Abstract
Macaranga is the name of a genus from the large family of Euphorbiaceae. Comprising of almost 300 species, this type of genus is most native and commonly found in the peninsular part of the forests in Malaysia and also in Kalimantan, Indonesia. In Malaysia, almost 27 out of the 300 species can be found. The bark and leaves of three species of Macaranga, which are M. pruinosa, M. denticulatta and M. gigantea, have been chosen for bioassay screening of antityrosinase and nitric oxide inhibitor. Antiyrosinase is an important aspect in preventing skin pigmentation while nitric oxide inhibitor is part of anti-inflammatory mechanisms. All samples are extracted by sonication in methanol. The methanolic extracts will be screened for bioactivity and the active samples will proceed to undergo fractionation and isolation of the active compounds. The active compounds isolated will be purified and identified by using several chromatographic technique and NMR spectroscopy, respectively.
