(Hometown ) resident assists with one of world’s largest air shows as part of Civil Air Patrol’s National Blue Beret (DATELINE, e.g. MADISON, Wis.) – (Rank, first and last name) , (age), from (hometown) will provide assistance at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual fly-in at Oshkosh, Wis., July 19 through Aug. 2 as part of Civil Air Patrol’s National Blue Beret. For about 140 Civil Air Patrol cadets 16 and older, and selected senior members, the National Blue Beret offers the chance to work at one of the largest and most prestigious air shows in the world, which annually draws 500,000-plus people and includes more than 10,000 aircraft. “National Blue Beret is a cadet experience like no other,” said Col. Regena Aye, the activity director. “Blue Beret allows cadets to hone their emergency services skills, to take advantage of some amazing aerospace education opportunities and to improve their leadership skills.” Each participant works several areas of the air show, including the flight line and exhibits, learning techniques of aircraft marshaling and electronic direction finding. Cadets will be encouraged to take advantage of once-in-a-lifetime events that often occur during the air show, such as the opportunity to meet legendary aviators, celebrities and aviation professionals and to witness the flight of both vintage and sophisticated aircraft. The National Blue Beret is one of about 30 National Cadet Special Activities being sponsored by CAP across the nation this summer. These activities allow cadets to hone their skills in a variety of areas, including search and rescue, flight and emergency services, science, leadership fundamentals, citizenship and military courtesies and to explore aerospace technology and aviation careers. In 2009, 1,100 youth participated in CAP-sponsored summer activities. Through its cadet program, CAP builds strong citizens for the future by providing leadership training, technical education, scholarships and career education to young men and women, ages 12 to 20. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving 95 lives so far in fiscal year 2010. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counter-drug missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to the nearly 24,000 young people currently participating in CAP cadet programs.
