A. P.E. ISLANDER'S MURDER. - On the 20th inst. in Los Angeles, California, Aldolfo SILVAS was hanged for the murder of James McINTYRE. The latter belonged to Campbell's Cove, East Point. P.E.I. About 2 o'clock on the morning of July 21, 1884, McINTYRE and Timothy HICKEY were on New High street, Los Angeles. When they arrived in front of No. 318, a saloon kept by Frank OLIVLER, HICKEY, who was on the inside of the walk, jostled against the occupant of a chair. The touch was but trifling, but in an instant the occupant jumped up and commenced to call one of the men disagreeable names. A scuffle immediately ensued. The lounger in the chair drew a large knife and made a lunge at McINTYRE. The latter tried to beat off his antagonist, but being unarmed his efforts were futile. While McINTYRE was using his hands his assailant thrust his knife several times into his body. These blows had fatal effect and within twenty feet from where the scuffle commenced McINTYRE fell, and soon expired. His companion, HICK EY, in the meantime had deserted him. The man who committed the deed was Adolfo SILVAS.

The Evening Mail, Monday, 5 November 1906, p. 5:
PLANT LINER HALIFAX HAS FLAG HALF-MAST
Ship's Carpenter, John McLean, of This City, Washed Overboard and Drowned in Terrible Hurricane That Swept the Steamer's Decks - Twenty-Four Hours Overdue Reaching Boston.
BOSTON, November 4th. - With her flag flying at half-mast, her deck houses battered, and broken, the crew of a shipwrecked fisherman on board, and everyone of her own sixty-two passengers thankful to reach dry land once more, the Plant line steamer Halifax came into port yesterday morning, twenty-four hours overdue. From stem to stern the big ship gave eloquent testimony of her fearful encounter with a North Atlantic hurricane, and the signal of death at the masthead denoted that one of the crew, John McLEAN, the ship's carpenter, had paid a fearful tribute to the fury of the wind and sea. Thursday last the full force of the storm overtook the Halifax, and for twenty-four hours terrific seas washed the decks continuously, battering down the doors, flooding the saloon, and stripping off the woodwork as though it had been paper. While panic reigned in the cabin, and the women passengers were plunged in despair, Captain ELLIS and his men stuck manfully at their posts, and to their heroic efforts the salvation of the ship and its terrified passengers is due. McLEAN was washed overboard and lost in the darkness before there was time to give the alarm or to throw him a line. __________________
H.L. CHIPMAN, manager of the Plant line company, received a telegram Saturday morning from Boston stating that the steamer Halifax, which sailed from here Wednesday at midnight had arrived in Boston Saturday morning, being over fifty-five hours on the trip, and that during the voyage John McLEAN, carpenter of the steamer, had been washed overboard and drowned. Mr. McLEAN was formerly carpenter on the steamer Alpha, but for some time past has been in the Plant line service. The deceased was a man of sterling qualities and was highly respected by all who knew him.
Mr. McLEAN lived at No. 48 Robie street and leaves a wife and two small children. Mr. CHIPMAN notified Rev. Mr. GLENDENNING, whose church the deceased attended, and who conveyed the sad news to Mr. McLEAN's family.
When the Halifax left the Plant wharf Wednesday night it was raining, but not blowing hard, and she evidently struck the storm Thursday when well down the coast, as the telegram stated she hove to for twenty hours in Thursday's storm.
The passengers by the Halifax were: - Miss MELVIN, Miss WEYNOTT, Miss N. VANCE, Mrs. S. DeYOUNG, J. WEBSTER, Miss McQUARRIE, Miss CHISHOLM, Miss L. BROWN, Miss K. MURPHY, Misses CAVANAGH, D. GREENOUGH, Miss G. STEWART, I. MAHER, E. BOUTILIER and wife, E. KROVES, C. COLCHESTER, Mrs. A.C. STONE, S. KAYZO, J.A. CARMICHAEL, A.I. GILZEE, Mrs. W.H. HALLIDAY, Mrs. H. MERRILL, Miss E.K. DeFREYTAS, S. SMITH, Miss DEMPSEY.
Miss Fannie FRYER, former secretary of the Y.M.C.A., this city, was also a passenger.
