HALIFAX DEAD AND WOUNDED
Private G. JOHNSTONE, one of the two Halifax men wounded, resided at 111 Maynard street. He was a carpenter by trade, and enrolled in H company at Halifax, but was transferred to the Quebec company.
The Evening Mail, Friday, 2 March 1900, p. 3, col. 2:
The militia authorities received a telegram to-day from Ottawa, confirming the report of the death of Private JOHNSTON, of Halifax. The person referred to is Grenville JOHNSTON, carpenter, who resided on Agricola street. The deceased was an amateur oarsman of considerable ability, having successfully competed in a number of races.
The Evening Mail, Saturday, 3 March 1900, p. 5, col. 5:
The father of Grenville JOHNSTON, one of the Halifax volunteers killed at Paardeburg, is blind. He at present resides at Black Point, St. Margaret's Bay. Mr. JOHNSTON was made blind by an accident. He has a son who is also blind. Robert JOHNSTON, another son, and with whom the deceased resided, is employed by the Electric Light Company, and resides at 111 Creighton street. He is a member of the 1st Canadian Artillery, and served with the Halifax provisional battalion during the Riel Rebellion.
The Evening Mail, Monday, 5 March 1900, p. 5, col. 4:
HUBBARD'S COVE, March 4 - A feeling of sadness pervaded the whole community when it was learned for a certainty that Granville JOHNSON, of H company, First Canadian Contingent, died of wounds received in the engagement at Paardeberg on the 18th of February. This brave lad was a most promising young man and well liked by all. He was a son of Captain Robert JOHNSON of Black Point, who had the terrible misfortune to lose both eyes in a blasting accident several years ago. In conversation with Captain JOHNSON in January, he told your correspondent that "if he had twenty sons he would not keep one of them back from going to fight for their country." It was this same spirit that prompted his plucky son to volunteer for battle and lay down his life for queen and country on a South African veldt.
