Prof. Dr rer physiol. Dipl. Phys. Thomas Penzel

Prof. Dr. rer. physiol. Dipl. Phys. Thomas Penzel was born in Hamburg, Germany. He is a physicist and physiologist. In 1991 he completed his doctorate thesis in human physiology at the University of Marburg, Germany. In 1995 he made his habilitation thesis in physiology in Marburg. In 1997 he received the certificate "Medical Informatics" issued by the German Society for Medical Informatics and the certificate "Somnology" issued by the German Sleep Society. In 2001 he was appointed as professor of physiology at the medical school in Marburg. Since 1982 he is working in the sleep laboratory in Marburg being responsible for development of biomedical methodologies for diagnosis and therapy of sleep disorders. He has been at the board of the German Sleep Society from 1993 to 2001 and he is the chairman of the national sleep laboratory accreditation committee. Since 2001 he is the president of the International Society on Biotelemetry (ISOB). In 2001 he received the portuguese Bial price with an international group for research on neurotelemedicine. His research interest is biomedical signal processing and medical device development. He has published 120 papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals and co-edited 7 books. In 2003 he was appointed editor in chief of the scientific journal "Somnology". Since 1992 he is a member of the IEEE EMBS and since 2006 he is a senior member of the IEEE.
My mission as chair of the IEEE joint chapter for Germany, Austria and Swiss would be to support networking among members and with the national biomedical engineering societies, and the national medical informatics societies. I will support all grant opportunities especially on a European level and will help to find partners for specific research in our field of Biomedical Engineering. I will promote young researchers from our region to participate in the annual IEEE EMBS conferences and will support them in presenting their research results in order to make our strength more visible.
