Ang Lee: Making Movies

Directions: You have 45 minutes in which to read the passage below and answer the questions that follow it. Only answers marked on your Scantron sheet will be graded.

1“The famous film director, producer and writer Ang Lee was born in 1954 in Taiwan. He comes from a family of scholars. His father, a school principal, escaped from China after his parents were executed for being landlords. Rather than being a man of science, Lee decided to study acting. He graduated from the National Taiwan College of Arts in 1975 and then went to the United States, where he studied directing (for theatre) at the University of Illinois and film production at New York University. In New York, he worked with other student filmmakers such as Spike Lee and made his own short movies, including Dim Lake (1983) and Fine Line (1984).

2Dim Lake and Fine Line, both prize-winning short movies, were enough for Lee to get accepted for representation by the Morris Talent Agency, but despite his hard work, five years went by. During that time, Ang Lee was a househusband, staying home and taking care of his two sons. His wife, Janice Lin, supported the family, waiting for Lee to get his big break.

3Lee’s big break finally came as a surprise. In 1990, he entered two scripts in a national competition in Taiwan. Amazingly, the scripts managed to take first and second place. Pushing Hands (1991) and The Wedding Banquet11 (1993) were later joined by Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) as a set of three loosely connected films that Lee called his “Father Knows Best” trilogy, all featuring the fatherly actor Sihung Lung.

4The father in Pushing Hands is a tai chi master who leaves his native country, China, to retire in New York. He hopes to spend his last years with his only son, who is married to a non-Chinese writer. Unfortunately, everything her father-in-law tries to do to help upsets her. Problems in communication between cultures are a source of much of the movie’s bittersweet humor. Although he has spent his whole life seeking harmony through tai chi, the father cannot seem to achieve it in his home.

5The father in the second movie, The Wedding Banquet, is a general who, along with his wife, has been pressuring their only son, Gao Wai, to marry and have children. There is just one problem. Gao does not want to get married. Finally, he finds a compromise. Wei Wei, a young artist, needs to marry an American just to get citizenship. Otherwise, she will have to leave the country. Their simple marriage of convenience, with a quiet ceremony at City Hall, becomes complicated when Gao’s parents arrive and a giant wedding banquet is arranged.

6The father in the third movie of the trilogy is a famous Taiwanese chef and a widower. Every week, he prepares a banquet for his three adult daughters. The movie opens with mouth-watering preparations for this banquet. Unfortunately, he has recently lost his sense of taste and the food tastes terrible.

7In exploring the different and changing roles of a father, the three films also look at problems between generations, each not understanding the other. Another theme is the way in which food brings people together. Perhaps it is a lesson Ang Lee learned in his five years at home when he was making meals for his wife and children.
