Session 1 (10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)

Technical Computing with MATLAB

In this seminar, we will introduce the MATLAB and Simulink environments for technical computing and system design. We will develop an algorithm and build a system to rotate a flashlight to track a green ball. This seminar will cover the following topics:



Introduction to MATLAB

Case study: Image analysis

• Accessing data (from files or hardware)

• Analyzing data and developing algorithms

Sharing work with others

12:00 p.m. - 12:30 p.m.

A light lunch will be served.

Session 2 (12:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)

Modeling and Simulation with Simulink

Case study: Object tracking system

Video processing

• Designing event-driven logic using Stateflow

• Interfacing with hardware

Case study: Modeling and controlling a DC motor

• Modeling physical systems (mechanical, electrical)

• Performing feedback control design

• Implementing a controller on a microprocessor

Speeding Up MATLAB Applications with Parallel Computing

In this session, we will demonstrate how to perform parallel and distributed computing in MATLAB to boost execution speed on computationally and data-intensive problems. We will introduce parallel processing constructs such as parallel for loops, distributed arrays, parallel numerical algorithms, and message-passing functions that let you implement task- and data-parallel algorithms in MATLAB at a high level, without programming for specific hardware and network architectures.

Highlights include:

• Applications of parallel computing

• Implicit multithreaded computations

• Interactive task- and data-parallel applications

• Interactive applications to scheduled applications

• Scaling your work up to a computer cluster
