Main Objectives:
This course is developed for students with little or no knowledge of Mandarin. Students will learn to use Pinyin to pronounce Chinese words with correct tones and pronunciations. Students will also learn to write Chinese characters with the right stroke order and learn to use up to 310 characters (or about 180 phrases) introduced in this textbook.
Basic grammar will be introduced including parts of speech, simple sentence structures, etc. Students will learn to compose simple dialogues and compositions in Pinyin and simplified characters. Chinese culture, customs and traditions will be introduced based on the themes and topics covered in the book or through Chinese festivals during the year.
In this beginners’ course, students will learn to speak and write grammatically correct simple Chinese, to understand and answer simple questions, to create simple dialogues, and to read short passages and dialogues either in Pinyin or in simplified characters. Students will also be familiar in Mandarin with daily greetings and food, basic classroom expressions and school supplies, times, numbers, days of the week, months of the year, family members, weathers and sports etc. On completion of Mandarin 9, students are prepared to take an intermediate Mandarin course, such as Mandarin 10.
