The Halifax Mail, 7 January 1941, p. 8, col. 2:
News of the sudden passing of Edward (Spud) MURPHY on Dec. 31 came as a distinct shock to numerous friends in the city, particularly old army comrades of the early 1900's and co-workers on the waterfront. The veteran was at the South Terminals shortly before he was stricken, and he was in his usual good spirits, walking along, apparently as smart as the good soldier he was 40 years ago.
Mr. MURPHY was one of the most popular figures in military and civilian circles since, as a youth of 19 years, he enlisted in the Third Special Service Battalion, the R.C.R. We have heard of his smartness in drill which resulted in his being picked from among the trained men to give a display at the Provincial Exhibition in 1900. He was a boxer and won a heavyweight championship in Quebec. He was one of the originals of the No. 5 Detachment C.P.A.S.C., and was among the smartest appearing on the streets in the attractive Lilywhites blue and white uniform.
During the First Great War he served with the 66th P.L.F. and was on the Military Police. He had an opportunity to continue soldiering but decided to re-enter civil life, a step he said, a short time ago, that he regretted. The sympathy of all is extended to his widow and relatives.

The Evening Mail, Tuesday, 24 September 1907, p. 3, cols. 2,3:
Pathetic Tale of the Sea
Two Fishermen Rescued After Being Adrift in Open Dory, Without Food or Water for Three Days and Nights
NORTH SYDNEY, September 23 - Given up as lost - victims to the old ocean, two fishermen, Patrick NOLAN, of Placentia, and Benjamin GERRIOR, of Arichat, who strayed from the schooner Judique 40 miles off Low Point, September 4th, at five in the afternoon, turned up this morning on board the schooner Muriel Y. Young, which arrived here. For four days and nights the men were buffeted by blinding lightning and fierce seas, and when picked up on Saturday, 75 miles off Ramson, were exhausted and on the verge of madness.
The tale of hardship told your correspondent this morning by NOLAN was one of the most trying heard for many days. Only their rugged constitutions saved the mariners from an awful death. "From Wednesday until Saturday", says NOLAN, "we had no food or water. On the second day, during an awful cold rain, thunder and lightning storm, GERRIOR ate a rotten squid which he found in the bottom of the dory. Immediately he took sick and that night became delirious. The sail was carried away. Believing all hope gone we lay down to get our first sleep, caring not what our end might be. When we awoke in the morning the sun shone, but nothing but the blue expanse of ocean was to be seen. From steering my arm became paralyzed, but I still held a hope of seeing a passing sail. This continued until Saturday at noon when we were taken helpless from the bottom of the dory and put on board the schooner. The men are to be sent to Gloucester by the American consul.

The Evening Mail, Monday, 14 March 1904, p. 3:
The death occurred this morning, after a painful illness, patiently borne, of consumption, of Miss Alma OAKLEY, aged seventeen years. Miss OAKLEY'S funeral takes place at Herring Cove on Wednesday next.
The Evening Mail, Thursday, 17 March 1904, p. 3:
SHELL ALMOST HITS A CHURCH
One Fired From MacNab's It Strikes Few Feet From Herring Cove Church
Two Minutes Afterwards Congregation Dispersed and Were Gathered On the Spot
Councillor Hayes Saved His Life By Ducking and Snow's Driver Narrowly Escaped
Albert BURNS, driver for Snow & Co., undertakers, had an experience yesterday, which he does not care to repeat, through the carelessness of a party of soldiers at big gun practice at McNab's Island. Snow & Company were conducting the funeral of Miss Alma OAKLEY, at Herring Cove, and the remains had been taken into the Roman Catholic church at that place for the service, Mr. BURNS remaining outside with the hearse. Shortly before the close of the service he leaned up against the northeast corner of the building, and had not been there many seconds before he was startled by hearing a peculiar noise, and immediately noticed Councillor HAYES, who was walking toward the church, stoop. And he did so just in time, for no sooner had he done so than a twelve-pound steel shell flew right over him almost touching his hat. It passed close over the backs of the horses, badly frightening them, and struck the ice just five yards from the northeast corner of the church, breaking up a patch about five feet square. It rebounded and flew into the woods, where it was picked up later. Not two minutes afterwrds the service was closed and the congregation was gathered in front of the building where the shell struck. It is a piece of steel about eight inches long and three inches in diameter, and is now in charge of Councillor HAYES, who will bring it to the city and enter a complaint to the military authorities.
The Evening Mail, Friday, 18 March 1904, p. 8:
Patrick HAYES, of Herring Cove, who called at The Mail office this morning, had in his possession the shot fired from a gun at McNab's Island during recent gun practice, and which nearly struck the church at Herring Cove. He was on his way to see Major-General PARSONS in connection with the matter. The shot weighed over twelve pounds.

The Evening Mail, 25 March 1907, p. 10, col. 2:
The death occurred yesterday (Palm Sunday) of John O'BRIEN, after a tedious illness, at the age of 72 years. Deceased was a well-known printer, for many years foreman of The Herald job department, and filling the same position in other offices of the city at different times. Of a retiring nature and much given to reading and study, he became well informed on current topics and problems of scientific thought. He was an American civil war veteran, having served through the greater part of this campaign in the 9th Massachusetts regiment, and was again drafted in the 3?2nd Massachusetts regiment on the field, in which he remained until the close of the war. His wife predeceased him on Palm Sunday, three years ago, a remarkable coincidence. He leaves to mourn his loss, four sons and a daughter - Henry F., employed at Alex. MOODY'S printing office; John A. (Fred), engineer on the cable steamer Mackay-Bennett, at present in New York; Arthur J., in Toronto, printer, and Albert P., grocer, of this city, and Mrs. RYAN, wife of Mr. RYAN, bandmaster of the R.C. regiment. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon (Tuesday), from his late residence, 34 North street, at 2.30.

The Evening Mail, Wednesday, 10 October 1906, p. 12:
On the afternoon of Friday, September 28th, the little community of Ship Harbor was startled by news of a distressing fatality, the victim being Harry O'BRYAN, son of Sylvester O'BRYAN, aged 14 years and 5 months. The lad lost his life while sailing across the harbor, after a visit to a friend, John STODDARD, on the west side of the harbor. When halfway across the boat - a one-sail-boat - was struck by a squall, filling and sinking immediately. Mrs. James FAHIE, at whose house young O'BRYAN boarded, saw the boat sink and at once gave the alarm, her husband reacing the spot in a few moments. No trace of the unfortunate lad could be seen. The body never rose again, and in spite of continuous effort on the part of neighbors, it was not recovered until 10 o'clock last Saturday morning.
The funeral took place from Mr. FAHIE'S home, Rev. Father SWEET officiating both at the church and grave. This was Father SWEET'S first ministration at Ship Harbor, to which he was recently appointed. Much sympathy is expressed for the lad's parents, as well as for Mr. and Mrs. FAHIE, who were much attached to him.
On the occasion of the funeral many beautiful flowers were received, the list being as follows:- Cut flowers, Florence O'BRYAN; wreath, Mrs. Ralph BLAKNEY; wreath, Mrs. Joseph CHAPMAN; cross, Miss Myrtle RUSSELL; cut flowers, Helen and Eva MARTIN; cross, a friend; a memento, Gregor O'B. FAHIE.

To the Editor of the Mail
Sir, - It was with a feeling of grief I read the announcement of the death of an old friend and comrade in arms, Corporal Robert PORTEOUS, of the Royal Engineers, which took place on May 13th. Corporal PORTEOUS, or Sapper PORTEOUS as he was at the time of our soldiering, was one of those who took a many pride in his profession and would as soon have thought of suicide as bring disgrace to the uniform he wore. He was always ready to "fall in" at the last tap of the sticks, and placed duty before pleasure in all things. He has attended his last muster on the square, and now goes to answer the roll up higher, where I feel assured he will be found in the front rank. He married some nine years ago, a Miss Jane BLANK, of Eastern Passage, who survives him, and to whom our heartfelt sympathy goes forth in this her dark hour.

TWO HALIFAX MEN KILLED ON STEAMSHIP TYRIAN
Plug in Boiler Tube Blew Out and Patrick McGrath and Patrick Purcell Were So Badly Scalded That They Died in a Few Hours
SYDNEY, October 29. - The government cable steamer, Tyrian, Captain O'LEARY, arrived in port at ten o'clock last night with the news of a fatal explosion that occurred on board the steamer while off Cape North early yesterday morning. The Tyrian left North Sydney late Friday night to complete repairs to the Magdalen Island cable. Matters proceeded satisfactorily until about seven o'clock Saturday morning, when a plug in one of the boiler tubes blew out, filling the engine and boiler rooms with steam and gas. Fireman Patrick PURCELL and Trimmer Patrick McGRATH were engaged in cleaning out the fire at the time of the blow out and before leaping to the deck were horribly scalded. Upon examination their condition was found to be critical and all was done for the unfortunate sufferers that could be done with the limited medical facilities at hand. After consuming about seven hours in making temporary repairs to the boilers, Captain O'LEARY headed the steamer for Sydney at full speed, the object being to

secure the best medical assistance for the injured men. PURCELL succumbed while the steamer was coming into dock, and McGRATH died at 10.30 this morning, medical assistance being of no avail. Patrick PURCELL was aged 60 years, and Patrick McGRATH, 40 years. Both are Halifax men, and the remains will be forwarded to their homes to-morrow. PURCELL is a widower and McGRATH unmarried. The Tyrian will make permanent repairs to her boiler before leaving port.

The Evening Mail, Tuesday, 31 October 1905, p. 10:

Died - The funeral of Patrick PURCELL, who was scalded to death on the steamer Tyrian, will take place from the residence of his brother-in-law, 26 Lockman street. The deceased leaves four sons and three daughters to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father. (Newfoundland and Boston papers copy.)

DARTMOUTH NEWS - OLDEST INHABITANT DEAD

The death of Margaret ROBERTSON yesterday removed from the community probably the oldest person in Halifax county, if not in the province. She ws 103 years of age, and although she has been confined to her bed for more than a year her intellectual faculties have been preserved in a remarkable degree and she could conerse rationally on all matters, her memory carryng her back to times beyond the recollection of all others. The deceased was a daughter of James ROBERTSON, who came to this country from Scotland more than 125 years ago and settled in Musquodoboit. When she was about eighteen years of age her family removed to Dartmouth, where they lived in the old Russell house on the Asylum road. Some years later the family removed to Cole Harbor, where the Robertson homestead near the Dyke became one of the best known resorts in the county. There the deceased and her family resided for many years. There she watched the progress of improving the dyke reclaiming large tracts of land from the sea. The place was a great fishing resort and many of the older generation will remember the deceased. After the death of her father she removed to Dartmouth and has since resided with her niece, Miss Ellen ACKER on Ochterloney street.

The Evening Mail, Monday, 21 October 1907, p. 6, cols. 1,2:
The news of the death yesterday, at her residence, 59 Birmingham street, of Margaret Cecilia, wife of I.E. SANFORD, of Sanford Brothers, will be received with genuine regret by all who knew her, and more especially by her friends in the parish of St. Mary's. It has been known that her condition for a week past has been such as to encourage little hope of her recovery, but it was yet thought possible that, in spite of her alarming symptoms, her life might be spared. However, this was not so to be, and in spite of the most devoted nursing and best medical skill, she passed away yesterday.
Just a month ago Mrs. SANFORD was taken ill, of pneumonia, but at that time no one suspected a fatal outcome. She apparently was well advanced toward recovery, when she had a relapse and complications involving the heart made themselves apparent. This was about a week ago and was recognized then to be an undoubtedly alarming development. It is thought that the shock of the very sudden death, two months ago, of her sister-in-law, Mrs. J.William SMITH, was a very appreciable factor in her own. It was a distressing blow to her, as to all the family.
Mrs. SANFORD, who was Miss Margaret Cecilia CAMERON, was 39 years of age, and the centre of a particularly happy home. She was a devout Catholic, attending St. Mary's cathedral, and lending generously of her energies and means to all the parish work. She was one of the most energetic workers for the fair to be given in November by the Children of Mary of the parish, in aid of the poor. To her had been assigned charge of the fancy table, and for weeks before she was taken ill, she had been hard at work making pretty things for her table. She was also a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary of St. Mary's Young Men's Society. By her friends of these organizations she will be sadly missed.
Mrs. SANFORD is survived by her husband, for whom much sympathy is felt. Her mother, Mrs. William CAMERON, resident in Halifax, a sister, Miss Mary CAMERON, also of Halifax, and a brother, Duncan CAMERON, of New Glasgow, also survive her. The funeral will take place at half-past two o'clock on Tuesday afternoon.

The death occurred this morning at his home in Cole Harbor, of John D. SETTLE, a well-known farmer and dairyman of that section, and indeed, well known through the province. In this city, particularly, he had a wide circle of acquaintences and friends, who will deplore his very sudden death, which was due to heart failure. He was a man whose sterling worth was recognized by all who knew him. His wife and ten children survive him, and they have the deep sympathy of many, in their bereavement. His funeral will take place from his late residence, at three o'clock Thursday afternoon.
