Maralin Vanrenen

[ ACTING CV]
Maralin Vanrenen graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Performers Diploma in Speech and Drama in 1971.

In her final student year play, Maralin was nominated as BEST ACTRESS, in the professional category, for her portrayal of AMA in Lorca's DONA ROSITA.

QUOTE. "It is rare to see a performance so sustained in one so young."

Cape Times.

Maralin chose to travel abroad to further education in Theatre before embarking on her professional career.

She spent a Look and Learn year in London and Europe.

0n her return to South Africa Maralin worked at the very newly formed, SPACE theatre. This had just been started by the legendry YVONNE BRYCELAND, ATHOL FUGARD and BRIAN ASTBURY.

Here she played the female role, in the TERRANCE Mc NALLY two -hander SWEET EROS and the lead, Greta in T HE SPORT OF MY MAD MOTHER. Maralin receiving critical acclaim in both. She then moved to Johannesburg where she worked with the great BARNEY SIMON at The Arena Theatre in WOYSZEK , an experimental Zen play called 10 Bulls with the great movement expert Tessa Marwick and a very modern JOHN GUARE'S HOME-FIRES AND MUZEEKA.

It was at this time, that the ever strengthening SPACE THEATRE, decided to form their first permanent company of 8 actors, Maralin considered herself honoured to be amongst the chosen.

Maralin then dedicated the next 2 years to the SPACE performing day and night in just about everything.
Highlights included:
GERALDINE in WHAT THE BUTLER SAW.

JO-ANN in SLAG for which Maralin was nominated as Best Actress for a THREE LEAF AWARD.

THE NARRATOR in FUTZ

MADEMOISELLE  VICTOIRE in A LESSON IN BLOOD AND ROSES.

LISBETH in THREE'S COMPANY

ANNABELLA in the Jacobean Tragedy TIS PITY SHE'S A WHORE.

CARLA the Marilyn Monroe wanna be in KENNEDYS CHILDREN directed by the playwright ROBERT PATRICK.

Critics had this to say ... “Maralin Vanrenen as the aspiring Monroe Mark 2 is mesmerisngly marvellous - a performance of restraint, at times breath taking  control."

Cape Times.

After two magnificenlty varied and fruitful years, Maralin decided it was time to move on once more, so she headed back to Johannesburg.

Maralin worked with BARNEY SIMON once more, this time on PEOPLE T0O a work created by the cast and Director. She also made an impact on the local scene in the Broadway Musical, GYPSY.  And then for something completey different Maralin played all the women in an adaptation of SHAKESPARE’S HENRY 4 part 1.

Before Maralin left for another sojourn in London she returned to Cape Town to play ELIZABETH in SHAKESPEARE'S RICHARD THE 3RD .This production was chosen for the GRHAMSTOWN FESTIVAL followed by a Nation wide tour.

Maralin then spent 4 years in London. Her first engagement was in RED SQUARE AT NOON a National Film School project, in which she played the PARTY CHIEF, Directed by JOHN TCHALENKO.

Thereafter, Maralin spent a year performing with the satirical, theatrical , Rock group THE SADISTA SISTERS and with them she toured Europe and played  venues in London like THE ROUND HOUSE when they appered on the same bill with famed punk band Polly Styrene and the X Ray Specs, THE SPEAKEASY AND THE KINGSHEAD.

Maralin was cast in an episode of TYCOON a BBC TV Series Directed by JOHN SICHEL.

The EDINBRUGH FESTIVAL called next and Maralin joined CITY OF LONDON PRODUCTIONS, in a fringe offering called GROUCHO AT LARGE in which she played all the women, again. This production went on to Cambridge and Wales.

Visa restraints in England became just that and Maralin had to returned to South Africa.

Undaunted Maralin return to South Africa in 1980 where her career would start to take another direction. But before it did that, she played the Female Lead in two farces for Rex Garner. MELANIE SINCLAIR in UPROAR IN THE HOUSE and HILARY in THE BEDWINNER.

Maralin now turned her attention to Directing, writing and still starring in, FLASHING TRASH a satirical cabaret about women in the Music business. It had a massive success with sell out seasons in Cape Town and Johannesburg. TAKE A WIFF OF O.D. COLOGNE a satirical, crisis Cabaret followed. The crisis says it all, it dealt with all those everyday mundanities that become insanities in our lives. More packed houses. UP 'N ATOM a nuclear nightmare Rock show followed. It took Cape Town and Johannesburg by storm yet again.

Maralin then appeared in Canadian play AUTOMATIC PILOT playing the lead CHARLIE.
Maralin is superb as Charlie. In a way it's an almost perfect vehicle for her talents. She brings to the part a perfect balance of cynicism and sensitivity, making Charlie a lovably irritating person

Cape Argus.

Worth seeing for the one-liners alone….simply outstanding theatre excellently executed.

Cape Herald.

Vanrenen's sensitive and warm-hearted performance is a personal triumph.
