Making the Carmel Green Again

A Song – To the Camel Forest With Love
Ofir Yaakov, musician, artist and mountaineer, was hiking along the Israel Trail when he heard of the huge fire in the Carmel Forests. Because of his profound attachment to the forests, he felt unable to continue on his way, and returned home. When he realized the magnitude of the disaster, he wrote a song expressing his feelings, and set it to music.
Ofir is a nature enthusiast who teaches others about the importance of environmental conservation. For many years now he has been exploring and studying the Carmel region and passing on the knowledge he has acquired. To help with the rehabilitation of the forests, and in order “to repay this amazing place for all the goodness, wisdom and knowledge it has given me,” he has decided to present his song to KKL-JNF and donate the royalties in their entirety to KKL-JNF’s restoration work in the Carmel Forests.

The words of the song:

(Rhymed translation)

A blackened woodland weeping sap as fire devours it all

Living wood reduced to charcoal – yet an orphaned pine stands tall

Rain, oh source of life, come down and quench it all

In a shower of benediction, and cleanse the ash’s pall.

A lone bush, a blackened oak, needles pierce the heart

A trunk’s last ring, a burning root, smoke rising from the wheat

Rain, oh source of life, come down and quench it all

In a shower of benediction, and cleanse the ash’s pall.

Unrhymed translation

A blackened woodland, a tear of sap and the fire devours everything

An orphaned pine, scorched foliage, charcoal that breathed until yesterday
Rain – living water – come down and quench everything

Rain – the eternal blessing – come down and wash away yesterday.

A lone white-leaved savory (Micromeria fruticosa), a blackened oak, needles stuck in the heart

The final phloem, a burning root, smoke still rises from the wheat

Rain – living water – come down and quench everything

Rain – the eternal blessing – come down and wash away yesterday.
