A. MARR, who was found dead yesterday in a Boston tenement house, was a native of Mabou, Cape Breton, and was 43 years of age. He lived in this city for two or three years, being employed by Dominion Iron and Steel company as a pattern maker. He went to Boston a few months ago. His wife and family of six children are still living here. Before coming to Sydney, MARR and family lived in Bath. Me. He belonged to the Oddfellows' Lodge there and they are having [the] remains taken to that city for internment. Page 9: The dead body of John A. MARR, of Sydney, was found, face downward, in a bath tub on the fourth floor of the tenement house at 130 Dart street, where he had been lodging last night. As the body was partly clothed, and from the fact that his bed had been opened, it is thought that he had retired, felt faint and gone to the bathroom for water. Medical Examiner Stedman was summoned after the finding of the body by Miss Stuart, the landlady, but from his superficial examination all thought of foul play or suicide was dispelled. It is said that the man has a wife and six children living in Sydney.

He came to Canada aabout twenty years ago, and for a number of years has been on the Public Gardens staff. He is survived by four sons and one daughter. The former are - Thomas, in the employ of Messrs. HENDERSON and POTTS; William, of the Royal Canadian Regiment, Charles, now living in Boston; and Alfred, of Spokane, Washington. The daughter is Miss May MARSH, now living in Boston. He had, during his residence here, made many friends one and all of whom will heartily regret the news of his death. Notes: Material Type: Newspaper article Subject: Biographies,Loyalists,Country Harbour (Guysborough County) The Halifax Mail, 14 March 1941, p. 11: COUNTRY HARBOR WOMAN OBSERVES 102nd BIRTHDAY COUNTRY HARBOR, March 13 - Mrs. Angelina MASON, who was born at Country Harbor and has lived here all her life has just celebrated her 102nd birthday. Although confined to bed, she is cheerful and bright, and on her birthday received a number of callers who came to pay their respects and offer felicitations. The only surviving member of a family of twelve children, Mrs. MASON is a daughter of the late James and Marie HODGSON. Her life has been closely woven with the historic past of the country and she is a member of a noted family in its early history. Her grandfather Edward MASON was one of the Loyalists who came to Halifax n 1749 and was a Major in the French army. Her mother was a daughter of the Leiutenant Governor E.D. HODGSON who is buried in St. Paul's cemetery, Barrington Street, Halifax. Mrs. MASON who has witnessed at first hand a century of development and progress, a cavalcade of outstanding and historic events, the birth and growth of the young nation Canada, still possesses a fresh memory and recalls with clearness and accuracy the events which were transpiring during her early life as well as those of the later years. She married John MASON at Sherbrook 80 years ago. He passed away 28 years ago. She adopted two children Mrs. James (Annie) MASON, British Columbia, and William WILSON with whom she resides. Until the demands of age forced her to rest she had been a leading member of the Methodist church and took an active part in the life of the congregation, her home being always open to clergy of all denominations. On her birthday March 7 she received many messages and telegrams of congratulation. H. MASON, death following a stroke of paralysis. Although in her sixty-fifth year, Mrs. MASON had enjoyed perfect and even robust health, up to the time she was stricken, and the news of her death therefore greatly shocked and saddened the neighborhood, where she was much beloved. She was of sunny and genial nature, and her house was noted for its generous hospitality. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Amy PRIDE, and is survived by her husband and eight children - a daughter, Mrs. SALSMAN, and seven sons. Five of the latter live at home and two - Elisha and Robert - are in the west. Rev. Mr. BANFORD conducted the funeral service, being assisted by Rev. Mr. Porter SHIRLEY. Arbuckle, of Ponds, Merigomish. Mrs. Mason had not been in good health for some time and three weeks ago she underwent a surgical operation from which she recoved sufficiently to leave her bed, but on Thursday was taken with a relapse and gradually grew worse. Mrs. Mason was 75 years old and is survived by eight sons and three daughters to mourn their loss of a kind and loving mother. Capt. James Mason was a native of Halifax county and for many years was interested in the merchant service, plying between Halifax and West Indies, being captain and owner of several vessels. The death of Mrs. Mason is also mourned in the United States, where six of her children reside none of whom were able to reach Merigomish in time for the funeral. Jan 1906, p. 10 [page torn]: The very sudden death of Samuel MASON, justice of the peace, at St. Margaret's Bay, about ten miles from Bowser's, occurred on Saturday. The deceased had been subject to fits of chills, and he always resorted to the remedy of bathing his feet in hot water. Friday he was about his work as usual. Saturday morning he complained to his wife that one of the chills was coming on. He sat down on a chair and Mrs. MASON went to the stove to get some hot water. When she returned she was horrified to find her husband dead. He was a farmer and very well to do. He leaves besides his widow, three brothers. Miss McArthur, who was seventy-eight years of age, was born at Cape Mabou, Inverness County, the daughter of John McArthur and Mary McIntyre; her mother, Mrs. R. Roberts, Sydney, four nephews, John W. McArthur, Hector McArthur, Duncan McArthur, and Duncan Macleod; also two nieces, Mrs. Angus C. McIsaac, with whom she had been residing for some time. The news of his death will be received with deep regret in the wide circle of his friends, and comes as a sad shock to them, owing to the fact that his illness was a very short one, dating only from Friday last. However, it became almost immediately apparent that his symptoms were such as to cause grave solicitude and he rapidly grew worse, death as stated, supervening shortly after midnight last night. Mr. McCROW was a native of Aytown, Berwickshire, Scotland, and was in the sixty-ninth year of his age. He came to Halifax in 1862, as a member of Battery 5, Fifteenth Brigade, Royal Artillery, and during the forty-four years of his residence here came to be regarded as one of our most useful men, adding to business acumen the sterling qualities of character which win and retain friends. He was a most kindly and humane man, delighting in doing good quietly and unostentatiously, and the number of those to whom he has lent a helping hand will never be known. Mr. McCROW went in a provisional battalion as captain at the time of the Riel rebellion, and did gallant service. He was a member of the society of Royal British Veterans, a past master of Virgin Lodge Free Masons, joining the Grand Lodge in 1876; was a member of Murray Division, Sons of Temperance, and a past grand worthy associate of the Grand Division as well as a member of the National Division. He lent his influence always to the promotion of good causes and will be greatly missed in the various organizations of which he was a member. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Miss Ella McCROW.
