Department of Neurosurgery



NSG1-3010/F JI ANY - Neurosurgery

Course Coordinator: L. Madison Michael II, MD

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.
This rotation can be scheduled for two-weeks as an elective (IDE1-4001/H)
Patient Care

Students will perform pertinent history and neurological examinations, interpret neurodiagnostic studies, produce a differential diagnosis, and formulate a treatment plan. Opportunities for student participation in operations are abundant.



Medical Knowledge


Students will build upon their knowledge of brain and spinal anatomy during the course of performing examinations and interpretations of diagnostic studies. Students will also learn neurosurgical-specific methods for performing pre-operative evaluation, indications for surgical and non-surgical management, neurosurgical operative techniques, management of neurosurgical and neurological emergencies, and management of post-operative problems.

Practice Based Improvement


Students will be required to participate in the monthly M&M conference as well as the weekly resident-led Monday Night Conference, during which complication and issues related to patient care will be discussed. They will also attend our Wednesday academic days in which basic neuroscience and 3D neuroanatomy are taught

.

Interprofessional and Communications Skills


Students will be required to work with neurosurgery residents on interdisciplinary teams to provide care for a variety of specialties (i.e., neurology, emergency, peds, etc.). Students will also be required to collaborate with other specialties when reporting results of neurosurgical consults. Students will be required to communicate via face-to- face meetings, phone, email, and other methods of communication.

Professionalism


Students will be expected to comport themselves at the same professional level as neurosurgical residents by demonstrating a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities and adherence to ethical principles.

Systems-Based Practice


Students will be expected to learn and assist residents with the various hospital systems used at MUH, MED, and LB, including using CPOE, creating and maintaining electronic health records, placing orders, and other hospital-specific systems.

The student will have some responsibility for 2-4 patientss per week. The students will do pre-operative examination, surgical assistant, post-operative rounding, and reading about the patient’s disease and its treatment.

Students will be directly supervised by faculty or residents in everything that they do. They will learn to perform lumbar punctures under supervision, how to suture a wound, how to care for a wound, and how to drill burr holes in the skull.


Students will be expected to attend regular educational conferences and seminars held during this rotation, including the semi-monthly brain tumor board conference, the weekly neurosurgery grand rounds (which includes a wide variety of topics), the weekly Monday night conference, M&M conference, monthly journal club, and any other conferences that are not on the regular schedule but that residents are required to attend. The volume of conferences ranges from 13–15 per month.

They will be required to round on the weekends. This is usually a one to two hour event. They will be required to take two overnight calls per rotation. The exposure to call will allow them to understand the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of neurosurgical emergencies.
NSG1-4010/F NEUROSURGERY

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.


This elective will involve a four-week exposure to the neurosurgical patient and all aspects of clinical care and research, including pre-operative evaluation, indications for surgical and non-surgical management, discussion of neurosurgery techniques, management of neurosurgical and neurological emergencies, and management of post-operative problems. The course will be combined with Neuropathology and Neuroradiology to ensure a broad basic understanding of the neurosurgical approach to disease. The rotation will refine the student’s ability to perform pertinent history and neurological examinations, interpret neurodiagnostic studies, produce a differential diagnosis, and formulate a treatment plan. Opportunities for student participation in operations are abundant.
The student will be expected to attend regular educational conferences and seminars held during this time. Faculty members are available to mentor students in basic short-term neurosurgical research projects within the Department.


NSG9-4010/F VISITING ELECTIVE IN NEUROSURGERY

This is a face to face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.
This course number is used by UTHSC students only for scheduling a visiting elective at another medical school for which credit is granted at UTHSC.

OBG1-3001/F OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY CLERKSHIP

Clerkship Director: Roberto Levi-D’Ancona, M.D.

Grading: 70% clinical, 30% standardized test

This is a face-to-face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 14 credit hours.
This Clerkship is 4 weeks of Obstetrics, 2 weeks of Gynecology and 2 weeks of Gynecologic Oncology. It includes lectures, problem-based cases, conferences, and grand rounds.  Obstetrics consists of labor and delivery at the Rout Center/Birthplace of the Regional One Health Medical Center, high-risk obstetrics, routine obstetrics, and clinic at Regional One Health, the Center for High Risk Pregnancies, and the Health Loop. Call is 12 hours: one week of day call, one week of night call, one Saturday day or night call, and one Sunday day or night call.  Gynecology at Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women is one week of surgery, rounds, and one week of clinic at Regional One Health and the Memphis Health Center. Gynecology (Gyn-B) is one week of surgery and rounds at Methodist Germantown Hospital with clinic at Regional One Health and one week of surgery, rounds, and clinic at Regional One Health and night call. Gynecologic Oncology is at Baptist Memorial Hospital for Women or Methodist University Hospital and includes surgery, rounds, and clinic at the West Cancer Center.

This 4-week elective is designed for students interested in an in-depth experience in high-risk obstetrics.  Students will spend time in the high-risk specialty clinics, antepartum testing and obstetrical ultrasound, as well as attend rounds and MFM conferences. The student will be supervised in spontaneous vaginal deliveries, forceps deliveries, and obstetrical surgical procedures. This elective is not offered in Blocks 5 or 6.

 
OBG1-3020/F JI ANY - SENIOR CLERKSHIP IN GYNECOLOGY

This is a face-to-face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours. 
Students must contact Dr. Levi-D’Ancona at leviro@uthsc.edu to schedule this elective.

This 4-week elective will allow the student to become more familiar with Gyn outpatient care involving issues such as infections, colposcopy, and contraception.  The student will also be actively involved in surgery under the supervision of faculty and Residents on the Gyn service.  The student will be expected to attend all assigned rounds, clinics, and conferences. This elective is not offered in Blocks 5 or 6.



OBG1-4010/F CLINICAL OB/GYN FOR THE GENERALIST

This is a face-to-face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.
Students must contact Dr. Levi-D’Ancona at leviro@uthsc.edu to schedule this elective.

This elective provides students with an in-depth view of the obstetrical and gynecological subspecialties, as well as the opportunity to work with a private practitioner.  This elective can be customized to the student’s needs, but in general consists of 4 weeks divided into different clinical settings.  These may include time spent with private general Ob/Gyn practitioners, reproductive endocrinologists, gynecological oncologists, or a pediatric gynecologist. This elective is not offered in Blocks 5 or 6.

 
OBG1-4020/F CLINICAL ELECTIVE IN GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY

This is a face-to-face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.

This 4-week elective will allow the student to become more familiar with Gynecologic Oncology topics, surgical and medical treatments, as well as examine three or four gynecologic cancers with a review of the literature. The student will be responsible for approximately 10 patients per week.  There will be supervision by Dr. Santoso and/or Residents. The student will also attend weekly Gynecologic Oncology management conferences.

This elective is not offered in Blocks 5 or 6.

 
OBG1-4040/F CLINICAL ELECTIVE IN REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGY & INFERTILITY AND GENETICS

This is a face-to-face clinical rotation offered in the fall and spring and receiving 7 credit hours.

 

Students must contact Dr. Levi-D’Ancona at leviro@uthsc.edu to schedule this elective.  Students must also receive approval from Dr. Martin dmarti27@uthsc.edu or Dr. Detti ldetti@uthsc.edu. This 4-week elective consists of reproductive endocrinology and genetics clinics, REI ultrasound procedures, REI surgery, and fertility preservation techniques. The student will also observe laboratory procedures related to semen analysis and oocyte manipulation, and cryopreservation techniques. This elective is not offered in Blocks 3, 10, 11 or 12.
