Supplementary Table 1 Source of sequence data for species used in this study. Data were downloaded either as single or pairs of large chromosomes with a total target size of ~250Mb (completed genomes from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, NCBI: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/), as large first draft assemblies with decompressed file size typically in the range 2-4Gb but often with large blocks of ‘N’s (Broad Institute: http://www.broad.mit.edu/ and University of Washington: http://genome.wustl.edu/) or as large contigs with total size 2-20Mb (NIH Intramural Sequencing Center: http://www.nisc.nih.gov/). The latter three species were clearly much smaller samples than the rest and yielded too few trinucleotide repeats to make meaningful estimates of maximum size.
