PRESS RELEASE
Protecting the Environment though Art!
Hermes Airports is hoping to convey to thousands of passengers travelling through Larnaka International Airport a message of respect for Nature and Protection of the Environment though art. By hosting the artwork “Zenon of Kitium”, which was inspired and created by the students of Frenaros Gymnasium using recyclable bits of wood, Hermes Airports is aiming to promote man’s love for and peaceful coexistence with the natural environment.
It was possible to house the artwork at Larnaka International Airport as a result of the collaboration of Hermes with the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative. The artwork was unveiled by Mr Philippos Drousiotis, Chairman of Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative and Mr Wes Porter, Chief Executive Officer of Hermes Airports. Dr Aravella Zachariou, representative of the Ministry of Education and Culture, parents and relatives of the students, and other officials were also present during the ceremony.
In his speech, the Chief Executive Officer of Hermes Airports, Mr. Wes Porter stated that the artwork unveiled today depicts the great Cypriot philosopher Zenon of Kition, who was a pioneer in the struggle to protect the environment. Zenon believed that people can live in peace and in complete harmony with nature, because apart from the instinct for self-preservation, they also possess a social instinct which leads to association and collaboration between people for the common good.
Special praise goes to the students of the Frenaros Gymnasium who worked with great dedication for the last couple of months to create the “Zenon of Kition” artwork. These are: Andreas Hadjigeorgiou, Lazaros Zacharia, Andreas Zisimou, Andreas Matheou, Petros Ioannou, Andreas Stavrou, Costas Ioannou, Kyriacos Hadjilouka, Constantinos Komodromou, Neophytos Moschovias, Yiannis Laoutaris, Raphael Kyriakou, Michael Roushias, Andri Antoniou, Natassa Panayiotou, Georgia Sozou, Panayiotis Themistokleous and Kendeas Pavlou.
Hermes Airports would like to congratulate and express its sincere thanks not only to the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative but also to the students of Frenaros Gymnasium and their teacher, Mr. Vangelis Evangelou for the remarkable piece of art which now adorns the Arrivals area of Larnaka International Airport.
