MASONICARE HEALTH CENTER THANKS NEARLY 200 VOLUNTEERSAND AWARDS 4 SCHOLARSHIPS TO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS




LouAnn Santiago of North Haven Recognized as Top Community Volunteer

Wallingford, CT, April 22, 2015........In celebration of National Volunteer Services Week, and in keeping with an annual tradition, Masonicare Health Center of Wallingford honored nearly 200 adult volunteers from in-house and the community at the 42nd Annual Volunteer Recognition Brunch held on April 10th at Ashlar Village, Masonicare’s Continuing Care Retirement Community located on the Wallingford campus.


Volunteers who contributed a minimum of 50 hours during the volunteer “year,” which extended from March 2014 to February 2015, received a pin. Altogether, 421 volunteers (including in-house, adult community, junior, and community service) contributed 39,147 hours this year.

Three volunteers from the community – LouAnn Santiago of North Haven (998 hours), Jill Doody (978 hours), and Roger Larson (678 hours) of Berlin and three volunteers from in-house –Marge Butler (884 hours), Jean Ferry (607 hours), and Barbara Boganski (428 hours), received special recognition for contributing the most hours during the year.

For the eighteenth year in a row, Masonicare Health Center awarded $500 scholarships to student volunteers who are pursuing careers in the healthcare field. Each recipient volunteered a minimum of 100 hours at Masonicare Health Center.

The students who will receive William Loefstedt scholarships are Ramsha Khan of Wallingford, who will be graduating from Lyman Hall High School and will study to become a pediatrician, and Amberly Lao of Wallingford, also graduating from Lyman Hall, who will be studying nursing/medicine. The Valerie W. Winchester scholarships have been awarded to Kristen Cappetta of Wallingford, graduating from Mark T. Sheehan High School, who will be entering a nursing program, and Danielle Richardson of Durham, graduating from Mercy High School, who will enter a pre-med program. The scholarship recipients are in the process of choosing their future college or university.

Masonicare Health Center, which is open to all, offers a wide variety of opportunities for adults and teenagers to volunteer their time and energy to help provide the best possible care environment for patients and residents. Regardless of a person’s age or occupation, a caring manner and a helping hand can make a difference in the life of an older adult. Volunteer opportunities are available in several areas, including acute care, skilled nursing, assisted living, independent living, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, and several specialty clinics and therapies.
