MASSACHUSETTS AMBULANCE

TRIP RECORD INFORMATION SYSTEM

(MATRIS)
Effective October 7, 2013

MATRIS Version 1.6

(Supersedes Version 1.5 Effective December 15, 2010, Version 1.4, Effective March 19,2009 and Version 1.3, Effective May 1, 2008)

The Massachusetts Ambulance Trip Record Information System (MATRIS) is based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) EMS Dataset Version 2.2.1. The NHTSA Dataset was created through a consensus based national data conference of professional organizations and federal partners which included the National Association of State EMS Directors and the Trauma/EMS Systems program of the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Maternal Child Health Bureau and is known as NEMSIS, the National EMS Information System.

The goal of NEMSIS is to provide a standard for the collection of local, state, and federal data with consistent definitions and formatting suitable to evaluate the responsiveness and effectiveness of emergency medical services. High quality data will assist EMS agencies to identify service areas that need further improvement and promote decision making, protocol refinement, and resource allocation based on solid evidence.
In attached the Massachusetts Ambulance Trip Record Information System (MATRIS), those data elements to be collected as part of a National EMS Database are labeled National Element in the upper right hand corner. The additional data elements proposed for MATRIS are not labeled National Element. The dataset includes three separate components. A Demographic Dataset provides a standardized set of definitions describing an EMS System. An EMS Dataset provides a standardized set of definitions describing an EMS event, and an XML format and definition created to promote the movement of the NEMSIS Version 2.2.1 uniform data elements between data systems. Please see www.nemsis.org for more information. (Note: MATRIS Version 1.6 with the addition of two data elements: Crew Member ID (E04_01) and Crew Member Level (E04_03) supersedes Version 1.3 which superseded Version 1.2 with the addition of two data elements: Tube Confirmation (E19_13) and Destination Confirmation of Tube Placement (E19_14).)
Information provided in this document includes the following:

  • Name of the Data Element

  • Definition of the Data Element

  • Data Type of the Data Element

  • How to deal with missing or incomplete information

  • The Variables associated with each Data Element

  • What Data Elements are associated with the Data Element

  • Whether the Data Element is part of the medical record information (Trip Report) or is a quality management Data Element to be used internally by the EMS system and protected by Peer Review.

  • What Reports are possible through the use of the Data Element

  • Who is responsible for collecting the Data Element

  • How the Data Element is related to other National Data Tools such as NHTSA Version 1, NFIRS, and Utstein
