LYMES – that we see in northeast US is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi spirochete (Bb) bacteria.

The infectious bacteria are spread by black legged ticks ( aka deer ticks), (primary route), fleas, flies, mites, and also through human breast milk, tears, urine and semen.

Common symptoms: Early – flu-like feelings of headache, stiff neck, fever, muscle aches and fatigue. 40-60% 0f light skinned patients notice unique bulls-eye rash days to weeks after the bite. On dark skinned people the rash resembles a bruise.

Disseminated infection ( to other organ systems) may occur.

Symptoms that may arise are many. The following is only a short list of possible symptoms:

GENERAL- profound fatigue, severe headache, fever, severe muscle aches /pain.

BRAIN- cranial nerve involvement, loss of reflexes, peripheral neuropathy, stiff neck, meningitis, facial paralysis, dizziness, fainting, sleep disorders, cognitive changes ( confusion, loss memory…), depression, decreased concentration, extreme agitation…

EYES- vision changes, blindness, retinal damage, conjunctivitis, “floaters”, inflammation…

SKIN- rash not at bite site- circular, oval, triangular, or long, thin ragged line., discoloration,

HEART- irregular beats, heart block, myocarditis, chest pain,..

JOINTS- intermittent or chronic pain, sometimes swelling, TMJ-like pain in jaw.

MUSCLE pain, cramps, inflammation, loss of tone.

Nausea,, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite.
TREATMENT- Allopathic -Antibiotics at first sign of rash, or when diagnosed. Tetracycline, doxycycline…or others.
POSSIBLE HERB PROTOCOLS:

These are the formulas I used for my daughters who contracted Lymes in 1993 and 2004 respectively.

A. Hart Brent, Health Calls 4287 Bayley Hazen Rd, West Danville, VT 05873 802-684-2570 email- hart@vtlink.net
Hart has developed three formulas for people presenting with Lymes symptoms and diagnosis. You can purchase these directly from her company.
Formula I- “Propolis Formula”- for treating primary infection disseminated into blood and lymph-

( Propolis, Echinacea, Red Root, Licorice root)

Formula II- “Lomatium Formula”- second stage- disseminated into organs

( Lomatium, Witch Hazel, Elderberry, Prickly Ash)

Formula III- “ Waltheria Formula”- third stage, more chronic- disseminated into bones and brain

( Waltheria, Artemisia annua, American Ginseng, Osha)

Dosage for each of the formulas above is 10-40 drops 2x/day. ( Depending on age, size and overall state of health.

If dealing with stage one- pulse formulas I and II…4 days on I, 3 days on II….etc…

If dealing with stage two or three- pulse with formulas II and III- 4 days on II, 3 days on III, etc……
Stay on formulas for 4-6 weeks and then re-evaluate.
Added herb support:

At the same time have the person use adaptogenic herbs, as well as herbs for the liver, nervous and immune systems. Hawthorne to support blood clearing and herbs specific to the person’s complaints/ particular organ/ system affected. Below are some herb possibilities. Rotate herbs for full support.

Adaptogenic herbs: Reishi, Eleutherococcus, Schisandra, Astragalus, Codonopsis, American Ginseng, Ashwagandha

Liver herbs- Milk thistle, Blessed thistle, Burdock, Calendula, Curcumin ( Turmeric)

C.David Dalton- Delta Gardens- has prepared a set of essences from the Teasel flower at various stages of blooming ( in patterned spirals/ bands). Having used these on himself and others over several years, David has found this system quite valuable for those dealing with Lymes. He does a specific training that many flower essence practitioners have learned and incorporated into their practices…Contact information: Delta Gardens 978-388-2143 for information on up-coming trainings and possible practitioner in your area.

I also use the homeopathic remedy Ledum palustre, dowsing for proper potency…30c-1M. 2-3 x/day for 7 days.

Care for the whole person, support emotional, mental and spiritual aspects, & address stress.
D. Stephen Buhner Protocol- from his book Healing Lyme ( Raven Press, Randolph, VT)

PLEASE REFER TO THIS BOOK BEFORE STARTING ON THIS PROTOCOL FOR MORE COMPLETE INFORMATION!!

CORE PROTOCOL:

1. Andrographis paniculata:

Science:

rapid excretion via kidneys ,anti-spirochetal , crosses blood brain barrier

protects heart muscle , anti-inflammatory , calming

potent modulating effect on mast cell and neutrophil activity:

turns off inappropriate mast-cell allergic reactions in tissue

enhances liver function

significant protective effects against inflammation-mediated neurodegeneration of brain, spinal chord and CSF

Dosage: 400 mg capsules standardized to 10% andrographolides

Start with 1 cap 4 times/day. Slowly increase to 3 caps 4 times/day. Stay on this dose till Lyme symptoms significantly decreased, then slowly decrease dose.

Stop during severe Herxheimer reactions. 1 year
2. Polygonum cuspidatum (Japanese Knotweed) , Resveratrol

Peer review literature/Science : Effective against:

Leptospirosis , Treponema denticola (spirochets in oral flora)

Bartonella (Buhner) , Many gram neg and gram pos bacteria

Anti-viral , Hepatitis B (and C?)
Dosage: Whole herb (Hu Zhang) standardized to 8% total resveratrols and 10 mg resveratrol.

Source Naturals 500 mg tablet. Use 3-4 caps 3-4 times/day. Work up slowly to this dose

  1. Cats Claw ( Uncaria tomentosa) bark-

Immune potentiator and stimulant, anti-inflammatory, analgesic,.

Specific for arthritis and muscle pain in Lymes. For CNS enhancement, cognitive impairments. Raises NK cells and white blood cell counts ( CD57)

Dosage: one to four 500 mg capsules 3-4x/daily for 8-12 months. Begin at lowest dosage and increase incrementally every 7 days, ie. after seven days take 2 capsules 3x/day, then 3 caps 3x/day…dosage can be slowly decreased as L. symptoms subside. (do not take if taking stomach acid blockers as they may inhibit conversion of herb into its active form in stomach.)
All three herbs have potential side effects- please see notes in Buhner’s book.
Other herbs to consider:
Astragalus root- immune potentiator and modulator. Increases interferon-gamma and interleukin-2 levels. specific for immune atrophy and enhances function in thymus and spleen.

Take if living in an endemic area, or with low immune function, chronic fatigue, night sweats, Lyme carditis ( angina, palpitations, shortness of breath, erlichia co-infection, anti-inflammatory.

Smilax glabra or similar species- lessens Herxheimer reactions from die-ff spirochetes ( and Lyme co-infectious organisms) binds endotoxins in bloodstream, is anti-spirochetal, anti-inflammatory for arthritic symptoms, neuroprotector for brain function, enhances cognitive function, reduces skin responses to Lyme disease, lessens fatigue, gives pain relief, protects liver.
Stephania tetrandra root- for neural and arthritic inflammations, edema, as immunomodulator,

myalgias, endothelial protection, Bell’s palsy, ocular involvement during Lyme infection, Lyme arthritis, late stage Lyme infections of nervous system, joints, and skin.

Cryptolepsis sanguinolenta- antiparasitic, antimalarial, antibacterial, antifungal. A very strong herb- helpful in treating Lyme co-infections such as Babesia, erlichia and bartonella.
*** Also, increase Magnesium and B12 for pain, muscle spasms, twitches, skin tingling/crawling.
