Goals/Objectives

• 
  More accurately describe the morphological features of cutaneous lesions.
  
• 
  Based on your morphological descriptions, formulate a reasonable differential diagnosis.
  
• 
  Recognize common benign, pre-malignant and malignant skin tumors.
  
• 
  Learn how to manage common dermatological problems seen on the hospital wards, and in the clinic.
  
• 
  Correctly prescribe topical corticosteroids, anti-acne medications, topical and systemic antibiotics, antivirals and parasiticides for cutaneous infections and infestations, keratolytics, emollients, sunscreens, etc.
  
• 
  Understand the indications for and principles behind Mohs micrographic surgery.
  

• 
  Become comfortable with simple procedures such as cryotherapy, punch biopsy, shave excision, simple elliptical excision, intralesional steroid injection, and KOH examination of scales.
  
• 
  Observe cases of Mohs micrographic surgery (if available at site).
  

1. 
   Daily clinics (speak to the secretary at individual site for a schedule): Your role in the clinic will be to see patients, obtain an adequate history, perform a dermatological physical examination and tentatively come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan, under supervision of staff and dermatology residents.
   

2. 
   Ward consult service: During working hours (8:00 – 17:00) you will be expected to take first call for patients on the ward, then discuss and see the cases with the consult resident at your hospital, and participate in ward rounds when they don’t conflict with clinic duties.
   

3. 
   Attend the academic half-day every Thursday morning (confirm location with residents).
   

4. 
   Morphology sessions every second Friday at the MGH pathology conference room at 7:30AM.
   

5. 
   Prepare a 10-15 minute presentation for the academic half-day on a topic that relates dermatology to your field of interest, or of an interesting case that you would like to research and present. You must let the chief resident know your topic by the end of the second week for scheduling purposes, and to ensure that the topic was not recently discussed.
   

6. 
   In order to successfully complete your rotation, you must be present for the minimum allotted number of days as defined by the collective agreement. If you will be taking call in other departments during your elective with us, you must provide the Administrative Officer at the clinic that you will be at with the call schedule so that it can be posted at the clinic.

   Pathology rounds every second Wednesday mornings at 7:30AM in the pathology conference room of the MGH. Slides are available for pre-viewing in the Pathology residents’ room at the MGH.
   

2. 
   Book Club every Tuesday morning at 7:30AM at the MGH pathology library or at the RVH. (Ask the chief resident what chapters of Fitzpatrick will be covered and for the location of the session).

   Dermatology Grand Rounds-Thursday mornings from 8-12. (Confirm location with residents).
