire! Individual awards also going to Tom Kent and Vikki Williams - well done.
Senior League matches have all been arranged for the coming season and I hope as many of you as possible will support the 2nd & 3rd teams who play their home matches at The Westgate Centre - see Page 26 for dates. The 1st team play 3 weekends of matches with 2 of these being played this season at the National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes and 1 in Surrey. No long trek up to Yorkshire or beyond for them this year which I'm sure they will appreciate. Hopefully some of you will also be able to travel and support this team.
With the 2012 Olympics fast approaching our National players will be doing their utmost to impress the selectors but will Chris Adcock & Imogen Bankier be able to sustain their success in reaching the finals of the World Championships this August? With China winning all disciplines, it's going to be very difficult to achieve a high level of success at the Olympics. It will be very tough but something for all us spectators to look forward to. How many of you have been lucky enough to obtain tickets?
Wishing you all a good season of badminton. EDITOR

1st Team I.C.C.Weekend at YORK - 9th & 10th April, 2011

Report by Trevor Shanks, Team Manager
After the 250 mile journey to York on the Friday night the team faced Surrey 2nds in the first match on the Saturday morning. We had a couple of changes in the team from that of the previous 1st team weekend. Josie, Kelly and Ben Tier were not available and on the Friday Dan Corby was a late cry-off. Anna Showan and Vikki Williams replaced the two girls whilst James Todd was a very late call up to replace Dan. All three played well and were very valuable members of the team.
At 1st singles Jack Molyneux proved too strong for Ben Muir winning a close first game 23/21 and taking the second 21/17. Adam Richenbach lost his first game 21/14 to Aaron Cheng, but narrowly won the next two 22/20, 24/22 to gain our first point. Jo Dix easily disposed of her opponent, Ellie Crossley 21/8, 21/4 whilst Anna Showan also had a relatively easy victory over Claire Royall 21/1, 21/14. Matt Corby and Chris Evans took little time in overcoming Max Gardner/Aaron Cheng 21/6, 21/19. The new pairing of James Todd/Adam Richenbach took some time to settle and eventually lost 21/18, 24/22 to Jack Molyneux/Michael Cooper. Both Ladies’ doubles were successful. Jo and Sarah Burgess won the first game against Nicola Doble/Claire Royall 21/17, lost the second with the same score and took the final game 21/13 while Jenny Crump partnered by young Vikki Williams had an easy victory against Ellie Crossley/Kate Cooper 21/9, 21/9. The Mixed Doubles were shared with both going to 3 games. Matt and Sarah beat Michael Cooper/Karen Beckman 21/14, 14/21, 21/17 but Chris and Jenny lost 22/20, 6/21, 23/21 to Max Gardner/Nicola Doble to leave the final score 7/3 in our favour.
We had started the weekend in 6th position but this win moved us up to 4th still 9 points behind leaders Avon, who had beaten Worcestershire 6/4 and had 47 points. Cheshire were still 2nd on 44 points having beaten 3rd placed Leinster 7/3.
Our afternoon match was against Worcestershire who were, at this stage 9th, and in danger of relegation. We didn’t get off to a good start. Both the Men’s singles went to the opposition. Richard Wrigley beat Ben 21/13, 21/16 while Ben Witham was a 21/16, 21/23, 21/8 winner over Adam. Jo and Anna soon brought us level. Jo beat Tracey Baker 21/10, 21/7 and Anna was a 21/6, 21/13 victor against Heather Crump. Matt and Chris lost the 1st Men's against Ivor Griffiths/James Lauder 21/17, 21/14 but James and Adam got their act together to overcome Richard Wrigley/Ben Witham 21/18, 21/16. Both Ladies' Doubles came to us. Jo and Sarah beat Tracey Baker/Debbie Beeston-Smith 12/21, 21/16, 21/16 at 1st ladies. Vikki and our Miss Crump (Jenny) beat Lorraine Cole/Abigail Fullerton 21/14, 21/19 so that we now had a 5/3 lead. Unfortunately both Mixed Doubles went to Worcestershire. James Lauder/Lorraine Cole beat Matt/Sarah 19/21, 21/20, 21/19 and Ivor Griffiths/Debbie Beeston-Smith beat Chris/Jenny 21/7, 23/21.
This left the score 5/5 with Hampshire still in 4th place 11 points behind leaders Avon, 6 points behind second placed Cheshire and 1 below Yorkshire 2nd team.
The last match of the season was against lowly Kent who already had no chance of avoiding relegation. In the end we won 9/1 with Adam the only loser. He lost 21/12, 21/19 to Ryan Staden. Ben had already beaten Dan Groom 21/13, 21/13 to make it 1/1. Then Anna accounted for Carla Staden with a 21/10, 21/16 victory and Vikki, promoted to 2nd singles place, convincingly beat Paige Butler 21/9, 21/17. It took Matt and Chris 3 games, 21/19, 14/21, 21/15 before defeating Ryan Staden/Ben Parr at 1st Men’s doubles. Then Adam and James overcame Phil Troke (they get everywhere!)/Shaun Parr with a 21/12, 21/17 scoreline. Similarly our 1st Ladies' pair, Jo and Sarah took 3 games when beating Kim Steer/Emma Smethurst 13/21, 21/14, 21/13. Jenny and Vikki, meanwhile got the better of Carla Staden/Paige Butler 24/22, 21/19 to give us a 7/1 lead going into the two Mixed doubles. Both our pairs had little difficulty in winning. Matt/Sarah beat Phil Troke/Gill Hall 21/14, 21/19 while Chris/Jo beat Shaun Parr/Kim Steer 21/15, 21/14 to complete the 9/1 victory.
A very good weekend. We finished equal with Yorkshire 2nd team on 52 points but on countback of games won and lost we ended up in 3rd spot. Avon, did not have a good series of three matches and finally just made top spot, 1 point ahead of Cheshire, with 56 points.
The new members of the team, Anna, Vikki and James, blended with the team, played well and certainly give us hope for the future.
We were well supported, as usual, by our Chairman Diana and her husband Graham. Two of the non-playing selectors, Mark Peckham and Neil Potter, were also in attendance. The Chairman had a very successful Saturday afternoon organising a sweepstake among the team on the Grand National, which she herself then curiously won!
Here’s to next season!
I.C.C. REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
HAMPSHIRE 2 V SURREY 3

Played at The Westgate Centre, 13th March 2011
This was the last 2nd team match of the 2010/2011 season and trying to gain promotion it was important that the home team had a good points win over their Surrey opponents. This was going to be a difficult task as they had lost 5 - 10 away at Wimbledon in February.

James Todd/Kate Lutman lost to Evans/King 21/8 26/28 17/21

HAMPSHIRE 2 WON 8 - 7
This was an excellent result for the team with 10 of the 15 matches going to 3 ends, with Hampshire winning 5 of them. Of the 5 lost there were some very close scores and the results could have gone either way. In particular, Anna took the first set of her singles match 29/27, narrowly lost the 2nd to 18 and couldn't quite keep in touch to lose the match 14 in the third. James & Kate also lost a close encounter against their Mixed opposition, having won the first set 21/8, narrowly lost the second set by 26/28 and finally succumbed in the third to 17. This was an excellent all round team effort but not quite getting enough points to gain promotion despite winning more matches than Wiltshire in 1st place. EDITOR

HAMPSHIRE 3 WON 8 - 7
Another good result with four matches going to 3 ends with Hampshire winning three of them. Nick and Kevin were unlucky not to win the fourth 3 ender having taken the first set 24/22, losing the 2nd to 15 and the 3rd to 19. Altogether another good all round effort by this team, taking 2nd place behind the winners Berkshire 2. Berkshire 2 had won all 8 of their matches, twice as many as their nearest rivals Hampshire 3 & Devon 2. EDITOR
HAMPSHIRE INTER-DISTRICT KNOCK OUT COMPETITION
Played on 17th April 2011 at the Westgate Centre.
A very strong Portsmouth team comprising of Laura Baker, Charmaine Webb, Laura Woodward, Martyn Arnold, Adrian McCarthy and Rowan Taylor took this year's title. Meeting Basingstoke in the first round they took the match 365 to 272 points. They then went on to beat Aldershot & Camberley, who had had a bye through to the 2nd round, by 345 points to 298.
Meanwhile Southampton, also with a very strong team, proved too strong for the Winchester team and overwhelmed them by 377 points to 276. This set them up against the Portsmouth team. Portsmouth took 4 games outright, losing just one and halving 4 to win the trophy by 355 points to 288,
Basingstoke retained the Plate event beating Winchester. Basingstoke took 4 of the 9 games, the remainder being shared, to finish with 345 points to Winchester's 290.
Aldershot & Camberley's team consisted of Claire Stott, Nicky Mitchell, Emma Norman, Gareth Davies, Andy Flett and Paul Nicholls.

U15 Team Challenge Final 2011
The team Challenge Finals is the first of the season's finals, played in March at Hatfield.
The day began with the first match against Derbyshire and this proved to be close with Hants winning 2 of the 3 mixed, the boys' singles and the boys' doubles, giving us a 4-3 win which set us on the road. Our next opponents were Lancashire and again we won all events apart from a boys' doubles, which we narrowly lost 21-20. (6-1 Hants).

Avon next and again the team played well to win the match 6-1 only losing the girls’ singles to an England player. The 4th match was against Warwickshire and we only won 1 of the 3 mixed with Jason & Libby playing well - this was a slight shock but we battled on. Jason won his singles and we won both boys' and girls' doubles to give us a 4-3 win with Melissa & Lisa playing very well in the girls' doubles.

Hertfordshire were our next opponents and although we only won the boys’ singles with Kelvin and the girls’ doubles with Melissa & Libby all the other games were 21- 17 or 21-18, so it was closer than the result suggests. We went down 6-1. We carried this result through to the next stage where we were playing for 2-4 positions.

Our next match was against Yorkshire and Kelvin won the singles and Sikun & Jason just lost 20-21 in the doubles and Sikun & Libby 18-21 in the mixed but the match result was 1-6 to Yorkshire.

We were now playing for the 3rd or 4th place against Ulster, who always have a strong fighting spirit. After the mixed we were 1-2 with Sikun & Lisa playing hard for a 21-20 win, Kelvin winning his singles and Sikun & Jason the boys’ doubles but in the other games Ulster proved too strong for us and we lost 3-4.This gave the team 4th place which was a good result at the end of a long day. Well done team.

Kelvin Latimer, Sikun Chen, Jason Wong, Rudy Beavis

Melissa Stride , Tanya Pinto, Libby McMorrow, Lisa Pearson
The future of Hampshire's badminton looks good when we can achieve excellent results like this.

Report by Shirley & Alan Baker
U15 Shires League Finals 2011
We have been successful for some time now in having teams at the Shires Finals and this year has been no exception. We took a confident team to Hatfield for a one day final event to play against the top 8 teams in England.

Back Row: Kelvin Latimer, Sean Flower, Jason Wong, Sikun Chen, Rudy Beavis

Front Row: Melissa Stride, Lisa Pearson, Libby McMorrow, Eleanor Deane
Our first match was against Surrey and we were 2-2 after the 4 mixed, but strong singles performances by both the girls and the boys took the score to 9-3. Kelvin & Jason won both boys' doubles games. Rudy & Sean played very well to beat Surreys 1st pair after losing to their 2nd pair. and Melissa & Libby won both girls' doubles to give us a 14-6 win, which was a good start as we were now playing for 1-4 position.
The draw then gave us Yorkshire to play and we found the mixed tough with only Sikun & Libby winning 2nd with the other 3 games just going down 21-19 each. The singles saw a great fight from Kelvin who beat his opponent James Farmer, and the Yorkshire supporters, 21-20, Nice one Kelvin! The girls’ singles saw both Melissa and Libby win hard fought games 21-17 and 21-19 and Lisa winning 21-12 with Eleanor just going down 21-17. Libby & Melissa won both their girls' doubles against a strong pair, but Yorkshire boys proved too tough and we lost the match 13-7.
This result meant we were playing for 3-4th place against Essex. We played good mixed to win all 4 games with good wins from new pairings of Sean & Lisa and Jason & Eleanor. The girls’ singles went 2 games each with Melissa and Libby maintaining their winning ways as did Sikun and Rudy. Kelvin & Jason won both their boys’ doubles with Rudy & Sean beating the Essex 1st pair. Melissa & Libby completed a great day by winning their doubles and therefore not losing a singles or doubles game all day.
This put Hampshire in 3rd place which was an excellent result considering this was a first time appearance at the finals for several members of the team. Well played everyone! We would like to thank the parents for their support over the season and would like to congratulate the team for the support they gave each other throughout the whole season, which helped to achieve this result.

Report by Alan & Shirley Baker
Inter-Counties Tournament 2011
The annual event of the year for the U17 County team is held at Nottingham University where we compete against 40 teams, from all over the country including Ireland, for the ICT trophy. Hampshire has been 2nd twice but never won the cup in what is considered the highlight of the County Junior's career.
This year we had a young team with 6 of the 10 players being able to return next year and we had been seeded 10th. As you can see below, we travelled lightly !

From L to R : Andrew Stride, Nick Downard, Craig Muir, Melissa Stride, Kelvin Latimer,

Hayley Duckett, Viki Williams, Fiona McGowan, Sarah Stannett, Tom Kent.
We arrived the evening before and, after depositing our luggage in our rooms, we went Bowling where some performances were not measured by the score.
This was an opportunity for the players to sample life on a Campus and Nottingham has good sports facilities. With 40 teams playing 10 matches in 4 days it is quite a show and is carried out in 3 sports venues, 1 in the campus and 2 nearby.
The team play with 2 mixed pairs, 2 boys' and 2 girls' doubles and 2 singles making 10 rubbers in all. Our first match was against Cornwall which we won 9-1 and then played back to back against Nottinghamshire. We started slowly with the 2 mixed being closely fought but just losing both in 3 ends. The team recovered and proceeded to take the next 8 games to give us an 8-2 win. We then broke for dinner. In the early evening we then played Staffordshire. This time the mixed pairs won but we found the boys’ singles and doubles more difficult. The girls did not flinch however and won all their games to give us a 6-4 win. So we went to bed knowing that we had achieved our first goal - to be able to play for the 1-20 placing.
The next day was to be tougher as we had to play 4 matches including two against 2 teams seeded above us. Our first match was against Leicestershire, and we lost the two mixed but Craig had a great battle in the second boys' singles to win after losing the first end 8-15, but taking the 2nd and 3rd in style. The boys then won all their remaining games as did the girls to give us an 8-2 win. No rest, but back to back against Devon who were seeded 8th and they had a very strong boys' team. This proved to be the case as we lost both mixed and both the boys singles with Kelvin, an U15, proving what a strong player he is by taking a game off one of the top U17 boys Alex Lane. Craig could not hold the 2nd boys’ singles and we were 0-4. Viki stepped up to the plate and took her singles and her doubles with Hayley. Melissa could not hold her singles, neither could the boys in the doubles and we came out a battered 3-7 down but not out of the battle yet. We had a one match break to grab some sunshine, fresh air and lunch before taking on Avon. We started slowly and lost the mixed but Kelvin battled hard to win the 1st singles, but Craig just lost. Again Viki and Melissa played well giving us a 3-3 score line. Tom & Nick lost their boys' doubles against a very tall powerful pair but Viki & Hayley and Sarah & Fiona played well to win, so giving us a 5-4 score line with 2nd boys doubles of Andrew & Craig to come. They battled hard to win the 1st but just lost the second and 3rd. So at 5-5 we had to add up the points which gave us the match 271 points to 252. This was a great result and we went to dinner and a break before restarting in the evening.
We had to face Warwickshire who were the number 1 seeds and had some excellent players. We narrowly lost the 1st and 2nd mixed and Kelvin met England's No.1 boy who proved too strong for our little champion, but come next year and he will be in charge. Craig took a bit of a battering from an England boy as well so we were 0-4. Our girls battled well with Viki winning her singles and Viki & Hayley wining the 1st girls' doubles and Sarah & Melissa playing very well to win the second doubles. The opposition's boys were too strong for us and we left with a 3-7 result and having to play for 9-12 positions.
We had a relaxed start the next day with only 2 matches to play, but a disco in the evening. Our first match was against Essex and we won with style 7-3 with our first 15-0 15-0 in the 1st girls' doubles for Viki & Hayley.
We then went on to play Derbyshire and again we won 7-3 with Hayley and Viki winning their singles well. Nick & Tom played a good boys' doubles to win 1st boys and Viki & Hayley and Fiona & Sarah fought hard to win the girls' doubles. This gave us one more match against Surrey on the last morning and we were playing for 9th or 10th position. As we were seeded 10th a win was doubly important that we came out winners. Before then however the team had the evening disco to enjoy.
After an evening of dancing and chatting, and some with stories to tell, the team returned to base for treats and hot chocolate. They all came out none the worse for their evening of "dancing" and gave a very good account of themselves by beating Surrey 7-3. Tom stepped up to do battle against Aaron Cheung and gave a good account of himself. (Tom had played hard for the team throughout the whole tournament). Kelvin played a great 2nd singles match against Ditler Holm which he won 17/15, 15/14. Viki and Hayley won their singles and doubles and Andrew & Nick won an exciting boys’ doubles game. Nick & Fiona won their mixed doubles with some excellent net play by Fiona to give the team a 7-3 win. This was a good result with every player winning at least one game in the last 2 days.
