Tromsø Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden

DON’T MISS:

  1. The rare Chinese gentians Gentiana arethusae and G. hexaphylla (more urn-shaped)! They grow in the south slope of the Gentian Hill, and originate from dry mountains of China.

  1. A colourful Arctic plant now in blossom is Chamaerion latifolium from Greenland. The flowers look much like those of the fireweed, but the plant is much lower, adapted to Arctic conditions.

  1. Tall perennials near the Pond and in the Tradition and Herb collections. Notice three specimens of a 2 m tall species of Leopard Plant south of the Pond, Ligularia macrophylla. Its leaves resemble those of the banana plant!

  1. In the Himalayan section there are still Blue Poppies flowering, most noticeable is the Meconopsis horridula, now seen along with many other flowering perennials.

  1. Edelweiss (Leontopodium alpinum) in the southern part of the Alps Collection. Here you can introduce it to your love without following the Alps tradition of picking it and risking your life on the wildest mountain peak! Actually it self seeds with us, and in our Himalaya you can see 7 other, but similar species in flower now.

  1. White bluebells from Caucasus; Campanula altraniana and C. betulifolia.
