Objective reached: Chevrolet reconfirms WTCC World Champion titles!

ZURICH, September 2011 - Chevrolet, which won its first World Champion titles in a FIA-sanctioned series in 2010, has already secured the 2011 WTCC World Champion titles three events before the end of the season. The brand confirmed its status of World Champion in both the Manufacturer and Driver World Champion in the year that marks the centennial of its foundation.
This new success in the world’s leading series for touring cars takes on an even greater dimension when considering that it was reached with a new version of the Cruze equipped with the brand new 1.6 turbo petrol engine, introduced this year to comply with the new set of technical rules adopted by the FIA.
Chevrolet and its technical partner Ray Mallock Limited (RML), the racing organization in charge of the brand’s WTCC programme, took on the challenge to design, develop and test the new engine from a blank sheet of paper. It took less than nine months, from January to September 2010, to have the new engine running in a race-car Cruze. Less than one year later, the new Cruze, fundamentally re-engineered to fit the new engine, is World Champion!
As the WTCC now heads for the final Asian tour, which traditionally concludes the season, only one last question needs answering: who will be the driver to take the 2011 WTCC World Champion Drivers’ crown? The only certainty is that it will be one of the three Chevrolet drivers as no other competitor has the mathematical possibility to secure the title. Yvan Muller, Rob Huff or Alain Menu will be free to take their chances as no team orders will be given, except to ensure fair-play.

Racing, a global shop window for the Cruze

Chevrolet’s involvement in the WTCC started in 2005, from a blank slate. Since then (first with the Lacetti/Nubira in 2005-08 and then with the Cruze from 2009), the progression has been constant, against fierce and much more experienced competitors. So far, in its first five seasons in the championship, Chevrolet has achieved an impressive record of 43 race wins, 24 pole positions, 36 fastest laps and 490 laps in the lead.

The WTCC racing programme has played a crucial role in building up the image of Chevrolet since the brand was re-launched in Europe in 2005, and has been a tremendous tool to communicate Chevrolet’s brand values and the quality of Chevrolet products to the public, dealers and employees. It has also allowed Chevrolet to re-connect with its roots in motorsports, which trace back to the early years of the 20th century, when Swiss-born founder Louis Chevrolet started to race the cars he personally built.

The Cruze was introduced in the WTCC in 2009, with great success (4 wins) in its maiden season. In 2010, the Cruze conquered both WTCC titles, with Chevrolet winning the Manufacturers’ crown and Frenchman Yvan Muller clinching the Drivers’ title. The WTCC racing programme is an integral part of the marketing plan to launch the Cruze on a global level, and the racing and street versions of the Cruze are even more closely linked than what is deemed normal in this case. The design and development of the Cruze has been conducted taking into account both the needs and constraints of racing and the lessons learnt from the valuable laboratory that motorsports represents.
The World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is one of the only four FIA World Championships, alongside Formula One, the WRC and the FIA-GT. It features cars close to the regular production vehicles. Real cars, real racing is the championship’s tag-line that very appropriately encapsulates both the spirit of the WTCC and Chevrolet. With races taking place in five different continents (Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa) and offering a truly global audience, the WTCC is the ideal platform to showcase both a product like the Cruze and the Chevrolet Spirit, so well symbolized by Louis Chevrolet’s motto: “Never give up!”.
