BACKGROUND

Scientific and Performing Contests

and Conferences as One of the Main Components of

Creative Work of Performing Musicians

Scientific and performing contests and conferences, which have been regularly held in Baku, are aiming at multilateral learning of effects of style, genre, music language, musical and historical process, the attraction of investigation results of allied sciences, as well as development of synthesising thinking. The high professionalism and mastery of contemporary performing school demanding not merely excellent technical and practical training of performer, but also a possession of solid background of scientific and theoretical knowledge.

The idea of modelling of multifunctional musician specialist aware of different technologies has found a practical realisation in unique and ever non-existing in world practice scientific and performing conferences and contests, which were developed at school studio – an experimental base of Azerbaijan Conservatoire (now Baku Music Academy named after Uzeir Hajibayli).

The history of those contests and conferences in Azerbaijan has been more than a quarter of a century.

The main aim behind scientific and performing conferences and contests has been a convergence of practice and theory of performance, which has been crucial for in-depth comprehension of the content of music, as well as refining of professional skills and knowledge.

The very first scientific and performing conference was held in April 1983. Among the participants there were high-professional musicians of different specialities, particularly National and Honoured artists, Professors Zohrab Adigozalzada, Lutfiyar Imanov, Rafik Guliyev, Sarvar Ganiyev, Namik Sultanov and many others.

In addition, since that year, scientific and performing contests have been put on a regular basis with the participation of students from BMA and music faculties of other high schools. Afterwards, the students of School Studio of Baku Music Academy joined the process. So, all the chains of music education system in Azerbaijan help shape of comprehensively developed musician professional with wide general-theoretical background.

The final conclusion of achieved results in the field was the First Republican Scientific and Performing Contest “Young musicians talk and perform” (2008) devoted to the 90th Anniversary of Kara Karayev and Scientific and Performing Conference of teachers and students of BMA and School Studio “Piano in creativity of Kara Karayev” (2009). They demonstrated efficiency of conducting scientific and performing contests and conferences as well as necessity of learning of this experience by specialists from different countries, which altogether paved the way for holding in the year of 2010 of the First International Scientific and Performing Contest and, in its frames, the First International Scientific and Performing Conference.

KARA KARAYEV FIRST INTERNATIONAL

SCIENTIFIC AND PERFORMING CONTEST OF PIANISTS

(1 – 10 December 2010)

1. Kara Karayev First International Scientific and Performing Contest of Pianists is held among musicians aged 10 to 30 years.

2. The Contest is organised by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the basis of Baku Music Academy named after Uzeir Hajibayli.

3. The Contest is held with the support of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Union of Composers and the Union of Musical Workers of Azerbaijan.

THE AIM OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND PERFORMING CONTEST

1. Promotion of the creativity of Kara Karayev by means of its in-depth learning and performance.

2. Convergence of theory with the practice of performance.

3. Mutual enrichment of musical cultures of different countries.



CONTEST TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. All musicians below 30 years old are eligible to take part at the contest.

2. The selection of the participants will be made upon submitted textual reports.

3. The number of participants is limited to 50 musicians.

4. The themes for reports and performance should serve the compositions of Kara Karayev and the composer of the country of origin. Each contest participant should presents his/her report at the first stage, and perform the composition of Kara Karayev (to be selected from the List given below) and one of the composer of the country of origin (created not earlier than in 1950).

5. The time limit for each round is set as 15-25 minutes for the first age group, and 20-30 minutes for the second age group.

6. The selected participants will receive their invitations before 1 November 2010.

7. The order of performance will be set by the casting of lots.

8. All rights for audio and visual records are reserved by the Contest Organising Committee.

9. Organizing committee pays for competitor’s staying at the hotel during their active participation in competition. Transport fees are paid by participants.

10. The winners are determined by the competent jury. The winners from each age groups will be given the rank of “Laureate of the International Contest”. All awarded with special diplomas will be given the rank of “Diplomant of the International Contest”.

11. The awards are paid in Azerbaijani Manats (AZN).

12. The jury reserves the right to award prizes as well as to split them among the contestants.

13. The members of jury shall not vote for the participants from their own class.

14. The decision of jury is final and non-appealable.

15. All participants will be issued with the certificates of participation.

16. The contest laureates will take part at the final concert, which is to take place at the Great Hall of the Baku Music Academy named after Uzeir Hajibayli.

First Round

1. The report about the compositions of Kara Karayev, which are to be performed at the second round, should not exceed three-four, and four-five pages of printed text for the first and second age groups respectively. In particular, it could contain the following information:

- brief information about the creativity style of the composer;

- exposure of imaginary and emotional content, as well as personal perception and understanding of the composition;

- aspects related to performing interpretation – review of means of expression and writing in respect to their reflection in the artistic performance, originality of the composer’s approach to interpretation of the acoustic capabilities of musical instrument and the diversity of the surface palette, as well as determination of the specificity of performing tasks and technical difficulties (with demonstration of possible ways and means of their overcoming).

- analysis of the process of synthesis of traditionally national and modern means of expression, aspects of interaction and interrelation of the Karayev’s creativity with the heritage of international music art.

2. Brief introduction (no longer than two pages of printed text) on solo concert compositions of the composer of the contestant’s country of origin.

Note: If necessary, piano illustration of fragments is allowed during oral presentation of main concepts and analysis of the compositions.

1. Piano composition of Kara Karayev (one of the first eight compositions from the List mentioned above at personal discretion).

2. One or more solo compositions of the composer of the contestant’s country of origin of the second part of XX – the beginning of XXI centuries (the year of creation to be shown). For contestants – citizens of Azerbaijan, it may be the composition of any Azerbaijani composer other than Kara Karayev.

FOR THE SECOND AGE GROUP

1. Piano composition of Kara Karayev (one of the first eight compositions from the List mentioned above at personal discretion).

2. Kara Karayev. “12 fugues” (1981): one or more fugues at personal discretion.

3. Solo concert composition (may be several, depending on the length) of one composer of the contestant’s country of origin of the second part of XX – the beginning of XXI centuries (the year of creation to be shown). For contestants – citizens of Azerbaijan, it may be the composition of any Azerbaijani composer other than Kara Karayev.



Note: All piano compositions shall be performed by heart. Only piano fugues of Kara Karayev are allowed to be read.

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED BY THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE SCIENTIFIC AND PERFORMING CONTEST OF PIANISTS

1. Application to the Organising Committee from the participant or musical school with indication of the theme of report and performing programme (accurate name of compositions, year of creation, length), address, telephone, E- mail.

2. Copy of the birth certificate or passport.

3. Two coloured photographs 13 x 18.

4. Brief autobiography and personal creativity attributes.

5. Text of report about the compositions of Kara Karayev and brief introduction about the composition of the composer of the contestant’s country of origin in one of four languages – Azerbaijani, Turkish, English, or Russian with the list of referenced literature.



APPLICATION PROCEDURE

All contest applicants shall submit their applications along with all supporting documents to the Organising Committee before 1 October 2010 (the delivery date will be determined by the postmark) to the following address: 98, Shamsi Badalbayli Str., Baku, AZ 1014, Azerbaijan. II prize – 1500 AZN

PIANO IN THE CREATIVITY OF KARA KARAYEV”

In the frames of the contest there will be held the Scientific and Performing Conference “Piano in the Creativity of Kara Karayev”. All pianists with no age limitation can take part at the conference. The themes for report presentation and performance along with the stated above may be the following ensemble compositions of the author: two romances for voice and piano by the verses of A.S.Pushkin “On hills of Georgia” (“На холмах Грузии») and “I loved you” («Я вас любил») (1949), Sonata for violin and piano (1960).

Apart from contest, the conference will be held in one round consisting of two parts: scientific and performing. Each participant shall perform one of the Karayev’s composition (allowed to be read) followed by the presentation report on interpretation of the opus performed.

Time frame: 20-30 minutes.

4. Text of report in one of four languages – Azerbaijani, Turkish, English, or Russian with the list of referenced literature – to the Contest Organising Committee along with the application and other supporting documents no later than 1 October 2010.

Notes:

  1. For ensemble performance of compositions of Kara Karayev, the application should contain information about the availability of concertmaster. In case of unavailability of an concertmaster, the Organising Committee will provide the concertmaster (singer or violinist) free of charge. If the participant is intended to perform with his/her accompanist, all expenses related to his/her participation at the conference shall be incurred by the participant.

  2. The selected participants will receive their invitations before 1 November 2010.

  3. Upon results of the conference and contest, there will be organized a Workshop devoted to the panel discussion of the perspectives of learning and performing of the piano creativity of Kara Karayev.
