1980-81

The Certified Professional Secretary rating in 1980 was received by 102 within the Division with 31 being members.
Another record was set, the Division had 47 chapters. One chapter, Big Spring chartered in 1957, relinquished its charter, and we gained five new chapters: Greenspoint Area (Houston); Northwest (Houston); Tall City (Midland); Richardson; and Big Country (Abilene).
Our membership increased to 2,502 (including 22 Chapter at Large members).
Two new FSA Chapters were installed: Grayson County College Chapter, FSA, by Texoma Chapter and Touch of Uniqueness Chapter, FSA, by Magic Valley Chapter (Edinburg/McAllen). The 1981 T-L Division Miss FSA and Scholarship winner was Connie Holloway of Technical Office Training Chapter, FSA, sponsored by Palo Duro Chapter.
Division member serving on International Level was Doris R. Towns CPS, Houston Chapter, Southwest District Director.
A new International Code of Ethics was adopted. Effective February 12, 1981, PROFESSIONAL SECRETARIES INTERNATIONAL became the new name by mail referendum to all units, 477 votes in favor, 273 against, 17 illegal, for a total of 767 voting out of a possible 862.
The 29th Annual Meeting was held May 15-17, 1981, in Amarillo with Amarillo Chapter as host. The theme of the meeting was "Branding the Way." Total registration was 191.
Magic Valley Chapter (Edinburg/McAllen) was awarded the CPS trophy; the Traveling Trophy for the most outstanding bulletin was awarded to Garland Chapter for the Bulletin Board.
Dues were increased to $5.00, effective December 1, 1981; also adopted was the Office of President-Elect, effective with the 1981-82 election.
It was with deep regret that we accepted the resignation of our Parliamentarian, Mrs. Floonie Mae Larimer, PRP, who had served in this capacity for twenty-five Annual Meetings, assisting every Board of Directors. In 1969, the Division conferred Honorary Membership on Mrs. Larimer.
Patricia Hutcherson CPS, Anacacho Chapter (San Antonio) was selected Division Secretary of the Year.

President Bridgman's theme for the year was "Working Together for Success, Progress, and Growth."
On April 30, 1982, the Division membership was 2,320. There were 46 chapters with two chapters being installed: Southwest Houston (Houston); and Cedar Hills (Kerrville) making a total of 48 chapters.
There were 21 FSA Chapters. Annette Gonzales, MacArthur High School FSA, sponsored by Golden Triangle Chapter (Arlington/Irving/Grand Prairie) was chosen T-L Division Scholarship winner and Southwest District FSA Scholarship Winner.
With the Certified Professional Secretary notification to 91, 28 of these being PSI members, the Division still had the largest number at 1,823.
Anacacho Chapter (San Antonio) secured the first Contributing Member in the Division.
NOLA Chapter (New Orleans) hosted the International Convention.
Division members serving on the International Level were: Doris R. Towns CPS, Houston Chapter, 2nd Vice President; Holly Troth CPS, Amarillo Chapter, Nomination Committee; Betty Wooden CPS, Big D Chapter, Dallas, as the Southwest District Representative to the Institute for Certifying Secretaries.
Nathan Winters was designated Honorary Member of Magic Valley Chapter (Edinburg/McAllen).
The 30th Annual Meeting was held at the Sheraton Acadiana in Lafayette, Azalea Chapter as host. There were 243 registrants. The theme as "Joie de Vivre." There was a dues increase of $1.00 from $5.00 to $6.00 effective 5/1/83.
Most Outstanding Bulletin Award went to Golden Triangle Chapter (Arlington/Irving/Grand Prairie) for STARLITES.
Virginia Crouch CPS, Big D Chapter (Dallas), was selected Secretary of the Year.

1982-83

There were 43 chapters. Tall City Chapter relinquished its charter.

Membership as of April 1983, was 2,261. Hazel Higgins CPS, Houston Chapter won Outstanding Member for bringing in 13 members; Big Country Chapter (Abilene) won Winning Chapter for 100% increase in chapter membership for the year; the Grand Prize Winner was Dora Moody, Trinity Chapter (Fort Worth); and a Special Award was presented to Gateway Chapter (Laredo) for 100% membership retention.


The total CPS rating recipients was 1,921 with 98 for the year and 39 being members.
CPS Adjunct Societies were formed in the west, south/southeast and north/northeast areas of Texas and the State of Louisiana.
FSA Chapters were installed by Capital Chapter (Austin) and two by Houston Chapter.
THE TEXANA was mailed to Chapter Presidents only. A new Tips Handbook was published by the Retirement Centers Committee.
The 31st Annual Meeting was held in Fort Worth at the Americana Hotel with Trinity Chapter as host. There were 322 in attendance. The number of Division Officers was changed from six to five.
Awards were given to Azalea Chapter (Lafayette), CPS Achievement Award, Ouachita Valley Chapter (Monroe); Bulletin Award, Houston Chapter for Strikeovers; and Newsletter Award to Northwest Chapter (Houston), for Northwest Passages.
Bonnie Goodman CPS, Ouachita Valley (Monroe), was selected Division Secretary of the Year and represented the Southwest District at the International Secretary of the Year event.

The Division is the largest in the Association with 42 chapters, 2,140 members.
New FSA Chapters installed were: Delgado Community College by NOLA Chapter (New Orleans); MacArthur High School by Golden Triangle Chapter (Arlington/Irving/Grand Prairie); Dolores Kilchenstien by Caprock Chapter (Lubbock); and Caddo Career Center by Pelican Chapter (Shreveport). The Teurlings FSA Chapter sponsored by Azalea Chapter (Lafayette) was the Division representative in the International FSA Chapter Achievement Award.
Division members serving on International Level were: Paulyne Wern CPS, Galveston County Chapter, Rules and Bylaws Committee; and Betty Wooden CPS, Big D Chapter, Dallas, the Institute for Certifying Secretaries.
The 32nd Annual Meeting was held in Houston hosted by Houston Chapter.
Kay Cannon CPS, North Dallas Chapter, was selected Division Secretary of the Year.

In October 1984, Reba Strickland CPS resigned and Anetia Smith, Magic Valley Chapter (McAllen) was appointed Treasurer.
The membership on June 30, 1985, was 2,016.
Dickinson Chapter FSA was installed by Anacacho Chapter (San Antonio) totaling of 12 FSA Chapters in the Division.
There were 102 CPS recipients for a Division total of 2,126.
Leadership Conferences were held throughout the Division.
Brainstorming sessions on increasing Division effectiveness were held throughout the Division. A three year Task Force was appointed to review the current structure and recommend changes that would enhance the Division.
Golden Triangle Chapter (Arlington/Irving/Grand Prairie) hosted the Southwest District Regional Conference.
Division members serving on the International Level were: Paulyne Wern CPS, Galveston County Chapter, Rules & Bylaws Committee; and Betty Wooden CPS, Big D Chapter, Dallas, the Southwest District Representative to the Institute for Certifying Secretaries.
The 33rd Annual Meeting was held in El Paso hosted by the Sun and Sage Chapter. The theme was "Metamorphosis."

President Stanley's theme for the year was "Strength from Within."
In October 1985, Evelyn Calhoun resigned and Candy Daniels moved to the office of President-Elect. Grace Braziel CPS, San Angelo Chapter, was appointed to fill the vacancy of Vice President.
The total membership on April 30, 1986, was 1,928. There were 38 chapters after losing Corsicana Chapter. FSA Chapters totaled 13. There were 130 new CPS recipients making a Division total of 2,256. Seven Leadership Conferences were held throughout the Division. Two Division Workshops were held.
The Division and its chapters were selected to be participants in the Pilot Project on Direct Billing. All but two of the chapters participated in the project and dues notices were mailed directly to members by International. The project was an overwhelming success.

The 34th Annual Meeting was hosted by Galveston County Chapter in Galveston. The total registration was 271. The theme was "Sail to Success."
Membership awards were presented to: LaPine Chapter (Alexandria) for 10-30 members, with a 75% increase; Capital Chapter (Austin) for 31-50 members with an 83% increase; Azalea Chapter (Lafayette) for 51-75 members with a 32% increase; and Big D Chapter (Dallas) for 100+ members for a 44% increase. Dixie Gem (Ruston) and Gateway (Laredo) Chapters received a special award for 100% membership retention.
Reba Strickland CPS, Houston Chapter, was selected Division Secretary of the Year and selected as the Secretary of the Year for the Southwest District. At the International Convention in Philadelphia she was selected International Secretary of the Year.

1986-87

President Braziel's theme for the year was "Find Renaissance."
A new Division Procedures Manual was developed and distributed to each chapter. Leadership Conferences were held in June. There were five Division Workshops.
At the International Convention, Philadelphia, PA, Division Representative Grace Braziel CPS proposed the amendment to the Revision of the International Bylaws to include Direct Billing, which passed.
Gateway Chapter (Laredo) was awarded the International President's Award at the Southwest District Conference for the greatest percentage net increase in membership in the category of 12-30 members for the period of April 1, 1985 through March 31, 1986.
There were 297 new CPS recipients from May and November, 1986, exams for a Division total of 2,553. This was the first time the examination was given twice a year.
Mary Ann Ayers, Capital Chapter (Austin), was one of the recipients of a $2,000 Avery Scholarship. This was the second consecutive year that a member of Capital Chapter received an Avery Scholarship.
A video conference (through ARCOvision and sponsored by ARCO Oil and Gas) between Big D Chapter in Dallas and Billikin Chapter in Anchorage, Alaska, allowed these two chapters to discuss their common interest in the CPS rating, member retention, image, and the business community.
Membership as of May 31, 1987, was 1,863.
There were 39 chapters in the Division with the installation of the Clear Lake/NASA Area and Parker County Chapters.
The Challenger Chapter FSA sponsored by Southwest Houston Chapter, totaling of 10 FSA Chapters.
Division members serving at International Level were: Doris R. Towns CPS, Northwest Chapter (Houston), Trustee, Retirement Centers Trust; Paulyne D. Wern CPS, Galveston County Chapter, Committee on Nominations; Prebble C. The 35th Annual Meeting was hosted by Baton Rouge Chapter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The theme was "Lagniappe." Total registration was 239 members.
Division Membership Awards (June 1, 1986 - April 15, 1987) were given to the following chapters: Greatest Percentage Increase in Category of 10-30 Members - Dixie Gem (Ruston) and Greenspoint Area (Houston) with 50% increase; Greatest Percentage Increase in Category of 31-50 Members - Baton Rouge with 32.6% increase; Greatest Percentage Increase in Category 51-75 Members - Capital (Austin) with 46.7% increase (second consecutive year to win this category; Greatest Percentage Increase in Category of 100+ Members - Big D Chapter (Dallas) with 18.1% increase.

1987-88

President Daniels' theme for the year was "Capitalize on our Assets."
The membership as of May 31, 1988, was 1,968.
The year began and ended with 39 chapters. Brazoria County and Gateway (Laredo) Chapters relinquished their charters. East Texas Chapter (Longview), sponsored by Pelican Chapter (Shreveport) and Panhandle Chapter (Borger), sponsored by Amarillo Chapter, were installed.
In January, 1988, Sun and Sage Chapter in El Paso made history by sponsoring a chapter in the New Mexico Division, Mesilla Valley Chapter in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Eight Leadership Conferences were held in June 1987.
Division members serving on International Level were: Doris R. Towns CPS, Northwest Chapter, Chairman of Retirement Center Trust and Grace Braziel CPS, San Angelo Chapter, Strategic Planning Committee.
First International Convention where chapters not represented by a delegate were allowed to vote by proxy in the election of International officers and trustees.
Two Division Chapters received membership awards for greatest percentage increase in members during the period from April 1, 1987 to march 31, 1988: for a chapter with 31-50 members, NOLA Chapter, New Orleans, LA; and for a chapter with 51-75 members, Sun and Sage Chapter, El Paso, TX.
The first entire Southwest District Conference was held in Houston, Texas, in October 1987, hosted by Southwest Houston Chapter.
Division Workshops were held.
There were 270 CPS recipients in the Division totaling 2,823.
International held a "Commitment--Rekindle the Spirit" membership blitz from September 1 through October 31, 1987. Ninety applications from the Division were processed. Southwest Houston Chapter won the International Blitz in the category of more than 50 members. The prize was a seminar leader provided free for the chapter's annual seminar.
The Division sponsored a "Capitalize on Membership" drive from January 1 through March 31, 1988, resulting in 112 membership applications.
In March 1988, Big D Chapter (Dallas) hosted the Open House during the 1988 FSA/CSI Student Conference held in Dallas, TX. Big D Chapter solicited corporate contributions resulting in a profit being sent to the Institute for Educating Secretaries.
A letter written to Xerox Corporation by Capital Chapter President Mary Ann Ayers CPS, thanking them for publishing a letter sent by Capital members Angel Skinner and thus "promoting self-esteem through creative business involvement at the clerical level," set into motion a series of events that led to interviews with International President Fran Barr and Northwest District Director Rob Metcalf CPS being featured on the covers of the Xerox publication DIALOGUE and a visit to Headquarters by Xerox representatives to discuss future cooperative efforts. The interview with President Barr appeared on the January cover of DIALOGUE and, in a six week period, prompted 800+ inquiries to Headquarters for additional information about the association.
The 36th Annual Meeting was held May 20-22, 1988, at the Marriott at the Capitol in Austin, Texas, hosted by Capital Chapter. The theme was "A Capital Idea!" Total registration was 257 members from 38 chapters.
Division Membership Awards for the greatest percentage increase in a chapter with 10-30 members - Denton Chapter, Denton, Texas (63.6%); For the greatest percentage increase in a chapter with 31-50 members - NOLA Chapter, New Orleans, LA (88.6%); For the greatest percentage increase in a chapter with 51-75 members - Azalea Chapter, Lafayette, LA (29.4%) and Southwest Houston Chapter, Houston, TX (29.4%); For the greatest percentage increase in a chapter with 100+ members - Big D Chapter, Dallas, TX (28.2%); and Texoma Chapter, Sherman/Denison, TX, received a special award for 100% retention of members.
Genevieve Dupré CPS, Beaumont Chapter, was selected the 1988 Division Secretary of the Year.

1988-89

President Smith's theme for the year was "Key to Success."
The membership as of May 31, 1989 was 2,081, an increase over the previous year of 27.3%.
Five new chapters were chartered during the year, increasing the number of chapters to 44. This was a net increase of four, due to Dixie Gem Chapter (Ruston, LA) relinquishing its charter at the close of the year. The new chapters were West Houston Chapter, Houston, TX; Bluebonnet Chapter, Williamson County, TX; Tumbleweed Chapter, Odessa, TX; Las Colinas Chapter, Las Colinas/Irving, TX; and Medical Center Chapter, Houston, TX.
Six Leadership Conferences were held in June 1988.
Division members serving at the International Level were: Doris R. Towns CPS, Northwest Chapter, Chairman of the Retirement Centers Trust; Grace Braziel CPS, San Angelo Chapter, Strategic Planning Committee; and Candy Daniels CPS, Dixie Gem Chapter, Chairman, Committee on Nominations.
At International Convention in Kansas City, MO, four T-L Division Officers participated in post-convention seminar "Striving for Excellence."
Southwest District Conference was held in October, 1988 in Anaheim, CA, attended by approximately 20 members from 14 T-L Division chapters. A workshop, "What’s in a Name?" was held during the Conference. As follow-up, the Division prepared and mailed a survey on the subject to chapter presidents and members-at-large. A comprehensive report on the results was subsequently issued by the Division Board.
There were 200 CPS recipients in the Division totaling 3,070.
During the International Membership Blitz from September through November, 1988, 178 new members were gained, and 73 added during the Division Membership Drive from January through March, 1989.
Correspondence from Division was instrumental in preventing the consolidation of the student programs of PSI® and Future Business Leaders of America. This action was taken based on indications to the Board that such a merger was contrary to the wishes of the membership majority.
Winner of the first T-L Division Scholarship ($200) was awarded to JoAnne Sauceman, CSI member from Jimmy Swaggart Bible College in Baton Rouge, LA.
The 37th Annual Meeting was held May 18-21, 1989, at the Holiday Inn-Country Villa in Midland, Texas, hosted by Permian Chapter. The theme was "Finding New Horizons!" Total registration was 198 members from 35 chapters.

Virginia (Ginny) Anderson, Trinity Chapter, was selected the 1989 Division Secretary of the Year.


"Key to Success" essay awards were presented to Baton Rouge; Capital; Greenspoint Area; San Angelo; Southwest Houston; Sun and Sage; and West Houston Chapters. Individual membership drive winners were:

President Harrison's theme for the year was "Energize, Enrich, Evolve." Membership at June, 1989 was 1,774 and at May 31, 1990 was 2,135, a 20.3% increase.
Two chapters were chartered during the year: (1) August 22, 1989, Greenville Chapter, a corporate chapter at the Greenville Division of E-Systems in Greenville, Texas and (2) April 19,1990, Exxon Chapter, a corporate chapter at Exxon Company USA in Houston, Texas. Ouachita Valley Chapter in Monroe/West Monroe, Louisiana, relinquished its charter on May 31. As of May 31, 1990, there were 45 chapters which included members at large.
Division members serving at the International Level were: (1) Doris R. Towns CPS, Northwest Chapter, Chairman of the Retirement Centers Trust and (2) Grace Braziel CPS, San Angelo Chapter, Strategic Planning Committee.
The Southwest District Conference was hosted by Baton Rouge Chapter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The conference was held in conjunction with the Division Officers Leadership Conference and the International Board Retreat. The Division Officers Leadership Conference, a strategic planning meeting, was the first of its kind. Items discussed at the Division Officers Leadership Conference were the mission statement, issues facing our association, and methods to implement future strategies.
There were 225 CPS recipients from the May 1989 and November 1989 examinations. The 1989 CPS Seminar, "Professional Development: Technological Transition to the Office of the 1990s" was held in Irvine, California.
For the first time, a $100 contribution was made to the Retirement Centers Trust in honor of Doris Towns CPS, International Trustee; a $100 contribution was made to the Research and Education Foundation in memory of Rose Tettenhorst CPS, a Southwest District member and a former International officer; and a $100 contribution was made to the Building Fund. Houston Chapter contributed $1,000 to the Retirement Centers Trust.
An International Membership Blitz from September through November 1989 was held and a Division Membership Drive was held from January through March 1990.
The winner of the second Division scholarship of $300 was awarded to Brenda K. Adams from Grayson County College in Denison, Texas.
Streamlining of tasks was implemented during the year such as membership statistics accountability, chapter annual report form, and the change in the accounting method from an accrual basis to a cash basis.
The 38th Annual Meeting was held May 17-20, 1990 at the Holiday Inn-Emerald Beach in Corpus Christi, Texas, hosted by the Coastal Bend Chapter. The theme was "Waves of Change." Total registration was 288 from 41 chapters.
The "E Exponent Exposure" essay winners were presented certificates to the following chapters: Beaumont, Capital, Greenspoint Area, Houston, Las Colinas, Medical Center, Southwest Houston, and West Houston. Individual winners of the Division Membership Drive were: First--Rita Backus CPS, Las Colinas Chapter; Second--Alice Dowie CPS, Capital Chapter; and Third (Tie)--Paula Metcalf of East Texas Chapter, Patsy Stevens of Trinity Chapter, and Denise Rosenblum of West Houston.

The theme selected by President Joplin for 1990-91 was "Spread Your Wings." Membership on June 1, 1990, was 1,864. There was an eight percent increase during the year, with membership increasing to 2,020.
Three chapters were chartered during the year: (1) July 10, 1990, Twice as Nice Chapter, Texarkana, Texas; (2) March 11, 1991, Montgomery County Chapter, Conroe, Texas; and (3) April 11, 1991, Texaco Technology Chapter, a corporate chapter at Texaco in Houston, Texas. Three chapters relinquished their charters as of May 31, 1991: Bluebonnet Chapter, Williamson County, Texas; East Texas Chapter, Longview, Texas; and San Angelo Chapter, San Angelo, Texas. As of May 31, 1991, there were 45 chapters which included members at large.
Division members serving at the International Level were: (1) Candy Daniels CPS, Member at Large, Building Fund Committee; (2) Elaine H. The Southwest District Conference was hosted by Albuquerque Chapter in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There were 260 CPS recipients from the May and November 1990 examinations. The 1990 CPS Seminar, "Executive Assistant 2000" was held in Savannah, Georgia.
A $100 contribution was made to the Retirement Centers Trust in memory of Flonnie Mae Larimer PRP; a $100 contribution was made to the Research and Education Foundation in memory of Prebble Luthultz CPS, PRP; and $100 to the PSI Building Fund on behalf of the entire Texas-Louisiana Division membership.
Certificates were awarded to five chapters who gained the greatest percentage net increase in membership from June 1, 1990, through April 30, 1991, in various categories. (1) Caprock Chapter had the greatest percentage net increase in the category of five to fifteen members; (2) Temple Chapter with the greatest percentage in the category of sixteen to thirty-five members; (3) Greenspoint Area Chapter with the greatest percentage net increase in the category of thirty-six to fifty-five members; (4) NOLA Chapter with the greatest percentage net increase in the category of fifty-six to eighty-five members; and (5) Trinity Chapter with the greatest net increase in the category of eighty-six members and above.
The first Humanitarian Award, designed to honor a member who had contributed to the goals and objectives of the association and profession and/or active in community affairs, was given posthumously to Prebble Luthultz CPS, PRP, Northwest Chapter. Special recognition was made of Dora Moody, Trinity Chapter, and Alice Dowie CPS, CAM of Capital Chapter.
Christy Ann Lefleur of the University of Southwestern Louisiana was awarded the $500 Division Scholarship.
During 1990-91, the responsibilities of the Division Secretary of the Year were expanded. At a chapter's request, the SOTY might make a chapter visit in place of a Division Officer, with travel expenses being reimbursed by the Division. This was done to better utilize the qualities of the current SOTY.
The 39th Annual Meeting was held in May 17-19, 1991, at the Harvey Hotel in Amarillo, Texas, hosted by the Amarillo Chapter. The theme was "Rainbow of Dreams." Total registration was 157 from 38 chapters including members at large.

The Southwest District Conference was hosted by the Lindbergh Chapter in St. Louis, Missouri, February 28-March 1, 1992.
There were 294 CPS recipients from Texas and Louisiana for the May and November 1991 examinations.
The CSI/FSA Student Leadership Conference was held March 5-8, 1992 in San Antonio, Texas.
A $200 contribution was made to the Retirement Centers Trust in memory of Melba Ernst CPS; a $200 contribution was made to the Research and Education Foundation in memory of Naomi Fletcher; and $200 to the PSI Building Fund on behalf of the entire Texas-Louisiana Division membership.

Total registration was 228 from 36 chapters including members at large. The Division Bylaws and Standing Rules were amended in 1991 to allow chapters to send a proxy vote for voting for officer candidates and Annual Meeting site bids. Eight chapters utilized the proxy voting.

President Dupré's theme for the 1992-93 year was "Set Sail For a New Horizon." Membership on June 1, 1992 was 1,822 and on April 30, 1993 membership totaled 1,917 for an overall increase of nine percent.
Two chapters relinquished their charters this year - Magic Valley and Panhandle. As of May 31, 1993, there were 42 chapters including the members at large.
Division members serving at the International Level were: Elaine H. Harrison CPS, Big D Chapter, Southwest District Director and Shirley Sheff CPS, Southwest Houston Chapter, PSI Focus Group of the Institute for Certification.
The 1992 International Convention was held in July in Columbus, Ohio. There were 86 division members present representing 31 chapters. Four chapters sent proxies authorizing the Division President to cast votes on behalf of their chapters.
The Southwest District Conference was held in Tulsa, Oklahoma in February 26-28, 1993. The theme was "PSI Paves the Way to Professionalism." Elaine H. Harrison CPS presided as Southwest District Director. A total of 63 members were in attendance representing 24 of our chapters. President Dupré presented a preconference workshop on the topic of membership.
The CSI/FSA Student Conference was held in March in New Orleans, Louisiana. Secretary Brown attended on behalf of the Division.
There were 273 secretaries from Texas and Louisiana who earned the CPS designation in the 1992 May and November exams.
The Division Board submitted two amendments to the International Bylaws and Standing Rules on behalf of the Division. An amendment was submitted to change the name of the association to the International Association of Office Professionals. Another amendment was submitted to change the definition of a "secretary" to the definition of an "office professional." (NOTE: Both amendments failed to pass at the International Convention.)
On behalf of the Texas-Louisiana Division, a $200 contribution was made to the Retirement Centers Trust; a $200 contribution was made to the Research and Education Foundation; and a $200 contribution was made to the PSI Building Fund.
Certificates were awarded to five chapters who gained the greatest percentage net increase in membership from June 1, 1992 through April 30, 1993 in the following categories: (1) Beaumont Chapter for the greatest percentage net increase in the category of five to fifteen members with an overall increase of 33%; (2) Sundial Chapter with the greatest percentage net increase in the category of sixteen to thirty-five members with an overall increase of 57%; (3) Greenspoint Area Chapter for the greatest percentage net increase in the category of thirty-six to fifty-five members with an overall increase of 15%; (4) North Dallas Chapter with the greatest percentage net increase in the category of fifty-six to eighty-five members with an overall increase of 17% AND Sun and Sage for the same category with an overall increase of 17%; and (5) Houston Chapter with the greatest percentage net increase in the category of eighty-six members and above with an overall increase of 14%.
The first ever Division Member of the Year Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to the goals and objectives of the association and the profession was awarded to Cindy Hammer CPS, Greenspoint Area Chapter.
The recipient of the $500 Texas-Louisiana Division Scholarship was Theresa Bailey, a sophomore at Kingwood College in Kingwood, Texas.
The Division Board voted to continue utilizing the Division Secretary of the Year in the chapter visits program. At the request of the chapters, 1992-93 Division SOTY, Kathie J. Hardcastle CPS, made seven presentations to our division chapters.
The 41st Annual Meeting was held May 27-30, 1993 at the Doubletree Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana and was hosted by the NOLA Chapter. The theme was "Unmask Your Potential and All That Jazz." Total registration was 209 members representing 35 chapters including members at large. Two official proxies were received enabling the Division President to cast votes for these chapters for officer candidates.
Janet Hayes CPS, Big D Chapter, was selected the 1993 Division Secretary of the Year. She was later selected to represent the Southwest District at the International Convention in Calgary, Alberta Canada.

President Smith’s theme was “Soaring to New Heights.” Membership in the Division as of April 30, 1994 was 1,887 and represented a 1.6% decrease.
Heart of Texas Chapter, Waco, Texas, with 13 charter members, and Dallas Central Chapter, Dallas, Texas, with 22 charter members, were installed in May 1994. This brought in an additional 35 new members and the number of chapters to 43.
The only division member serving on the International level was Candy W. Daniels CPS, 1993-94 Southwest District Director.
There were four Leadership Conferences held throughout the Division during the year.

President Smith represented the Division as delegate and President-elect Bozeman served as alternate at the International convention in Calgary, Canada. The Division’s proposed name change amendment did not pass.


There were 245 CPS recipients in the Division.
The Southwest District Conference was held in February 1994 in conjunction with the Division Officers Leadership Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. President Smith represented the Division at the Southwest District Conference and all other division officers attended the Division Officers Leadership Conference.

The Southwest District conference, hosted by Capital Chapter, in Austin, Texas was held February 23-26, 1995. Candy W. Daniels CPS presided as Southwest District Director. A total of 120 division members representing 29 chapters were in attendance.
A total of 225 secretaries from Texas and Louisiana earned the CPS designation in the 1994 May and November exams.

The 1995 International convention was held July 23-26, 1995 in Seattle, Washington. There were 83 division members representing 30 chapters.
Southwest District conference was not held during the 1995-96 year due to the date being changed to October. Two board members attended other district conferences: Maggie Rios CPS - Southeast District conference in Puerto Rico and Marti Long - Northeast District conference in Long Island, New York.
There were 183 secretaries from Texas and Louisiana who earned the CPS designation in the 1995 May and November examinations.
On behalf of the Texas-Louisiana Division, a $200 contribution was made to the Research and Education Foundation in memory of all Omega members; a $200 contribution was made to the Retirement Centers Trust; a $200 contribution was made to the PSI Building Fund; and two pavers were purchased at the Retirement Center in honor of Candy W. Daniels CPS and Ollie Jo Bozeman CPS for their contribution to the T-L Division.

The Board revamped the Division Procedures Manual and distributed revised copy to all chapters at the annual meeting.
The “leadership conferences” were restructured and renamed to “Future Positioning Workshops.” Along with leadership training for new officers and committee chairmen, these workshops now include team training and are eligible for CEUs.

“PSI, Bridge to the Future” was the president’s theme. Membership in the Division as of April 30, 1997 was 1,898 — up from 1,888 on May 30, 1996. By May 30, 1997 the membership stood at 1,960. This represented a 3.8% growth in membership, the first growth in several years.

The Southwest District conference was held in Kaanapali, Maui, Hawaii and was hosted by the No Ka Oi Chapter. President Rios represented the division. The division was well represented at the district conference.

Susan Skarness CPS (Houston Chapter) was named 1997 division Secretary of the Year and was named ISOTY at the 1997 Buffalo Convention. The 1997 Division Member of the Year was Mary Joy Guzman CPS, Capital Chapter in Austin, Texas.
Winners of the “PSI Bridge to the Future” membership awards (greatest percentage net increase for a chapter) were:

5 - 15 members Greenville Chapter (33% increase)

16 - 35 members Amarillo Chapter (68% increase)

36 - 55 members NOLA Chapter (9% increase)

Azalea, North Dallas, and Twice-as-Nice Chapters were presented with a new PSI banner for sponsoring Magnolia, Lone Star, and Lake Country Chapters, respectively.
In addition to a $200 donation (each) to the Retirement Centers Trust; PSI Building Fund; and PSI Research and Education Fund; a paver was purchased in honor of Lynn Brown CPS, 1996 Division President. The Division also funded the $1,000 scholarship to last year’s winner, Lori High of Longview, Texas.
The 47th Annual Meeting site for 1999 was awarded to Houston, Texas, hosted by Southwest Houston Chapter.

President Yarbrough’s theme for the 1997-98 year was “Fine Tune Your Career - Our Success by Design.” Membership on June 1, 1997 was 1,960 and on May 31, 1998 was 2,020 with a 2.55% net increase in membership.
Jambalaya Chapter in Gonzales, Louisiana was chartered in April 1998 and EXCEL Dallas Chapter in Dallas, Texas chartered in May 1998.
During the year, we lost two chapters - Denton Chapter and Northwest.

The 1997 International convention was held in July, 1997 in Buffalo, New York. President Yarbrough attended as Delegate and President-Elect Goodner attended as Alternate. The Division Secretary of the Year, Susan Skarness CPS, Houston Chapter, was selected International Secretary of the Year and represented our Association throughout the year.
The Southwest District Conference was held in Newport Beach, California in October 1997. Due to a family emergency, President Yarbrough was not able to attend. Barbara Wyatt CPS represented the Division during the Omega Ceremony.
There were 153 Texas and Louisiana secretaries who earned the CPS designation during the 1997-98 year.
On behalf of the Texas-Louisiana Division, a $200 contribution was made to the Research and Education Foundation in memory of all Omega members; a $200 contribution was made to the Retirement Centers Trust; a $200 contribution was made to the PSI Building Fund; and a patio paver was purchased at the Retirement Center in honor of Maggie Rios CPS, immediate past president of the Texas-Louisiana Division. The Division awarded a $750 scholarship to JoAnna Oldham of Sandia, Texas.
The 46th Annual Meeting was held on May 15-17, 1998 at the Adams Mark Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The theme was “Mission impossible.” Total registration was 244 members representing 38 chapters and members at large.
Certificates were awarded to five chapters who gained the greatest percentage net increase in membership from June 1, 1997 through April 30, 1998, in the following categories:

05-15 members - magnolia Chapter, Lake Charles, Louisiana, 75 gain

16-35 members - Lake Country Chapter, Pittsburg, Texas, 136% gain

35-55 members - Lone Star Chapter, McKinney, Texas, 30% gain

The Division presented an award to the individual recruiting the most members from June 1, 1997 through April 30, 1998. This award went to Tammy Murphy of Jambalaya Chapter, Gonzales, Louisiana. Tammy personally recruited 9 new members and 4 co-recruits. Tammy was awarded her choice of her annual dues paid for one year or reimbursement of her registration to Annual Meeting.
Baton Rouge Chapter, Baton Rouge, Louisiana received the New Chapter Formation Award for sponsoring Jambalaya Chapter. The chapter was awarded a check for $50. The EXCEL Dallas Chapter was sponsored by the Texas-Louisiana Division.
Recognition was given by each Division Officer of a Chapter President which they felt had gone the extra mile.
The 1998 Division Member of the Year was presented to Jeanette Geiman CPS, West Houston Chapter.
Pat Clark CPS, Houston Chapter was selected as the 1998 Division Secretary of the Year.
The first Division Media Team was formed. This team worked directly with the news media and with the Chapter Media Team Representatives. A television interview in Wichita Falls, Texas with Channel 3 TV News was held in March 1998 to build interest in a new chapter in that area.
The Board Contact Program was well utilized. Division Officers and the Division ISOTY made 42 chapter visits during the year.

President’s Goodner’s theme for the 1998-99 year was “Pride - Professionalism - IAAP.” Membership on June 1, 1998 was 2,010 and 2,061 on May 31, 1999, representing a 2.54% net increase in membership and placing the division in second place standing in Southwest District.
Four chapters were chartered during the 1998-99 year. Red Stick Chapter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana chartered in September. The Falls Chapter in Wichita falls, Texas chartered in October. Baytown Area Chapter chartered in April followed by Bellaire Chapter in May, both in the Houston area. These four chapters represented a 9.52% net increase in chapters placing the Division in second place in Southwest District and third place in the Association.

The 1998 International Convention was held in August, 1998 in Atlanta, Georgia with President Goodner attending as Delegate and President-Elect Caffee attending as Alternate. Members approved a name change to International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).
The Southwest District Conference was held in Houston, Texas, hosted by West Houston Chapter. President Goodner attended as Delegate and President-Elect Caffee attended as Alternate. Secretary Potts also attended.
There were 137 Texas and Louisiana secretaries who earned the CPS designation during the 1998-99 year with the total to date 55,523. The Division also had 42 members who recertified during the year.
On behalf of the Texas-Louisiana Division, a 4200 contribution was made to the Research and Education Foundation to help defray the cost of a CSI student attending International Convention in Portland. The Division donated $200 both to the Retirement Centers Trust and to the IAAP Building Fund. A $50 patio paver was purchased at the Retirement Center in honor of Dotty Yarbrough CPS, immediate past president of the Division.
The Division awarded $375 scholarships to Mark Berne of Kingwood, Texas, and Eloisa Tobias of San Antonio, Texas.
The T-L Division Procedures Manual was completely revised by an Ad Hoc Committee chaired by Genny Dupre Cps, member at large. Chapters were notified that copies of the newly revised manual would be available at the Annual Meeting.
The 47th Annual Meeting was held May 14-16, 1999, at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Houston, Texas, with a theme of “Expect the Unexpected.” Total registration was 244 members representing 37 chapters and 11 members at large.
Certificates were awarded to five chapters who gained the greatest percentage net increase in membership from June 1, 1998 through April 30, 1999, in the following categories:

05-15 members - Trendsetters Chapter, Houston, Texas, 111.1% net gain

16-35 members - Jambalaya Chapter, Gonzales, Louisiana, 103.8% net gain

35-55 members - LaPine Chapter, Alexandria, Louisiana, 19.5% net gain

The Division presented an award to the individual recruiting the most members from June 1, 1998, through April 30, 1999. This award went to Caroline Champness CSP of West Houston Chapter, Houston, Texas. Caroline personally recruited 14 new members and was awarded her choice of having her annual dues paid for one year or having her registration to the 2000 Annual Meeting paid.
Chapters receiving $50 from the Division for sponsoring new chapters included Baton Rouge Chapter for sponsoring Red Stick Chapter, Trinity Chapter for sponsoring The Falls Chapter, and Clear Lake/NASA Chapter for sponsoring Baytown Area Chapter. Each new chapter received an IAAP banner from the Division.
Juanita Woodfox CPS, Clear Lake/NASA Chapter, was recognized as the 1999 Division Member of the Year during the Division Member of the Year luncheon.
Division Officers presented programs during the 26 chapter visits made throughout the year and with help from several T L Division members presented a leadership workshop to close the Annual Meeting.

President Caffee's theme for the 1999-2000 year was "Your Time is NOW!” Membership on June 1, 1999 was 2,061 and 1,866 on May 31, 2000, representing a 9% net decrease in membership.
T-L Division saw three chapters disband: Dallas Central (Dallas), Lagniappe (Shreveport), and, eventually, EXCEL Chapter (Dallas).
Three chapters were chartered during the 1999-2000 year. Lubbock Chapter in Lubbock Texas chartered in early April 2000. Rio Grande Valley Chapter of Edinburg, Texas and Comanche Peak Chapter of Glen Rose, Texas both charted in May 2000.

The CPS conference was held in June 1999 in Orlando and President Caffee attended as a representative of T-L Division. The 1999 International Convention was held in July in Portland, Oregon with President Caffee attending as delegate and President-Elect Potts attending as alternate. Secretary Wyatt and Treasurer McMillen attended as well. In October, the Southwest District Conference was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. President Caffee attended as your delegate. Treasurer McMillen also attended the conference. President elect Potts attended the Incoming Presidents Conference in Kansas City in February 2000.
Division officers made 21 chapter visits, held three (3) leadership training sessions at the request of chapters, and wrote hundreds of emails to keep up to date. Throughout the entire T-L Division for the year 1999-2000, chapters provided 119.5 CEUs for its members. Training once again became a priority.
Use of the Internet exceeded all expectations as T-L Division acquired its own domain name: www.iaap-txla.org. A forms page was created so that you may print a copy of the scholarship application, the DMOTY application, and membership application. The T-L bylaws and standing rules were added to the website. In keeping with last year’s request to provide a better way for the TEXANA to be distributed, it is now published on the Internet. All of these changes were made in an effort to open up information to all members. President Caffee served as webmaster.
There were 107 Texas and Louisiana secretaries who earned the CPS designation during the 1999-2000 year with the total to date 57,201.
A Retirement Centers Trust paver was purchased in honor of 1998-99 Division President, Cora Goodner CPS. Donations of $200 each were made to the Research & Education Foundation, the Building Fund, and Retirement Centers Trust Fund. T-L Division also established the Candy Daniels Fund to present an honorarium to the Research & Education Foundation in Candy’s name when she completes her year as International president.
The Division awarded six (6) scholarships in the amount of $500 each to: Patricia Balanquit (Fort Worth), Sonia Hurtado (McAllen), Carolyn Morris (Dallas), Lindsey Northcott (Ira, TX), Brenda Roehe (Houston), and Tabitha Stanley (Hammond, LA).
The 48h Annual Meeting was held May 19-21, 2000, at the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Irving, Texas, with a theme “A Race for Excellence.” Total registration was 211 members representing 34 chapters and 4 members-at-large.
Certificates were awarded to five chapters who gained the greatest percentage net increase in membership from June 1, 1999 through April 30, 2000, in the following categories:

The Division presented an award to the individual recruiting the most members from June 1, 1999, through April 30, 2000. This award went to Paula Berkley of the new Rio Grande Valley Chapter of Edinburg, Texas. Paula sponsored 39 new members and was awarded her choice of having her annual dues paid for one year or having her registration to the 2001 Annual Meeting paid.
Las Colinas Chapter received $50 from the Division for sponsoring Comanche Peak. And, the Division Board elected to give each new chapter $100 seed money to help defray chartering costs.
Anne McHenry CPS of Medical Center Chapter, was recognized as the 2000 Division Member of the Year during the Division Member of the Year luncheon.
