Footballer Luis Suarez given 8-match FA ban

Summary: Liverpool's Luis Suarez was given an eight-match ban and a £40,000 fine by the Football Association. He was fined after being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra.

The hearing was told Suarez used "insulting words". A Liverpool statement said: "No one else on the field - including Evra's own Manchester United team-mates and all the match officials - heard the conversation between the two players.”

Liverpool also wanted to know what was going to happen to Evra as he used racist/abusive words too. Evra had admitted that he insulted Luis Suarez in Spanish. Suarez actually told the FA he had not heard the insult.

This case is important as for the first time there is a concern about what footballers say on the football pitch. Evra complained straight after the match and said "There are cameras; you can see Suarez say this word to me at least 10 times."

FA chairman said ‘There are definitely cultural differences for a lot of players coming from South America and from other countries into England. But we still expect people who come and work here to obey the laws of England.’
