Abstract

Mentha genus (Lamiaceae) has been found to possess significant biological activities, including antimicrobial, antistomachache, anti-vomitive, antiseptic, anti-infective, vermifuge, antitussive, to treat digestive tract disorders and as diuretic [1, 2]. 15 species are distributed in Algeria [3]. In continuation of our works on Lamiaceae essential oils [4, 5], we report here the GC and GC/MS analyses and the antioxidant activity of the species Mentha spicata.

The hydrodistillation in a Clenvenger-type apparatus of the aerial parts of Mentha spicata yielded 2.1% of a pale yellowish oil. The chemical composition of the hydrodistilled essential oil of Mentha spicata, collected from Ghardia (Saharienne Algerian), was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. 30 components representing 97.2% of the essential oil were detected with Benzene, 1-[(2-bromophenoxy)methyl]-3,4-dimethoxy (44.06%), Eucalyptol (15.32%), cis-Dihydrocarvone (8.85%) and dl-Limonene (5.80%) as the major components.
