Mayor's office race relations workshop for grade school students held at Christ the King Cathedral's meeting room, Lexington, Ky., Summer 1996. Group published a July 4th newspaper celebrating diversity in the community.
Advisory Board member for K.I.T.E. (Kids, Ideas, Talent in Education), a non-profit organization founded by Community Newsjournal Publisher Don Cordray and designed to help minority high school students in Lexington, Ky., who are interested in newspaper careers. 1995-97.
Lexington Herald-Leader editorial board panelist for a discussion on race relations in Lexington, Ky. Other panelists included a City Council member, community activists and a high school student. Comments published as cover story for Sunday editorial page, June 1996.

FIRST First Amendment Celebrations, principal coordinator

AMENDMENT of series of events, from keynote addresses and panel discussions to a high school essay contest. Sponsored by the Scripps Howard Foundation and hosted by the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky. Fall 1997-2004.

Member, Citizens Symposium, a think tank to organize a forum to discuss community issues called Speak Out, sponsored by the mayor's office in Lexington, Ky. Created "Community Bonds" game to assess contributions to civic entrepreneurship. 1996.
Member, Convening Coalition for the Central Kentucky Community Leadership Program, funded by a subsidiary of the Pew Charitable Trusts. Lexington, Ky., was selected as one of only 10 cities in the nation to participate in a program to

reinvigorate democracy and improve the quality of community decision making. 1997.


INDUSTRY Member, Human Resources Committee, American Society of Newspaper Editors, 1995 to present. One of the founding members of a three-year initiative to put the focus on copy editors. Organized

national conferences, provided support for a new American Copy

Editors Society (ACES), wrote and edited reports for the 1996 and 1997

annual ASNE conventions and served as a panelist for the 1996

convention.
Member, Committee on Small Newspapers, American Society of Newspaper Editors, 1991 to 1994. One of the founding members and the only one from a university. Produced video and report on the Maestro Concept for the 1993 ASNE convention.

Contributor, Future of Newspapers Committee, American Society of Newspaper Editors, 1990. Wrote essay on future of editing for committee's April 1991 special edition of the ASNE Bulletin on the future of newspapers.
Advisory board member for the Society of Professional Copy Editors, 1992. Precursor to the American Copy Editors Society, founded in 1997.
Education Committee member for the Society of Newspaper Design, 1991-1997.
News editor-adviser to the ANPA News, a daily newspaper produced by Medill School of Journalism students covering the American Newspaper Publishers Association convention in Chicago in 1989.
RELIGIOUS Adviser to the Archdiocese of Louisville's newspaper, PUBLICATIONS The Record, founded in 1878 and currently distributed to 65,000 households in 24 counties. April 1997.

HIGH SCHOOLS Member of Kentucky Educational Television planning group for programs to help high school media advisers. Summer 1996.
Advisory board member for new Kentucky High School Journalism Association, based at the Kentucky Press Association. 1997. Had organized meeting to try to resurrect the Kentucky High School Press Association. Included representatives of the Kentucky Press Association, Kentucky Educational Television, Toyota (KPA board member), Herald-Leader, school faculty and staff. July 1996.
Assisted Bourbon County High School, Paris, Ky., on use of new television studio and broadcast equipment. Joined by

broadcast faculty member and UKTV representative. August 1996.

SERVICE


DIVERSITY Faculty adviser to student chapter of National Association of Black Journalists at the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky. 1994-96. Helped four students attend the Inland Minority Job Fair in Chicago in October 1995 and arranged for them to tour the Chicago Tribune and NBC television studios.

College representative to the "Come See for Yourself" orientation sessions for minority high school students at the University of Kentucky. Fall 1995.


Member, College Affirmative Action Committee; worked to refine language in new policy at the University of Kentucky. Spring 1996.
STUDENT GROUPS Helped students establish the first student chapter of the Society of Newspaper Design at the University of Kentucky. Fall 1996.
Initiated a mentoring program linking student representatives in the Student Advisory Council to members of the Board of Visitors for the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky. Fall 1996.


MEDIA CENTER Co-chair, chancellor's task force on the Media Center for the Future at the University of Kentucky. January-March 1996.

FELLOWSHIPS Fellow, Freedom Forum Leadership Workshop, Media Studies Center, New York City. Weeklong seminar designed for administrators of journalism and mass communications programs. June 1995.
Fellow, Freedom Forum Workshop at Indiana University. Participated in a weeklong workshop in June 1992 on journalism education designed for professionals entering university life.
Fellow, Poynter Institute for Media Studies. Participated in a weeklong session in November 1990 on the impact of “Eyes on the News,” a newspaper color study, on the industry and journalism education.
JUDGING Judge for Scripps Howard Foundation's national literacy program competition among newspapers and radio and television stations, February 1997 at the foundation's offices in Cincinnati.
Judge for Best of Gannett annual competition at corporate headquarters in Arlington, Va., September 1992. The contest involved medium-sized, or over 40,000-circulation, newspapers.
Judge of the Inland Press Association’s Front Page Contest 1990-1993, sponsored by the Medill School of Journalism. Publications Committee member for the association, 1992.
Judge of photo competition for the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives in 1987.
TEACHING Named one of the 10 best professors at Northwestern University

AWARDS by a student newspaper in 1989. Nominated by Medill’s dean for an Excellence in Teaching Award from the university, and named three

times by a student government organization to the Faculty Honor Roll in



1988,1989 and 1990.
Honored by Sigma Kappa as a "Great Educator" at the University of Kentucky, 1996-97; received Provost’s Award for

Outstanding Teaching/Tenured Faculty, 2003.


HONOR SOCIETY Member of Kappa Tau Alpha, the national journalism honor society. Other college honors included three nominations for William Randolph Hearst Foundation awards for general news reporting and feature

writing; and a 1980 scholarship from the Society of Professional



Journalists’ Buffalo chapter for a professional returning to college.
ACEJMC Accreditation team member for a visit to the University of Nebraska’s journalism program in February 1992 by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
