TURKISH
BASIC COURSE
Volume II
Lessons 9 – 16
Pronunciation lessons
Updated from DLI
March 2008 (revised April 2008)
PREFACE
These drills are taken from the DLI basic course and revised for current word usage and context.
The use of drills is often underutilized when learning a second language. A musician practices a song over and over again, focusing on different aspects each time; once for accuracy, once for dynamics, again for timing etc… In the same way, the language learner must repeat their work over and over again, each time practicing one aspect of the sentence; first pronunciation, next for correct emphasis, again for intonation and then for speed and fluency. Each aspect is important to speaking well and the multiple practices help the brain to retain the information being used. These drills can be used to simplify the drilling process and give a start for drilling practice. Enjoy as you learn Turkish!
The first 16 lessons of this course emphasize pronunciation. There are extra pages showing the syllable breaks and correct emphasis for each word. To allow the learner to focus 100% of their energy on pronunciation, there are no grammar explanations included in these lessons. Understanding isn’t in focus as much as pronunciation. Be patient and the explanation will follow.
Kolay gelsin.
Extra homework (Section 9 of each lesson) was incorporated with this lesson book from the original homework book in the DLI series. This addition was made in February 2009
These exercises can be used as part of the learner’s daily learning cycle. It is best to review the completed exercises with a native Turkish speaker (language helper) to get good clear answers. The person “correcting” the homework doesn’t necessarily need to understand the English to verify the correctness of the translation but can should make sure that the Turkish sentences you have written are correct in grammar and form.
The Turkish Basic Course was originally produced by the United States government as it is therefore public domain. These books are adaptations from the original books and have been updated for modern language usage and vocabulary. In addition, references to American cities and places have been reduced to make the books more applicable to life in Turkey.
