Lena Pope Home Civic Literacy Internship: Development Department

Agency History:


Mrs. Lena Pope and the Martha Sunday School Class at Broadway Baptist Church established Lena Pope Home in 1930 to meet the needs of children and families during the depression and post war years. As the needs of the community have changed, so Lena Pope Home has evolved to meet those needs – impacting approximately 20,000 individuals, children, and families annually.
Lena Pope Home’s current Program Services include:


Chapel Hill Academy Charter School:

In August of 2008, Lena Pope Home opened Chapel Hill Academy, a public charter school in southwest Fort Worth, to provide parents with a new choice in elementary education. Chapel Hill Academy is an open enrollment charter school dedicated to preparing children for a successful future. The goal is to provide a stimulating, creative environment that peaks a child’s interest and curiosity and embraces their individual learning style.



Community-based counseling services:

Includes a wide array of programs that provide counseling, support, assistance, and life skills training to children, youth, adults, and families. Services are designed to provide a continuum of care from prevention to early intervention with the goal of preserving and strengthening the family.



School-Based services:

Offers classroom based behavioral intervention to students in grades 3 – 12, in various schools across Tarrant County. Provides regular, special, and therapeutic services to students with severe emotional and/or behavioral disorders. The goal is to prevent or decrease the gap in the student’s educational functioning by providing the student and family members with the support and ancillary services needed to improve classroom behavior and overall functioning.

Time Requirements: Varies. (some evening and weekend hours may be necessary)
Requirements: Volunteer application, Resume, Cover Letter, Writing Sample, Interview with Director of Development
Opportunities: Students volunteering with the Development Department will be offered a variety of opportunities including: fundraising event planning, set-up and execution; foundation and grant research; grant writing; networking with Lena Pope Home Board of Directors and community volunteers; participate in quarterly newsletter writing and publication; and data entry;

Requirements: Volunteer application, Resume, Cover Letter, Writing Sample, Interview with Chapel Hill Academy Principal
Opportunities: Students volunteering with Chapel Hill Academy - Education will be offered a variety of hands-on opportunities including: direct student involvement, mentoring with children, reading/tutoring children one on one or in small groups; attending weekly teacher staff meetings; and assisting teachers with in class activities.

Opportunities: Students volunteering with the Lena Pope Home Executive office will be offered a variety of opportunities including: assisting in the development of a 3-5 year long-range plan for the agency; information gathering, including interviewing various staff and community partners; participating in a Lena Pope Home board meeting; and assisting in the developing of the written long-range plan for dissemination to board, staff, and external partners.

Opportunities: Students volunteering within the Lena Pope Home  Finance/Accounting office will be offered a variety of opportunities including:  reviewing  federal, state, and local requirement to ensure our internal control procedures  are in compliance ,  reviewing accounting procedures, assisting in the development of  monthly financial reports; and information gathering  for federal, state, and local contract compliance, which includes Texas Education Agency, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, United Way, others.

Opportunities: Students volunteering within the Lena Pope Home’s DAEP – Education will be offered a variety of opportunities including:  training in the Boys Town Social Skills curriculum, providing behavioral intervention in the classrooms, individualized tutoring and/or mentoring with middle or high school students, measuring outcomes based on student performance, participating in transition planning for students returning to their home schools, visiting home schools (as needed) to ensure student’s success
