PRESS BRIEFING

(presse08/027/07.30)

One of the largest Christmas markets in Germany invites you for a stroll from November 24th through December 22nd, 2008.

The 2008 Leipzig Christmas Market

In the past few years, Leipzig has turned out to be one of the most popular travel destinations in Germany visited at Christmas time. Last year, Leipzig Tourismus und Marketing (LTM) GmbH was glad to receive an all-times high in terms of inquiries from tour operators and reservations for hotels and restaurants.
A “top seller“ attracting guests from all over the country is the Leipzig Christmas market the history of which dates back into the year 1767. It is open from November 24th through December 22nd, 2008, with six areas set in chime with the fascinating historical scenery of the Leipzig city center. In spite of major construction work that is underway in the city center, the Market with its approximately 250 stalls will live up to its reputation of being one of the largest Christmas markets in Germany once again. Traditionally, the main area of the Christmas market will be Marktplatz market square where visitors will be able to marvel at a Saxon spruce Christmas tree as high as twenty meters, and enjoy a wide variety of performances at the market square stage. Visitors specifically value the many pleasures children will be able to find at the Leipzig Christmas market. Be it the Fairy Tale Forest in the Böttchergasse alleyway with its many scenes from various fairy tales or the market square stage where kids can meet Santa Claus for a chat, or rather the historic merry-go-round, our little visitors will definitely enjoy being here. As for grown-ups, there will be a wide variety of commodities on sale, as well as things worth seeing for the tourist.
For one thing, there’s the world’s largest free-standing Christmas calendar which has been the biggest attraction for years with its 857 square meters, in the Böttchergasse alleyway, which will be designed by Leipzig schools in 2008 again. This is the place you want to be to see how one of the windows sized three by two meters will be opened in front of many marveling visitors at 16:30 hours each day from December 1st through 24th.
The historical Christmas Market of “Ancient Leipzig“ at the Naschmarkt square will give visitors an idea of local traditional crafts and art. In Reichsstrasse street, there will be a small Finnish village offering typical delicacies and culture. The historical Mirror Tent of the Krystallpalast will be expect its visitors at the Congress Hall near the Zoo this year where they will stage a vaudeville performance featuring international artists in this winter season from October 29th, 2008 through February 1st, 2009.
A special treat:

We are happy to announce that locals and visitors to Leipzig alike will be able to enjoy the large miners’ parade of the Sächsicher Landesverband der Bergmanns-, Hütten- und Knappenvereine e.V. at 16:00 hours on December 20th. A special highlight will be the closing concert performed by the miners’ orchestra at Augustusplatz square at 17:00 hours.

Dainties such as oven-fresh pretzels, Pulsnitz gingerbread or the very popular red wine punch will invite visitors to stay just a little bit longer. Other main attractions will include handcrafted Christmas decorations from the Erzgebirge or a large selection of toys, earthenware or herbs. Equally, visitors may not want to miss to listen to the traditional performance of the trombonists staged at the balcony of the Old Town Hall (daily at 18:00 hours, on Saturdays and Sundays at 13:00 hours and at 18:00 hours).
The Leipzig Christmas Market will be opened by Burkhard Jung, the mayor of Leipzig, at the Marktplatz market square at 17:00 hours on November 24th, 2008, on which occasion the world-celebrated Leipzig based Thomanerchor choir will perform.
Opening hours are: Mondays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and

Fridays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
