Vessel cleaning boy from Sullia shines in IIT exam

Bangalore, Jun 24 (PTI): He helped his mother, a daily wage earner and washed vessels in a hotel in his spare time while he was studying, but financial hardship did not stop Manjunath from clearing the tough Joint Admission Test for MSc (JAM).

Manjunath of Sullia taluk near Mangalore will now pursue his six-year joint MSc-PhD at IIT Bhubaneswar after clearing JAM. "I am leaving to Bhubaneswar on July 13 from Mangalore and join the premier institution on July 22," he told a news agency here.

His mother could not meet the expenses of his education as she had to educate her daughters Nethravati and

Rajeshwari, who completed PUC and BSc Nursing respectively.

"Life became a hardship for us after my father left my mother and married another woman. She started to work as a coolie to support us. Most part of her earnings were spent for educating my sisters and hence decided to earn for myself and the family. I used to wash vessels in a hotel when I was studying at Yenekallu Government School," Manjunath said.

Manjunath said he had a burning ambition to be an IAS officer and preparation for it came in handy to pass JAM.

"After passing JAM I have an inclination towards it for now. I do not know I may take IAS exam in future. However, stories of political interference and corruption surrounding IAS officers puts me off. I would rather prefer a job where I can perform my duties freely, without any interference," he said.

To meet his requirements to pursue higher studies, he worked for caterers on weekends and holidays earning around Rs 300 per assignment.

Manjunath is getting financial help from philanthropists to pursue his dream at IIT Bhubaneswar. He said he needed Rs 43,000 to complete his admission at IIT Bhubneswar.

Catholic journalist gets international award

The award has been instituted in memory of a Dutch journalist and Carmelite priest who died in 1942 in Germany.

New Delhi:  Geneva-based International Christian Organization of the Media (ICOM) has chosen an Indian Catholic journalist for the Titus Brandma award for journalism.

The award would be conferred on Anto Akkara, who is working with international media as South Asia correspondent, at the World Media and Journalism Congress to be held at Panama city in October.

“The jury took the decision considering your contribution in defending human rights and speaking up for the oppressed in your journalistic work in South Asia,” the ICOM said in its communication to Akkara.

“By deciding to confer this prestigious honor, the jury acknowledges the stellar role you have played in highlighting the gross denial of fundamental rights and freedom of religion in the Kandhamal jungles of Orissa,” it added.

The triennial award has been instituted in memory

of Blessed Titus Brandsma, a Dutch journalist and Carmelite priest who died in 1942 at the Dachau concentration camp in Germany.

After masters in English literature from St. Thomas College Thrissur, Akkara did law from Delhi University and has been working for over two decades with international media as foreign correspondent.

The journalist author, who has won several media awards, has penned a book on Kandhamal riots titled 'Kandhamal - a blot on Indian Secularism.'

Akkara’s latest book on Kandhamal ‘Early Christians of 21st Century’ was released in February 2013 at Velankanni.

Jobs vacant: Saudi Arabia needs more executioners

Despite shortage, beheadings are on the rise.

Saudi Arabia:

Justice Ministers plans to add shooting to beheading as a method of execution; not out of compassion, but because the lack of executioners is causing a backlog. Since January 2013, at least 40 people have been executed, the last one on 14 May. Last year, 76 people were executed.

Saudi Arabia is governed by Sharia and people sentenced to death are executed with a sword in accordance with Islamic law. However, fewer people are interested in a "career" in executing others, a task that requires a lot of cold blood and a lot of training in how to swing properly the sword. In fact, a memo from the Saudi Justice Ministry is bemoaning a labour shortage in people trained to use the blade.

Within the kingdom, courts are forced to compete for executioners, who must travel around the country to carry out sentences. This is slowing down the justice system. To speed matters up, the Justice Ministry has issued an order allowing courts to shoot prisoners on

the grounds that this method is not unIslamic.

In reality, the lack of trained executioners has not slowed down executions in Saudi Arabia. Since the beginning 2013, at least 40 people have been put to death. The last case occurred on 14 May in Najran, in the country's south-west. The executed felon, Maneh al-Daen, had been convicted of stabbing to death a fellow tribesman. Last year, the kingdom executed 76 people.

For years, the main human rights groups and many Western governments have tried to get the Saudi kingdom to implement fairer trials and less cruel executions. However, Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where the death sentence by beheading can be carried out in a public place.

The death penalty is applied in cases of murder, armed robbery, rape and drug trafficking, as well as witchcraft and sodomy.

No less cruel are sentences for minor offences s such as theft and crimes of opinion, which in addition to jail time, may include public flogging or the chopping off of hands or feet.

Recently, a case involving two men, a Lebanese and a Saudi, sentenced to six years in prison and 300 lashes for pushing a young woman to convert to Christianity, generated a lot of discussion in the country. They were convicted despite the fact that the young woman, who is a refugee in Sweden, defended the two, saying in a video that she had converted without compulsion.

INDIA : Appeal for contribution towards Uttarakhand Relief Works By Abp. Oswald Cardinal Gracias (CNUA)

Your Eminence/Grace/Excellency, Rev. Father/Sister/Brother, On behalf of the Church in India, I wish to make an earnest appeal to you to support the victims of the recent flood in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand saw over 60 hours of continuous and heavy rains from June 14th to 17th, 2013. The cloudburst and ensuing landslides has been described as a "Himalayan Tsunami". Pictures on the television have been frightening with many houses washed away and buildings in the path of the flood waters collapsing like brittle clay-work. Our Defence Forces have played a magnificent role in battling hostile weather to rescue people and bring them to safety. Over 100,000 stranded people have been brought to safety in the mammoth on-going multi-agency operation and several hundreds still remain to be evacuated. The human toll has been immense, with the count of the dead increasing every hour.

Since the beginning of this disaster, local diocesan rescue teams and Caritas India have been present, helping with the rescue efforts. Besides the Government, numerous NGOs have been reaching out to people in distress. Caritas India has been interacting and networking with other NGOs in the relief effort. Based on the need-assessment, food, drinking water, clothes, medicines and face-masks have been distributed. There is need for huge support for the relief and rehabilitation work of the affected people.

The call of the Gospel does not allow us to be indifferent to the immense suffering the people in the affected areas are undergoing. With this letter, I am making an appeal to all our people and Institutions to join in the relief effort by contributing generously. We need

to extend total solidarity and support to enable the people of Uttarakhand to return back to normalcy. Caritas India will coordinate all our efforts.

I am requesting that all Bishops, Major Superiors and Heads of Institutions make an appeal to our people to contribute generously. Contributions may be sent to Caritas India, CBCI Centre, 1 Ashok Place, Near Gole Dakhana, New Delhi 110001, either directly, or through the local Diocese. With kind regards and best wishes, Yours fraternally in Christ, + Oswald Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay & President - CBCI - http://www.cbci.in

 GEM PLUS - LAUGH TIME

Two men, one American and an Indian were sitting in a bar and discussing about their family problems. The Indian man said to the American, 'We have problem in India we can't  marry the  one whom we love, You know my parents are forcing me to get  married to this so called homely girl from a village whom I haven't even  met once.' We call this arranged marriage. I don't want to marry a woman  whom I don't love... I told them that openly and now have a hell lot of  family problems.'

The American said, talking about love marriages... In America We can  marry the one whom we love ......I'll tell you my story.  'I married a widow  whom I deeply loved and dated for 3 years.  After a couple of years, my  father fell in love with my step-daughter and married her, so my father  became my son-in-law and I became my father's father-in-law.

Legally now my daughter is my mother and my wife my grandmother.  More problems occurred when I had a son.  My son is my father's brother and so  he is my uncle.

Situations turned worse when my father had a son. Now my father's son, my  brother is my grandson. Ultimately, I have become my own grandfather and  I am my own grandson.  And you say you have family problems.'

 The Indian fainted........!!!
