Algae, Fungi, Plant Pathology and Bryophytes
Unit 1: Algae- General characteristics, Similarities and dissimilarities between algae and fungi Classification of algae (F. E. Fritsch), Cell structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic algae, Range of thallus organization, Various habitats of algae- terrestrial, aquatic- freshwater, marine, Types of life cycle, Reproduction in algae, Alternation of generation, Pigments in algae, Economic importance .
Unit 2: Structure and life cycle of the following genera: Cyanophyceae - Oscillatoria, Nostoc; Chlorophyceae – Chlamydomonas, Volvox, Oedogonium, Caulerpa, Chara; Bacillariophyceae – Diatoms; Phaeophyceae – Ectocarpus, Dictyota, Sargassum; Rhodophyceae – Polysiphonia.
Unit 3: Fungi: General characteristics, Classification of fungi (Alexopoulos and Mims), Hypha and mycelium, Fungal cell (ultrastructure), Growth, Hautorium, Nutrition, Reproduction, Economic importance. Structure and life cycle of the following genera: Plasmodiophora, Pythium, Mucor, Yeasts, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Pezia, Puccinia, Polyporus, Micorrhizae, Lichens – Usnea.
Unit 5: Plant pathology: Basic aspects of fungal diseases in plants – White rust of crucifers, Red rot of sugarcane, Paddy blast, Tikka disease of groundnut, Citrus canker, Little leaf of brinjal, Tobacco mosaic disease. Brief account of fungicide, pesticides and bio-control measures.
Unit 5: Bryophyes – History – origin of bryphytes – general characters – classification (Rothmaler, 1951). Characters of group Hepaticapsida, Anthocerotopsida and Bryopsida. Reproduction – vegetative, Asexual, Sexual – Life cycle pattern – alternation of generations – fossil bryophytes – economic importance. A detailed study of structure, reproduction and life cycles of the following genera – Riccia, Porella, Anthoceros and Polytrichum.
