ABSTRACT

This research aims at determining the relationship between bioaccumulation of mercury (Hg) metal in the viability of gold fish (Cyprinus carpio, L.) maintained in a facultative pond 1 at Sewon Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) - Bantul, Yogyakarta.

The research samples were 150 one-month-old gold fishes. Waste water quality parameters in the facultative pond 1 of IPAL of Sewon as determinant variables were in the forms of the content of Hg, pH, temperature, DO, COD, BOD, and turbidity, while the viability of the gold fishes during the two-month maintenance was the dependent variable. Multiple regression analysis was done to determine the relationship between Hg content and the water quality of the facultative pond 1 of IPAL of Sewon on the viability of the gold fishes. Analysis of variance was used to determine if there was any difference between the viability of gold fishes maintained in the facultative pond 1 of IPAL of Sewon and ones maintained in a control pond (in Biology Animal House of FMIPA, UNY).

Results of the multiple regression analysis showed that there was a relationship between water quality and the viability of tested gold fishes, during two months of the maintenance (p <0.05). Based on the results of the variance analysis, there were significant differences between the viability of gold fishes in the facultative pond 1 of IPAL of Sewon and ones in the control pond (p <0.01).
Key words: bioaccumulation, viability, gold fishes, IPAL
