Fish and tomatoes, cultivated together: it ’s possible with EM!
Agriculture is changing more and more in an industry. Small farmers often have to cope against larger, more industrialized farms.
This is just one of many reasons why it is necessary to get as much return as possible from buildings and grounds. Also, we all realize more and more that something must be done to our pollution. Water is one of the most precious things on earth and if we are not careful with this flowing gold, water shortage threatens to be a realistic picture of the future.
That they did realize in the technical institute at Kortrijk, Belgium. In their search for new projects and current developments, they came on the idea of growing fish under the gutters of hanging tomatoes.
After many research and calculations, they started with their project on September 1, 2009.
Tilapia fish were cultivated under different types of tomatoes.
In the Netherlands they are already familiar with this practice, unfortunately here in Belgium we can only talk about pilot projects.
For this experiment, the greenhouse was completely refurbished (renewed).
Under the hanging gutters of the tomatoes were hot water basins provided. These are made of polyester 1 cm thick. Each basin has a length of 15 m and a conical shape. The bottom is round and smooth just like the inside, to make the gliding of the solid feces into the drain hole at the end of the basin easier.
The water temperature is kept constant at about 27 degrees. The water is constantly in circulation and filtered, first through a drum filter, followed by a biofilter.

Every day the water is refreshed for 5-10% with rain water from the silos and the fish are fed according to there growth development. The waste water that flows over and is enriched with nitrates coming from the feces, is now used as feed water for the tomatoes .
The rest of the water coming from the tomatoes is repeatedly filterd in a closed loop. Thanks to this practice, there is no waterwaste in the environment!
The solid waste goes into the recycling system of a new container field.
Unique is the fact that the residual heat of the water can also be used to heat the greenhouse . This is both an ecological and economic solution!

What about EM? EM is used during the filtering process. With a proportioner EM is added to the water in the biofilter.

A biofilter processes the liquid and suspended parts of the droppings. In the filters all the microorganisms are present, they are necessary to convert this material from nitrite into nitrogen Those microorganisms attach themselves to the PE material in the filter water. To ensure good microbiological balance their must be added EM (Effective Micro-organisms). This material consisting of PE plastic blocks with openings and insicions are ideal for bacteria to hide in. These blocks are constantly kept in motion by air bubbles under the material pumped into the water. A real Jacuzzi for the microorganisms ! Where the blocks are touching, bacteria can not attach, that’s why there are insicions in the PE material.
Adding EM ensures the biological balance in the water. Emerging diseases or infections are thereby effectively suppressed.
During the whole project no diseases or infections could be observed. On the contrary, wounds sustained in combat seem to heal very well. During periods where there was no EM added to the water, more dead animals were observed. This was probably due to smaller wounds who where infecting into the bloodstream . Also we noticed foam flakes on the water of the biological filter and a clearly disturbing fishy smell.

Within 24 hours after adding back EM into the water, those three effects were eliminated.
During the whole test with EM, there was no significant mortality.
The use of EM shows, according to these experiences, that fish farming without use of antibiotics is possible. The least thing we can say is that it is hopefull! Another prove that EM surely can save the World!
