GALVESTON’S GRAND OPERA HOUSE TO PRESENT

Comedian Bill ENgvall, october 6
The Grand 1894 Opera House presents “Blue Collar” comedian Bill Engvall on Friday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. Born in Galveston in the middle of a hurricane, Bill Engvall has become a national superstar best known for his “Here’s your Sign” routine, and his involvement in the WB Network® show Common Ground with Jeff Foxworthy, and Larry the Cable Guy.
According to Engvall, “Stupid people should have to wear signs that just say, ‘I’m Stupid’, that way you wouldn’t rely on them.” It would be like, “Excuse me…oops…never mind, didn’t see your sign.” In 1996, with over 500,000 copies of his “Here’s Your Sign” debut album in circulation, people everywhere were laughing at Engvall - and laughing at themselves - when they inadvertently asked the obvious. With his side-splitting commentary on everything from bungee jumping to public restrooms, and judging your biological output (fatherhood), to his 20+ years of marriage, Engvall presents an uproarious view on life.

Engvall was working as a nightclub DJ in Dallas when he decided to take a stab at stand-up comedy and began doing shows at the Dallas Comedy Corner. In 1992, he won Best Male Standup Comedian at the American Comedy Awards, and moved into sitcom TV with an appearance on Designing Women and a regular role on the spin-off Delta. After his success with Here’s Your Sign, a tour with like-minded everyman comic Jeff Foxworthy was next; that in turn led to a part on Foxworthy's sitcom. Bill followed in the footsteps of Foxworthy, releasing a song in 1997 accompanied by a country star. “Here’s Your Sign (Get The Picture)” was recorded with Travis Tritt and made the top 30 on the country chart, the top 50 on the pop chart, and was certified gold after just a couple of months. The albums Dorkfish followed in 1998, with Here's Your Christmas arriving in 1999. In mid-2000, Engvall released Now That's Awesome and embarked on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, again with Foxworthy, as well as Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White.
