CHARACTER MANDALA
Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning center and circle. It conveys the notion that any center is tied to its circumference and any circumference is always determined by its center. Together they represent wholeness. The character mandala gives you a way of representing the whole character, not just one aspect, as well as a way of exercising your own analytical skills and creativity.

DIRECTIONS

  1. Choose ONE character from Night. Consider what characteristics that character displayed and what happened to him/her.

  2. Look at the color symbolism chart. Circle any characteristics that fit your character.

  3. Think about which characteristic is the most important. Also, because characters are so complex, make sure that you have chosen traits from AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT COLORS.

  4. Write the name of the character that you have chosen at the top of the graphic.

  5. Keeping in mind the most important traits of the character that you have chosen, color (with colored pencils) your mandala with the colors that symbolize those traits. Choose a pattern that is pleasing to the eye.

EX. If the predominant characteristic would be confidence, for example, you may want to use more blue in the mandala or use blue mainly at the center or the very outer edges of the mandala.

  1. Once you have completed the coloring, write a paragraph about the character in which you introduce the character, explain what each color symbolizes and justify from the literature where/how that trait was displayed.

  2. Your mandala and the paragraph should be done neatly and thoughtfully, clearly displaying an understanding of the character.
