CHARMING SHANGHAI”

THE CITY OF MILAN OPENS AN EXHIBITION CELEBRATING THE CITY OF SHANGHAI AHEAD OF THE MILANO EXPO 2015
Palazzo Morando | Costume Moda Immagine

22 - 30 March 2014

Milan, 24 March 2014. The opening ceremony for the exhibition entitled “Charming Shanghai” took place today at Palazzo Morando – Costume Moda Immagine in via Sant’Andrea 6, in Milan. As well as celebrating the relationships between the cities of Shanghai and Milan on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of their twinship, the event is an important stage in the passing on of the torch between the two cities in view of the Expo 2015 after mayor Pisapia’s mission to China at the end of November 2013 and his official meeting with the mayor of Shanghai, Yang Xiong.
Highlighting the strategic and cultural importance of relations between the two countries, the ceremony was attended by the main organizations supporting the exhibition: the City of Milan and the Municipality of Shanghai, the Chinese Consulate General in Milan and the Italian Consulate General in Shanghai, as supervisors, and the Information Office of the Government of Shanghai, the organizing body.
The following took part as representatives of the main organizations involved in the project and in endorsing the passing on of the torch and the partnership between Shanghai 2010 and Milano 2015: Giuliano Pisapia, mayor of Milan; Li Xi, Party vice-Secretary, Municipality of Shanghai, Vicente Gonzales Loscertales, Secretary General, International Exhibitions Bureau, Stefano Gatti, General Manager of the Participants Division for the Expo Milano 2015, Chengbao Xiang, Chinese Vice Consul in Milan, Chen Anjie, Executive Committee chairman, China Corporate United Pavilion, and Chen Jing Xi, vice-director, Shanghai Municipal Government Information Office.
The “Charming Shanghai” exhibition – open to the public from 22 to 30 March 2014 in the historic premises of Palazzo Morando – is in two sections: a photography exhibition entitled “Expo: from Shanghai to Milan” and an exhibition entitled “Qipao”, focusing on the traditional Chinese dress.
The exhibition entitled “Expo: from Shanghai to Milan” features 160 photographs showing the development of Shanghai after its Expo 2010, not only the transformation of its urban spaces but also that of its citizens, the changes evident after hosting an event of global resonance like the Expo, and also Italy’s participation in Shanghai 2010. In addition to the photos, there are also two videos – “Shanghai Inspiration City” and “World of Light” – showing in an equally evocative way the transformations that the city of Shanghai and its citizens have undergone in the five years since their Expo.
The other section of the exhibition is entitled “Qipao” and illustrates the evolution of the traditional Chinese dress over the centuries through images and actual qipao, antique and modern. An emblem of the urban feminine figure in Shanghai, the qipao was originally worn by women in Manchuria during the Qing dynasty and has undergone many transformations in its history, in part reflecting changes in the role of women in Chinese society, in part the influence of other cultures, including those in the West.
Following today’s important event, tomorrow, 25 March 2014, will see the opening ceremony of the Italian Design Communication Center, the fruit of co-operation between the Shanghai Information Economy and Technology Commission and the city of Florence. This event is a new step in the co-operation between Shanghai and Italy in the field of design. The ceremony will be attended by the representative of the mayor of Florence and Li Xi, Party vice-Secretary, Municipality of Shanghai.
