EARLINET Network with stations in Hamburg, Leipzig und München
Lidar measurements were conducted according to the regular EARLINET schedule (Monday noon, Monday at sunset and Thursday at sunset) with further extensions. These extensions concern not only additional days, but also measurement periods that were longer than the standard EARLINET periods. Data include aerosol backscatter and extinction profiles, stored in the NetCDF format. Data and quick looks were transferred to the COPS/GOP data archive, and are also available from the central EARLINET server.
The lidar measurements of the LMU include data from two systems: one of which (POLIS) was located in downtown Munich, the other (MULIS) was stationed at Maisach (25 km west of Munich).
A quick look example of the temporal evolution of the aerosol distribution under broken cloud field (June 18, 2007; Munich) conditions is shown in Figure 1. The attenuated backscatter shows low level clouds (1.7 km) as well as cirrus clouds between 8 and 11 km. The aerosol optical depth at 355 m, derived from integration of the lidar extinction profile, was 0.22; the uncertainty is in the order of 10 %. An overview of the June measurements is given in Fig. 2. Note, that the different aspect ratios of the images result from the different duration of the measurement periods; the height is 12 m in all images.
Quicklook examples of the possible regular EARLINET measurement at Leipzig for July and August 2007 are shown in Figs. and 4. lofted aerosol layers, altocumulus and cirrus layers were often observed in the summer of 2007. On many Mondays and Thursdays, however, lidar observations were not possible.
