The First Day of My Life” Bright Eyes

This is the first day of my life newness, excitement, birth, little
Swear I was born right in the doorway
fear, doorway=entrance, new
I went out in the rain
beginning, going into the rain is
Suddenly everything changed there uncomfortable, tentative, something undone
Spreadin' blankets on the beach before

Yours is the first face that I saw

Think i was blind before I met you (s)he is light, opened his eyes,he sees
I don't know where I am different world, (s)he’s awakened new senses
I don't know where I've been and new feelings
But I know where I want to go
So I thought I'd let you know
YEAH THESE things take forever love takes a long time and he’s not
I especially am slow
been good with it, never understood it
But I realise that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night

Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange
You said everything changed
You felt as if you'd just woke up (s)he wasn’t fully aware, world’s
And you said,
different, real?, new beginning
This is the first day of my life,
I'm glad I didn't die before I met you
But now I don't care I could go anywhere with you
And I'd probably be happy.

So if you wanna be with me

With these things there's no telling
We just have to wait and see
But I'd rather be working for a paycheck paychecks are earned and worked for,
Than waiting to win the lottery
lotteries are won- based on luck,
no guarantee of winning
Besides maybe this time it's different
I mean I really think you like me...

“Love is a Battlefield” Pat Benetar

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand

No promises, no demands
Love Is A Battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong
Searchin' our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love Is A Battlefield

You're beggin' me to go, you're makin' me stay

Why do you hurt me so bad?
It would help me to know
Do I stand in your way, or am I the best thing you've had?
Believe me, believe me, I can't tell you why
But I'm trapped by your love, and I'm chained to your side
We are young, heartache to heartache we stand
No promises, no demands
Love Is A Battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong

Searchin' our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love Is A Battlefield

We're losing control
Will you turn me away or touch me deep inside?
And before this gets old, will it still feel the same?
There's no way this will die
But if we get much closer, I could lose control
And if your heart surrenders, you'll need me to hold

We are young, heartache to heartache we stand

No promises, no demands
Love Is A Battlefield

We are strong, no one can tell us we're wrong

Searchin' our hearts for so long, both of us knowing
Love Is A Battlefield

Hole – “Hit So Hard”

Put me up above the boy

The one I love I should destroy

My sweet tooth has burned a hole what she desires has hurt her, sweets

Forget about it all are desirable, but not good for you,

Burned a hole= hurt her, cavity, she’s had

He hit so hard too much, gotten too close, feels something- he doesn’t

I saw stars

He hit so hard

I saw god
He’s cold give him a candycoat unfeeling but beautiful, tasty, can’t swim=

He can’t swim but he can float swimming you move to a destination- you

One by one they all fall down work, floating the water holds you up, you

I look at him and drown do nothing, you stay in the same place, she’s

Lost in his good looks, pulled down, overwhelmed

He hit so hard

I saw stars

He hit so hard

I saw god

He’s so candy my downfall

Melts in my mouth, until he’s nothing at all

This keeps me, I can’t sleep

He rages to be true
The Dance” Garth Brooks
Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared beneath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I the king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have changed it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance
The dance is exciting, sometimes slow, sometimes fast, intimate, complex, has rhythm and beat, the dancers move together, they are partners, the dance though is only a moment in time, the song ends and so does the dance, this relationship ended and it was painful, but the singer believes it was worth it for that moment which can not be taken away, there was good in it and just because it is ended doesn’t mean that it didn’t exist.
His partner was his world, everything he wanted, he was the king, living the high life, in a position of power and luxury, a king’s every desire is met. A king’s job last his lifetime he assumed that the relationship would last and it didn’t (the king fell)

Part Two (rough draft)

People say love like the word has one meaning, but in an emotion that large and multifacted how can we have just one word to encompass new love, puppy love, crushes, worn out love, painful love, chaotic love, familial and friendly love. That is precisely why artists like Bright Eyes, Hole, Pat Benetar, and Garth Brooks use figurative language to identify and individualize love.

Bright Eyes was “blind before I met you(their new lover)” and Hole was “hit saw hard/ I saw stars” when they discuss love in its early stages. The emotion in “The First Day of My Life” leads to newness, a rebirth, an awakening of new senses and a more positive view of the world. In contrast Hole’s love is based on desire and leads to pain when her, “Sweet tooth has burned a hole.” Both artists see the feeling as powerful and overwhelming. “Hit so hard/ I saw stars/ Hit So Hard/ I saw God” is violent and powerful figurative language; the feeling is like a physical blow. Seeing stars and seeing God are images of pain and exctasy as the two are intermixed in this song; the listener is unsure whether this is good or bad, whereas Bright Eyes’ version the feeling is just as strong but turns rain into a holiday, “I went out in the rain/ Suddenly everything changed/ They’re spreading blankets on the beach.”

Country king, Garth Brooks, and alternative newcomers Bright Eyes share some common ideas in their songs. Both believe in the value of love and that it isn’t always easy and it sometimes painful. “The Dance” compares love to a dance in that it can be brief and intimate. Dancing requires a partner who share something connected to a specific moment in time, the time of that song. During the song they are joined as one. Garth says even if he’d known it was going to end painfully he’d have done it any way, “I could have missed the pain, but I’ve had to miss the dance.” He is saying, in essence, it was worth it. Bright Eyes would rather be “Working for a paycheck/ Than waiting to win the lottery” he’d rather put time and effort into the relationship instead of giving up on it and trying to luck into the perfect one. The paycheck/lottery metaphor is great because they the lottery is uncertain and most people lose; the lottery requires no effort; a job requires time, effort, and dedication, and that dedication earns the reward.

Pat Benetar and Courtney Love are both trapped in relationships that they are not sure are good for them.

“Paying the Fare”

Seasons make no sense

when your lover goes

Everyday is winter with every night alone

when your lover goes

Sleep has left and your heart’s a stone

when your lover goes

Heart-shaped scars

And (celluloid) memories cover creases and overflow

Precipices of the farthest reaches of my soul
Some say it isn’t fair and it shouldn’t be so

Some say it hurts too much and you have to let it go

Some say it wasn’t worth it, but I don’t think they know

The pain is just the fare, the journey’s through the sun and snow

The pain is fair, the fare is pain and you have to pay to go

Tattoo’d with the time we shared

When my lover laughed

Dancing on the corner to a little song I made

With my lover slow

Every breath was inspiration, golden days, silver nights

When my lover _________

Heart-shaped scars

And (celluloid) memories cover creases and overflow

Precipices of the farthest reaches of my soul
Some say it isn’t fair and it shouldn’t be so

Some say it hurts too much and you have to let it go

Some say it wasn’t worth it, but I don’t think they know

The pain is just the fare, the journey’s through the sun and snow

The pain is fair, the fare is pain and you have to pay to go
Not all the times were good

Not every memory bright,

but there was you and there was me and there was us,

there was us

a jigsaw completed can come apart, but the picture still remains

it can be built again, built again,

I’ll build again
Some say it isn’t fair and it shouldn’t be so

Some say it hurts too much and you have to let it go

Some say it wasn’t worth it, but I don’t think they know

The journey ends, but the sights were seen

I paid the fare I took the ride and I was glad to go

I paid the fare I took the ride and I was glad to go

LEVENGOOD LYRIC PROJECT PART II RATING
“The First Day of My Life” Bright Eyes
I really liked this song. The metaphors were interesting and original and the melody simpe and compelling. It was strengthened for me by the knowledge of their other songs most of which are a bit more depressing and pessimistic so lines like, “These things take forever/ And I especially amm slow” become more powerful and genuine. I also like that while it is happy, “People are spreading blankets on the beach,” and the memory “Remember when you drove all night/ just to be with me/ you said everything changed.”

Added to this is a realistic view that things may not work out or be easy, “I’d rather be working for a paycheck” but they are he is still willing to try, and the final line, “I really think you like me,” is vulnerable, child-like, and touching. The song feels so heartfelt and genuine I have to give it my highest score.

“Love is a Battlefield” Pat Benetar
Alright, I like this one too. Whihle obviously a product of the 80’s, it was actually the first one I’d heard that describes love as something difficult and not all flowers and butterflies. People get hurt and it’s confusing. The music is sometimes secretive and sometimes passionate; it’s like a battlefield. You can feel her always on the edge of pain and loss; check out the final verse. The figurative language is sparse, but the main metaphor is brilliant. I give it a high score, but not the highest.
“Hit So Hard” Hole
This song is so patently punk, it’s lyrics and sound are both tough. It is filled with pain and vice, The candy metaphor runs throughout and is returned to again and again. You know Courtney belie ves and has lived through what she’s saying. I do not believe this song is as universal as the other two. Courtney has problems with addiction and impulse control. She is passionate. I don’t think everyone is the same. It is a great song and a true song, but a litle too Courtney.
“The Dance” Garth Brooks
I agree wih Garth. My lyrics most closely follow his theme. He’s said it better and he’s a better performer. It’s a great song. Metaphors are few, but the main one is strong.
