Pre School committees:
We have started the process of forming local Child-Education Committee in each village where the pre-school is located. The committee will monitor the pre school there, i.e. whether the pre school starts on time and the quality of teacher’s interaction with children till 5 pm. The members will have dialogue with teacher and helper, and will help to resolve if there are any difficulties. The community meetings were held at Shelwak and Godsedara on 10th September 2008 and committees were formed. Milind and Dilip from MASUM requested the parents to talk to the children everyday at their home about their day at the school.
At Godsedara, the villagers decided to construct steps at a place where children have to cross a trench on a narrow plank on their way to school. The steps have since been built by the villagers there. The parents raised the issue that the government primary school teacher there beats the children and makes derogatory remarks about the tribal children. It was decided that the villagers should talk to the teachers and strongly express their concerns. Meetings scheduled at Limdari and Godsedara to form Pre School committees were cancelled because of heavy rain.

Classroom teaching methodology

Some photographs of the teachers training are being sent separately.

The fourth teachers training at Pune planned for five days included attending classroom sessions in an experimental school (Akshar Nandan). Ms. Yogita Devre and Ms. Suman Konkni, teachers from Mr. Ramesh Panase’s school conducted the sessions on the methodology. The training for second day onwards had to be cancelled as many of our teachers could not come for some reason or the other.
Training sessions every quarter have been very helpful in improving the pre school teaching and inputs on methodology and child psychology from resource persons could be seen in their handling of children.
Current Situation:

All the Pre Schools are running well. Gurherwadi teacher Ujjwala has been absent from the beginning of September due to her family problems. As a result we are now looking for a new teacher for the Gurhewadi Pre School.

Shelwak pre school teacher Archana Rokade resigned from her job to go for D.Ed (Diploma in education) training from October 2008. A new teacher will be appointed in her place. Limdari teacher Priyanka is on maternity leave (from 20th August to 19th November 2008) and for this period the Pre School there is being run by helper Mangal Dudhwade. We are actively searching for teachers to work in these remote villages and hope to complete the appointment very soon.
Evaluation of the students and photos:
The teachers are monitoring and recording the progress of every child. They are writing about how the child is doing and learning in the class. The pictures, handicraft made by each child in kept in his/her respective file. Some of the records made by the teachers in Marathi (scanned) are being sent separately. The teachers follow up the students admitted in the first standard by meeting the class teacher and asking about the attendance as well as the academic progress of the child every month.
How Asha funding has created the change?
Asha started support to Parner pre-schools from October 2008. About 100 children belonging to Bhil and Thakar tribes living in remote tribal hamlets have got access to education as a result of this effort. Asha support has helped in providing regular training inputs to local women to work as teachers. Scientific knowledge of the Pre School education methodology and child psychology has made it possible to provide quality education in the Parner Pre Schools. The educational aids made by the teachers and purchased from outside have helped the students to learn concepts of mathematics, science and language. Frequent monitoring visits to the Pre Schools helped to pep-up the enthusiasm of teachers and facilitated in constantly improving upon the quality of inputs with the children.
Future Plans:

In the next year, the teachers / helpers for Pre Schools at Gurhewadi and Shelwak will be appointed soon; training and monitoring will be strengthened. Monitoring of pre-school alumni will continue and supportive action will be organized if needed to help these children continue their education.
