Diffusing essential oils into our environment can be healthy and pleasurable. Natural, pure, essential oils are distilled, pressed or otherwise extracted from trees, herbs, flowers, fruits, or other botanicals. Many essential oils are antibacterial, antiviral, and/or antifungal. Because essential oils defend the plants from disease, societies have used essential oils for centuries to prevent sickness or restore health. Essential oils have also been used to lift moods, calm, energize, clear minds, support meditation and induce sleep. To accomplish any of the aforementioned tasks, it is necessary to use good quality, pure essential oils from a reputable supplier. Never use artificial fragrances.
Set up instructions
Remove your diffuser from the shipping box and bag. Place the unit on a level surface that is resistant to damage from essential oils. Tile and stone are good choices. If you place your unit on a wood or plastic surface, use care when filling the diffuser bottle with essential oils. Clean up any spills immediately or fill the bottle elsewhere and wipe is down before placing it in the diffuser. Plug your unit into an electrical outlet. Diffusers are 120V 60Hz unless otherwise stated.
Open your nebulizer package. Remove the nebulizer cap and check the black filter for proper placement. The black filter should be fairly level and recessed about ½ inch, just slightly below the slot in the side. If the filter has been disturbed during shipment, reposition the filter as shown. Tweezers work best for this. Replace the cap and turn it so the slot is about half open. Unscrew the nebulizer from the empty amber bottle. If your diffuser came with a one-ounce bottle of essential oil, it should be in an identical amber bottle. Open the bottle and screw the nebulizer onto it. Keep the bottle and the nebulizer upright! If you wish to blend oils or use oil that is in another type of bottle, pour at least ⅓ of an ounce into the empty amber bottle and attach the nebulizer. Use only pure essential oils; do not use oils that have been diluted with a carrier oil such as jojoba, almond or grapeseed oil. Carrier oils will clog your nebulizer. Place the bottle into the diffuser holder, attach the nebulizer to the airline and turn the unit on (5/25, 11/25 and manual units—toggle the power switch to the right; Beyond unit—toggle the power switch to the right for timed output and toggle the power switch left for continuous output). A very fine mist should be coming out of the nebulizer. Sit back, relax and enjoy.

For your own protection, do not forget to return the warranty card. This information is used solely for our records and is never given or sold to others.

General Use

To regulate the amount of essential oil dispersed into the air, simply twist the cap of the nebulizer to increase or decrease the opening through which the mist escapes. Never operate the unit with the slot completely or nearly closed. This may cause leakage of oil from the nebulizer in other than mist form.
To avoid becoming overwhelmed by a scent, the Essential Air diffusers, 5/25, 11/25, and Beyond, have been designed with a timer. The timer allows dispersion of oils for five or eleven minutes and then rests for 25 minutes. This allows time for the oils to disperse throughout the area and fade before more oil is released.
It is advisable to change essential oil scents every few days to maintain a keen perception of the aroma. Constant use of the same oil can dull scent acuity. This is called olfactory fatigue and causes people to wonder why the intensity of a scent has diminished after constant use.

Maintenance

To get the best out of your Essential Air unit, you need to put a little back in. To attain years of enjoyment from your diffuser, your Cleaning Kit is your best ally.

Your cleaning kit consists of a one-ounce amber bottle filled with household isopropyl alcohol and a nebulizer probe. When changing oils or when storing your unit for two or more days attach the alcohol bottle to the nebulizer and run the unit for one cycle or five minutes. This will clean the nebulizer. New oils will not be contaminated with the previous scent and oils will not be left to thicken or crystallize and clog the nebulizer. It is not necessary to change the alcohol after every cleaning. If you see globules of oil floating at the top or on the bottom of the alcohol bottle, this means that your essential oil has probably been diluted with a carrier oil. Stop diffusing that oil! It will clog your nebulizer and eventually damage the compressor. Change the alcohol if it becomes cloudy or the bottle is less than half full. Note: If diffusing somewhat viscous oils such as Patchouli, clean the nebulizer after each use.

Never diffuse essential oils mixed with water or vegetable oils (carrier oils) or essential oils that are very viscous and heavier than water such as Vetiver. Vetiver can be diffused if blended with other essential oils of a lighter consistency, for example sandalwood, lavender, or clary sage. Be sure to mix thoroughly.

Trouble Shooting

Unit is running, but there is no mist, oils are not diffusing— If there is no mist, you may have a blockage in the nebulizer brass inlet. When the diffuser is running, bubbles may be seen coming out of the wick near the bottom of the essential oil bottle. If there are no bubbles, check to make sure there is air coming out of the airline from the base. If there is no air coming from the airline, see the Refurbishing section. If there is airflow from the base unit, turn off the diffuser and remove the nebulizer cap and check the position of the black filter. If the filter is deep down in the nebulizer it may be blocking the inlet. Correctly reposition the filter below the output slot and try again. If the oils still do not diffuse, disconnect the airline from the nebulizer and remove the nebulizer from the bottle of essential oil, remove cap and filter and place nebulizer in a heat proof cup (top down, wick pointing up), pour hot, soapy water over the nebulizer and soak until cool. Rinse well with warm water. Hold the nebulizer up to a light. You should see light through a small hole in the center of the nebulizer. If not, use the nebulizer probe provided to open the inlet. You should see the probe inside the wick if the probe is properly placed. Replace the black filter and the cap (you may clean the filter and cap with hot soapy water as well), attach nebulizer to the cleaning alcohol bottle, place in the machine and reconnect the airline. Turn the machine on. You should see an alcohol mist (it is sometimes difficult to see the mist, backlighting helps, also you can hear a soft hissing). Let the unit run for a few cycles. Then replace the alcohol bottle with oils. If you cannot get the probe through the inlet, you can try soaking the nebulizer again, but you will need to replace the nebulizer if the clog is not removable.

Wick came out—If the wick falls out of the nebulizer you can try pressing it back onto the brass inlet, but a tight seal is needed to diffuse. Over time the plastic looses its elasticity and needs to be replaced. A reasonably priced repair kit will provide a new wick. Note: removing and replacing the wick may move or dislodge the brass inlet rendering the nebulizer inoperable.

Wick and brass inlet came out—In this case, there is very little you can do to fix the nebulizer. You can try to reinsert the inlet by pressing it in firmly, but the operational tolerances are quite subtle and luck may be elusive.
No air coming from airline or machine will not turn on—Call Leyden House for a return authorization number and return the unit for repair.
Refurbishing/Repair

Over time the unit’s compressor will weaken, three to five years minimum (most last 10 years with care), depending on the amount of use and the care given. With a refurbishing or repair, we replace the compressor and tubing. Although it is rare, if the timer is malfunctioning we will replace that as well. If an old nebulizer has been returned with the unit, we will clean and repair it if possible. The unit is cleaned and boxed with a new cleaning kit, a new nebulizer and the old nebulizer if applicable as well as a new warranty card. Turnaround time is two to four weeks. Please call for a return authorization number and current refurbishing costs.
